Gerald Henderson?
Am I the only one who doesn't have much if any faith in Gerald Henderson as the Bobcats future at the SG position? He's only 23 years old and already having a hip surgery operation to repair tendinitis in his knees. He hasn't yet averaged over 10 points per game. He shot shy of 20% from the 3-point line. I mean I think he's a solid rotational player that can give this team an occasional spark, but he has a couple of question marks. I understand that a lot of fans in Bobcat land may be Duke layovers, but I'm not sold. Can you guys sell me on him?

he averaged, what? 16ppg when Silas made him a starter? played lockdown-D and hit midrange jumpshots blindfolded. He's the perfect fit to a scoring SF. hopefully we will get one in next year's draft.

Your avatar pic doesn't help your argument. Paul Silas coached over half of the season (54 games), and Gerald Henderson's stat sheet read 9.6 points per game. I understand that Henderson showed some emergence towards the end of the season, but numbers don't lie. Can you explain his 19% 3-point shooting while you're at it?

And your lack of knowledge when it comes to this team and it's players isn't helping yours.

I'm only going by the numbers. I'm hoping that someone could convince me that he's a worthwhile starter with a legitimate argument. I already knew coming into this board that he was a favorite amongst Bobcat fans.

Chill out with the insults. I'm just asking a question. If you have a good argument for Gerald Henderson as the Bobcats future at SG, I would like to read it. That's all.

The insults are not necessary. Everyone has a right to to their opinion. Even when they are wrong. This person asked a question. He did not come on this board disrespecting our team as some have in the past. Evidently this person makes the same mistake a lot of new fans make. He is judging Hendo by his star potential instead of his nba potential. Everybody is not going to be Kobe Bryant. Gerald is a nice young two guard who will help the team. His shooting percentages will improve. Hopefully we will obtain a star potential three who Gerald can draw the double teams from with his solid midrange game. Will Gerald ever average 25 per game? Not likely. Will he be a nice complementary peice long term. Probably. If he doesn't who cares? Two guard is one of the easiest positions to fill, and we will gain a ton of cap space the next two years.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
some of the concerns are valid. hendo is having a serious surgery. we can all hope that its just a one time thing and he will recover 100% with no lingering negative effects, but that is just us wishing the best.
in terms of last year's performance, hendo was great after he became a starter. of course we all still have concerns about his 3pt shooting, but at the very least he is a great defender who can be a decent starter or great role players assuming he is healthy. that is worst case.
there is still enough reasons for many to believe his ceiling is still yet to be reached.
as for the insults.... not on this board. thanks.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
The only knock with him is his 3 point shooting. Other than that, you have a solid mid range shooter, someone who can run and finish, and a good perimeter defender. If the right pieces are put in place for this team, he can succeed at the shooting guard spot.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
His best asset is and probably always will be his defensive ability. He's actually outstanding at on the ball defense in man to man situations. He locked Kobe down, not something you'd expect from a rookie or 2nd year guy getting no playing time.
The scoring came on once he got more minutes after Wallace left, and he's a much better shooter than Wallace was at this point in his career. If he can just be a 10ppg guy and maintain the defensive abilities, he will always have a place on this team because he can lock down the other teams best wing.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
Not to let facts get in the way or anything...
Since Brown was fired, Gerald has averaged:
29 mpg
12.4 ppg
3.7 rpg
-----
Not world-beater numbers obviously. But considering that the average NBA lottery pick has a career average of about 12.3ppg, Gerald is performing right at average right now (in fact above average when you consider G was drafted late lotto). Certainly not anywhere CLOSE to a bust, that's for sure. And he's only going to get better, presumably.
If the one and a half months of Gerald's career in CHA is any indication (when he entered the starting lineup), these numbers will be much higher.
Oh and interestingly, when Gerald was given over 40 minutes for a game, he dropped 32 points against a playoff team.

It was a congenital defect. That means it was something he's had forever that would cause undue stress on the knees.

I think I have the explanation: He isn't a good 3pt shooter, and he doesn't take that many anyway.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
Thanks for the insight. In between the brief moments that I have been able to see Gerald Henderson in the NBA and going over his stats, I didn't get to account for his defensive capabilities. As far as his offense, I've always thought of him as an opportunist instead of an creator coming out of Duke, which is a great trait for a role playing SG. Hopefully the knee problems are something minor as long as he continue to treat it carefully. I look forward to seeing him on a nightly basis next season. This Bobcats organization is building a solid young foundation by putting defense first (minus Corey Maggette). I just hope that Maggette doesn't go from a 'black hole' to the Grand Canyon being that his scoring prowess will be depended on more than ever in his career.

He is a great catch and shoot guy, I think. His passing needs to improve but he certainly isn't a turnover machine, it would just be nice to have a facilitator there. Jax is one of the best passing SG's in the league despite his TOs, and we got used to that.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
Hendo is definitely replaceable. But hes good enough for us right now that we can afford to add help in other places.
After we get a SF of the future (next draft) and pick up another big man for the future (unless Tyrus develops), we'll look to upgrade our current positions. It's third on our priority list behind the two I just mentioned, but the FO is certainly has their eye on Hendo

Re: Gerald Henderson?
I just wanna add my two cents and you guys can get back to the debate. As someone that is not an overly basketball educated dude, but someone that did see every game last year, I must say ai think Henderson is gonna be very good. I think most of us are hoping he is gonna be the guy he became the last month of the season when he averaged 16.5 pts 4.5 reb 3.5 ast. And was clutch as hell. In addition to be fair, his stats as a starter in 30 games last season were 13.4 3.6 2.2-- not great, but they improve every month. I think there is a lot to be hopeful about when it comes to hendo. He might not be an all-star, but I would bet he becomes a very good player for us.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
The thing that makes us all love him on this forum, aside from his excellent defense, is his attitude, he has shown multiple times this season that he isn't afraid of taking big shots down the stretch, and he really looks like he has a great personality and is a hard worker. This is definitely part of why we have such high expectations for him.

Re: Gerald Henderson?
I'm not ready to anoint him as the starter at SG for the next 10 years, but you can't deny the improvements he's shown on offense and his ability to defend and run the floor. I'm in the wait and see mode right now with him. As we are in rebuilding mode this is the PERFECT time to take that kind of approach with a guy like Hendo. Just give him minutes and see what he can do. Also, before he was playing a secondary role and he knew it. Give him a bit more responsibility and see what he can get done when he doesn't have to play 2nd or 3rd fiddle in the scheme of what we are doing.
If he ends up being able to get us 15-16 ppg with a good FG% and we can get a scoring SF with him, and a big man that can score/pass, and assuming Kemba can efficiently score in the NBA I think we'll have a nice squad.
