I'm not positive on this, but I'm pretty sure the Memphis qualifying offer simply allows them to match an offer later made by some other team. Were that the case, the amount of the qualifying offer wouldn't really matter.

The Grizzlies have extended a qualifying offer worth $4,466,666 for next season to Gasol, making him a restricted free agent.

Gasol now (when free agency starts) has the option to accept that offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

He also may sign an offer sheet with any team or simply negotiate a new contract with the Grizzlies.

Given Gasol's market value, it'll come down to him signing an offer sheet or signing a new contract with the Grizzlies outright.
