The Draft is Done, Now What's the Plan?

For the sake of argument, lets assume there is going to be an NBA season next year (personally I put those odds at about 10-1 against). If you could be the devil (or angel) on KOC's shoulder, what are you whispering in his ear?

Here's my Jazz to do list:

1. Hire an experienced lead assistant coach. Scotty and Horny are great guys, but this team needs some real coaching chops.
2. Get the Millsap or Jefferson for Granger deal done. Its been rumored forever and now that we have an excess big, its time to cash in that trade chip.
3. Re-sign Earl Watson. He's the kind of lead-by-example type that this team needs.
4. Make Gordon Hayward and Devin Harris the team captains. Team captains should always be starters and they should be your best players. Favors isn't ready yet, and you can't leave it to rookies, so Gordon and Devin are your guys.

Millsap, Bell and Rights to Ante Tomic for Granger. Almost exact salary match.

I say go forward pretty much as is, see what we have.

No reason to add salt to the fries before we've tasted them.

Ask the fans to help fund the RMR. We all want to see Kanter,Favors,Evans,Hayward,Burks

Really showcase millsap early in the season to bring his trade value to an all time high then trade him for a solid young prospect and or draft picks(involve a point guard if possible)

Get Bell the hell off this team. dont let the dino take our youngins minutes.

Have an open competition between burks and miles for the starting SG spot.

HIre Karl Malone for any position.

I don't mind him being on the team, I just don't want him on the floor.

I would imagine so. As much as it scares me right now he's probably the starting small forward on this team.

He's got a lot of ability but makes very poor decisions on the court. Extremely poor decisions.

I agree. I think it's time for our spoiled fans to be patient, and allow us to rebuild. I think if we have one more 2 lotto combo next year we should have the players or assets to rebuild okc, portland style.

I groan every time he steps on the court. Awful, awful, awful decision-maker. He's a good kid, and I wish him success on a personal level, but he's an albatross and I long for him to take his "talents" elsewhere.

OKC had three top 5 picks and one top 2 pick. We had two top three pick and a handful of late lottery selections. Not to be the debbie downer, but this is why I favor tanking. A couple top 5 picks would dramatically heighten our chances of winning a championship than the warriors protected pick and a 2011-12 record of 35-47. Trading Jefferson, Harris etc for an unprotected pick, playing Burks at point and suffering through a 20 win season would improve our chances dramatically.

A. I have watched Miles for five years. He is not a good player. I would rather have Kirilenko. Forget about trades.

B. If the NBA gets its act together and we have RMR, preseason, regular season, and avoid the injury bug, this team will make the playoffs. I would think a slow beginning and good finish as they learn to play together.

C. If the team does not have a chance to get a lot of practice before the season, we will be in the lottery. Lots of talent, too inexperienced. New coach, new PG Harris, Favors sat so much he's practically a rookie, Hayward still inexperienced, 2 rookies expected to play and not sit...

If B, enjoy the playoff run. If C, hope for 1 and done in college remains so we can have a very deep draft. Cross your fingers for luck in the lottery.

I thinks franchise can always be "competitive." We can be in that 6-8 range, but we have to take a chance and pray for a superstar situation like Durants to turn our fortunes around.

I was a big fan of both picks because they have a very high level of bust ability, but they could both end up being the best player in the draft. Burks could be the best guard, and Kanter could be the best player, period. I actually like our depth. Team needs to be legit 9 deep to be playoff contenders.

Releastically we go into the season with:

Harris/Watson/Price(? is he still under contract)
Hayward/Bell/Burks
Miles/Evans
Milsap/Favors
Jefferson/Kanter/Okur

I could see the Jazz adding a vet SF. or maybe if a guy like Malcom Lee doesnt make the bulls we would add them. I know the Jazz really like him a lot.

Pacer fan here. FWIW I see now way Milsap and filler gets Granger. Jefferson because he can play both the 4 and 5 is more interesting but, I can't see the Pacers making that move (straight up) either. Pacers without Granger is a team with a bigger hole than they are right now with Hansbrough playing the 4.

Question: Since the NBA changed it's high school draft rule (2006), how many superstars have been drafted outside the top 6?

Answer: 1 --- Rajon Rondo, who imo is hardly a superstar.

Everyone else has been top 5, Brandon Roy (also a pretty weak superstar) was #6. Everyone was top 4 outside of Kevin Love, a pretty flawed player in his own right.

You used to be able to find gems in the late lottery (kobe, stockton-malone, bynum, etc) but since the rule change, they've become exceptionally rare (so far... non-existant, although it's a small sample size).

If we don't get another top 5 pick, the only way we can win a championship is a pistons or mavs style whole team effort, with excellent chemistry, stellar defense, a bunch of veterans and a very flawed opponent in the finals (an injured, apathetic lakers team or a brand new, poorly coached, difficult combo the heat dealt with). Even the mavs model is hard to emulate, given we won't have a superstar like dirk. International scouting has gotten far better than it was in the 90's and early 00's, prospects are just more known quantities than in the past.

As a fan, I'll root for whatever product ends up on the floor. But I also wish KOC would ignore how many wins we get in the next 1-2 years, and solely focus on how to maximize our potential in the 3-5 year window. This doesn't sell tickets, or playoff games and isn't good for the team coffers. But his job is very secure, and as a fan, I'm in no rush if I think current struggles are enabling future potential. I think our draft reflected this strategy (high risk, high upside), I just hope our regular season strategy does too.
