Project for Coaches' Contracts in the NBA?
It's probably way too ambitious [and I may be the only person who cares about such thing] but why the hell not... I've just compiled a list of 217 coaches' salaries out of 287 possible in the last 8 years:

Do you know any missing information? If yes, please let me know here or in the comments.
Thanks in advance!

And what was the result of that look?
BTW, I've changed a format by splitting tables into different seasons.

Rick Adelman made $4,062,500 a year in Houston.
McHale's contract numbers aren't out there yet. I'll tell you when I know.

Re: Project for Coaches' Contracts in the NBA?
Very useful resource. Thanks for putting the time in!
Jim O'Brien made around $3m on his last year (2010-11) with the Pacers. Link:
http://blogs.indystar.com/pacersinsider ... _obrien_s/
Suggestion: why not have each season on a different page? Then the long tables won't look so overwhelming. You can default say to the current season, with tabs for previous seasons.

Firing O’Brien would have put the the Pacers in an even tougher position financially because owner Herb Simon would have had to cut O’Brien a check for around $3 million and also pay the new coach’s salary.

Can we assume it was his yearly salary in Indiana? Or did he earn less in previous years?

Thanks for the missing information and feedback!
And let me explain why I did this that way: IMHO you are not supposed to read it from the top to bottom - then it would be overwhelming and I would agree it should be on different pages - but in my mind it should be presented in a way which is the easiest to search for something because most [if not all] people who visit this page will be interested in one or two particular salaries or in all of them for some studies. On different pages you would have to click more times between seasons to find information you look for but on one you only need to press Ctrl+F, enter name and you are done. Does it make sense?

I think I read somewhere that it was somewhere between $2-3m in previous years, but can't find a link anymore sorry.

Come on, I'm not disappointed that you have added "only" one information ;-)
That's still a great find which I'm thankful for and I've mentioned it in the comments.

Re: Project for Coaches' Contracts in the NBA?
This article from last June said that Spoelstra was entering the "third and final year" of his contract in 2010-11. No salary figure was mentioned.
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/heat/erik-spoelstra-says-talk-of-pat-riley-returning-730672.html
According to this article, Sonics signed Carlesimo to a 2-year contract in 2007 at $3M per year. Note: Before 2008-09 season, team should be called Seattle, not OKC.

I know that but I feel like there should be a continuity of franchises because without it you could get a sense there are more teams in the league than they are. Am I wrong? Should I change it to Seattle?

Anybody who is going to take the time to look at your work is knowledgeable enough to know the Seattle franchise moved to OKC. And the fact that the Hornets did play in OKC from 2005-07 could actually lead to confusion.

Re: Project for Coaches' Contracts in the NBA?
Attached are a few comments on the contracts of current head coaches. I hope you find at least some of them helpful, but please keep in mind that they have not been independently verified.
Atlanta: Drew’s contract contains a third year team option at $2.5 million.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5282105, http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/05/jamal ... tion-isnt/
Charlotte: Silas signed a one-year extension that takes effect next season.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6128112
Chicago: Thibodeau signed a two-year contract, with a team option for a third. The total contract value including the option is $6.5 million, making the average $2.2 million.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/nba/n ... id=5254978
Dallas: Carlyle’s contract is for $17.5 million, making the average $4.4 million.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3389463
Golden State: Jackson’s contract contains a fourth year team option.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6632935
Houston: McHale’s contract contains a fourth year team option.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6613323
Memphis: Hollins’ contract is believed to start at roughly $2 million.
Source: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/20 ... t-extensi/
Miami: Spoelstra’s three-year contract was extended for an additional season.
Source: http://www.hoopsnotes.com/teams/miami/m ... -contract/
Milwaukee: Skiles’ original four-year contract was extended for an additional season.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5730510
Orlando: Van Gundy signed a two-year, $8.5 million extension last July; it also includes a $1.0 million bonus if the Magic wins a championship.
Source: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/07/28/magic ... xtensions/
Phoenix: Gentry originally signed a two-year deal through 2010-11, with a $2.15 million team option for a third. The team option was picked up (though only half is guaranteed, with the rest subject to the lockout). Gentry then signed an extension for 2012-13 for an undisclosed amount, adding a fourth year to the contract.
Source: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/ar ... n2010.html
Sacramento: Westphal originally signed a two-year deal paying $1.5 million in base salary each year. Incentives brought his 2009-10 compensation closer to $2 million. The contract also contained a third year team option for $2 million, which was exercised, making the total contract three-years and roughly $5.5 million.
Source: http://www.aolnews.com/2010/04/12/kings ... ls-option/
San Antonio: Popovich’s latest extension was for four years (through 2011-12).
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3416279
Toronto: Triano’s contract was for two years, with a team option for a third. The option was declined.
http://www.nba.com/raptors/news/2011060 ... jay-triano
Utah: Corbin signed a two-year contract which starts next season, with a team option for a third.

In addition, below are a couple of formatting suggestions:
While you have a “Years” column, there is no easy way to tell how many are in the past and how many are still to come. You may want to add a column entitled “Signed Through.”
I tend to agree with winter_mute_13 that this information would appear more organized on multiple pages (one for each season), but that’s up to you.
Hope this helps.

OK, I've changed that.

Thanks for a reminder, I've added this info:
"I don't take into consideration "Team Options", it's simply 1-year extension on a set scale."
Plus IMHO coaches are fired too often before the end of contract to care about this.
answerthink wrote:I hope you find at least some of them helpful[...]

It was not only helpful but awesome. Thank you!
BTW, can we assume that every year of Pop's contract is worth 6M$?
answerthink wrote:Skiles’ original four-year contract was extended for an additional season.
What should I do with this? Threat it as 5-year deal? 4+1? The same thing with Suns' coach.

So I have two different numbers from the same site... what should I do with that?

I completely agree with the first suggestion, although I would present it differently [1/3 = first season of three-year deal?] and I will have to work on that during weekend but I really don't get why it would appear more organized on multiple pages. Could you add an explanation for this? IMHO it's exactly the opposite because it's easier to hide something on multiple pages. Maybe there should be more space between tables?

Re: Project for Coaches' Contracts in the NBA?
Head coaching contracts tend to have lots of options, extensions, and less than perfect disclosure. I wouldn’t presume to tell you how you should display it all; that’s up to you. I just happen to keep some of the same information as you’re trying to pull together, and thought I might pass along some of the inconsistencies to help you out.
As for Van Gundy, I believe he signed a 4-year, $16 million contract in June 2007 (that ran through 2010-11), and signed a 2-year, $8.5 million extension in July 2010 (that runs through 2012-13). If you consider the dates in the two links, it should clear up any confusion.
Also, it appears I missed a few suggestions in my list above:
New Orleans: Williams’ contract contains a fourth year team option.
Source: http://www.nola.com/hornets/index.ssf/2 ... _agre.html
Portland: McMillan signed a two-year extension in March.
Source: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6194292
Toronto: Casey signed a two-year, $6 million contract, with a team option for a third.
Source: http://www.thestar.com/article/1012829- ... ring-casey
