So why did the New York Knicks pay the New Orleans Hornets $750,000 to draft Josh Harrellson with the 45th pick in last night’s NBA Draft.

Zagsblog has some quotes from Knicks’ coach Mike D’Antoni on Jorts:

“[He's] a need that we need,” D’Antoni said. “He’s a big body, obviously. He came in and had a very nice workout. He showed that he’ll bang people around. He’s tough, he’s big. He had a nice touch shooting-size. He can put the ball on the floor a little bit.

“We’ll see if he can adapt to the NBA game, but we think he has a chance, a good chance, and we’re looking forward to seeing him.”

The Knicks official roster lists the 6-foot-10 Harrellson as a forward. He is one of four on the squad listed at 6-10 or better. The others are Jared Jeffries (6-11), Amare Stoudamire (6-10) and Ronny Turiaf (6-10). The thin Jeffries is not exactly a banger. And Stoudamire likes to play out on the wing, as well.

HoopsData.com lists the Knicks as ranking 24th in the league last year in Offensive Rebound Rate. The Knicks were 27th out of 30 in Offensive Rebound Rate differential. So clearly New York needs some help on the boards. Thus the draft of Jorts.

That’s ironic, given the episode that spurred Harrellson’s improvement. After an exhibition game in which the center grabbed 26 rebounds, only to be ignored by his head coach, Harrellson tweeted: “Either we are the worst offensive rebounding team or he had gotten better”!!! Just amazing to me I can’t get a good job or way to go”

That landed him on the treadmill, per John Calipari’s orders. The extra work paid off. Harrellson ended up in better shape and more focused. His game improved as his work ethic improvement. After an especially effective run in the NCAA Tournament, Harrellson caught the Big Apple’s eye. The rest is history. Jorts history.

Harrellson has alot going against him to become an NBA player, but you cant question his heart, motor, and toughness. Those are traits that are hard to come by in big men these days. At best Im hoping he can be a goon type to give us 10 mpg at some point, but Im not expecting it. Just happy to have the big guy on board.

People pay too much stock into Standing Reach man. That's how gems fall and become steals.

Quite a few current and past successful NBA Players did NOT have high standing reaches. Also, I believe Harrellson's standing reach is only an inch or 2 shorter than Amare's.

Amare has a 9'0.5'' standing reach. Harrellson's is pretty bad Mags. Small for even PFs. Not sayin he cant play in this league, but it wont be easy. He has girth though :D.

See the parts I bolded. ;)

With the jokes this guy cracks, he needs to join the Andy and Landry show, making it the Andy, Landry, and Jorts Variety Hour.

Kevin Love's standing reach is 8'10. That's only 1 and a half inches more than Jorts' reach. And Love is one of the league's best rebounders.

If Jorts just hustles and uses his body to box people out, I think we'd be fine with rebounding when he's on the floor.

You can't expect much from a second round guy but he has those qualities the Knicks have been lacking so I can only hope he is good enough to crack the rotation. If the Knicks loved his workout it must mean he also hit some jumpshots, too.

Time will tell.

I don't see whats wrong with taking Kentucky's starting C (on a Final 4 team) with a second round pick as opposed to the Magic using a first rounder on Daniel Orton, who did NOTHING in college, and similarly nothing in the NBA. If people weren't so hung up on "raw potential" and evaluated what he can bring to this squad RIGHT now, they would see he is a great value pick.

I think if he comes into training camp 10 lbs lighter and at around 10% body fat he'll be in good enough shape to be a backup C at the very least. I don't know why but I have a feeling he'll eventually start for us. I don't see them getting anyone they like in free agency.

I had a really good feeling about Josh and we knew New York loved him. They had told us his workout blew them away. I knew Boston and some other teams that really wanted him and were going to try and move up. In fact, there was another team willing to buy a pick to move up for Josh.

Think about what I’m saying – what a transformation! Josh changed his body, his attitude, his approach and his skillset. He changed his belief in himself all through hard work and knowing that when the tide rises, everyone is able to reach their dreams.

If you think you don’t have to work to get drafted then you are fooling yourself. It’s the most competitive thing I’ve ever seen – no one is just handed a draft position. They must earn it.

If Boston wanted him, he must be good. Those **** always find someone who hustles and does the little things perfectly.

Mmmm reading this makes me feel a little better about this pick

Josh is in this workout with Jimmer. Hes the first one they show nailing jumpers.

He actually moves very well. More athletic than people think. 30 inch no step vertical too. Finishes well. This guy really could be our Brian Cardinal 8-).
