David West to opt out
Well, he was on a lot of people's wishlists earlier in the season before his injury. So what do we think? He'll be 31 by the start of the coming season and coming off a season-ending injury. He did say "I want to win and win big" so even though the Pacers have a very promising future, I'm not sure we're on his radar.
People still willing to roll the dice and possibly overpay for him?

Re: David West to opt out
I don't think we should overpay for anyone and I'm not particular convinced that West fills our primary need. he can score but I see the need at behind Roy not at 4 ahead of Josh and Ty.

I think you have to give it a serious look, an opportunity like this might not come our way again. I wouldn't mind something like 4 years/8.5 million would be cool with me.

Two teams that'll be active with David West in free agency: Indiana and New Jersey. For the Nets, especially if they lose Kris Humphries.

Re: David West to opt out
A healthy David West would be the missing piece I think for us. A core of Collison, Hill, George, Granger, West, Tyler, and Roy would be very formidable for the next few years. West would take some offensive pressure off Roy to dominate down low and I think he could be a 16-8 guy with us.
BUT, I'm not convinced that we should overpay for a guy who could possibly be marginally better than Landry/Tyler at 2x the price and for 1/2 of the years ahead. Like I said in the other thread about Landry, not sure West drastically helps our rebounding.

David West is a star caliber player and would cement this team as a fringe contender at least. People used to combine McRoberts & Hansbrough's numbers and say they make a good PF combo - With David West he basically produces by himself what they do combined and does so efficiently. Combine him with Tyler and Josh if re-signed and our frontcourt becomes a significant strength. The Pacers should be on a mission to sign West or Nene if they are serious about contending, in my opinion.

Re: David West to opt out
I'd like to have West, but would he have any interest in us?
He want s to play for a serious contender - we are nowhere close to that.
On the flipside he is appreaching the end of his career (3-4 years max) so would want to secure a good financial deal. We are one of the few teams that can offer him good money and the potential to compete in the playoffs.

The only drawback to getting West is that he's a pure PF who can play some SF, but it's not natural to him which in my mind destroys any significant playing time to Hansbrough.

Great point. The fact that West and Hansbrough are only capable of playing the 4 is a pretty big drawback for me. Is Hansbrough going to develop if he's getting less than 20 minutes a game? Sign West and give him the minutes that should be given to a player you invest 7-8 mil/year in and Tyler's minutes would be cut back substantially. Throw in West's age and the uncertainty of his come back off injury and I'm not convinced he would b remarkably more effective than Tyler.

Re: David West to opt out
If we only get one guy...Nene's the one you want.
West would be a good upgrade but if you want to win big you still need a good big that can handle the large forwards and small centers. West AND Okafor - sure, or Delembert, Perkins etc.
Nene does both jobs and plays good minutes WITH Tyler.
It's hard to think of anyone else that fits so well.
He may cost as much as two other guys though.
Either of these line ups will give us the extra few points on both ends to beat Chicago and contend.
Hib Nene Foster
Nene Tyler McRoberts
Granger George
George Hill Stevenson
Collison Hill Stevenson
Hib Delembert
West Tyler
Granger George
George Hill
Collison Hill
Looks beautiful, but
Hib Foster
West Tyler
DG PG
PG GH
DC GH
A nice team, maybe fifty wins? Second round pretty sure but is it worth the cost? And can you get West if he doesn't think he can really compete?
No sense in spending money on West without some strength in the middle - IMO.
Nene, maybe Chandler... OR
West +

Re: David West to opt out
^^^ True. Not way overspending is key. Overspending is just kind of a common theme for small-market teams like us. However, Hibbert and Hill will be up for an extension next summer, Tyler and Darren the summer after that, and Paul George (assuming he develops like we think he will) the summer after that. Plus, I think Danny's contract will be wrapping up around PG's final year too. So we'll have a lot of extensions to dish out in the not-too-distant future in addition to whoever we add.
I've mentioned it before, but Nene should be far-and-away target #1. Otherwise, we can hope that New Orleans is eying a salary dump midway through the year and we can make a play for Okafor.

Re: David West to opt out
Chube that was a pretty good analysis regarding our short-term future. I agree wholeheartedly.
The way I look at it is that we have to acquire a pf/c. One that provides the necessary toughness along the lines of a prime AD, DD, or Jeff. Both Nene and Okafor offer similar toughness and ability. We can afford to invest in this player because he is the link between Hans and Hibb. The rotation could feature any two of the three.
You can't say that about Landry or West if we signed them. Imagine West/Landry with Hansbrough.
Okafor does have a nasty contract though, i'd definitely need some incentive.

As a Bulls fan I disagree I think the Pacers with Hill and a healthy West would really be a clear cut contender a better team then the Knicks. I think talent and money wise West will be all over the Pacers.
After the playoffs I'm excited for your teams future can't wait for more great battles.

I'd seriously rather have Kris Humphries.
David West is 30 years old and coming off an injury. I don't want us to overpay someone who is on the downhill, and i'd rather see someone younger, someone who wouldn't each much of Hansbrough's production and someone versatile enough to play the 4 and the 5 when needed.

^ No to Kris. The dude has only ever put up numbers in his contract years. Plus I don't want that off court BS of his near our team.

This one says the Hornets offered him 26M for 3 years.
I think we can top that in length and/or amount.

Re: David West to opt out
To the people that said West wouldnt drastically outperform Tyler: Even at 30, West would still have 4-5 good years left in him and 19-8. He's a good enough jump shooter and postplayer to take pressure off Hibbert in multiple ways. He can also create offense for himself when he gets the ball, something that has been missing from our team for a couple years. He outperforms Tyler statistically and outperforms Tyler in terms of fitting in to our team and improving our team. Not sure why Tyler homers are so against this, Tyler could be very effective as an energy guy for 20 mins per game. We're not giving him anything more than that if we're a fringe contender....

Re: David West to opt out
The biggest question mark is that we still don't know how he comes back from injury. Carlos Boozer is the example people use. Would it be worth it to pay top dollar for a guy who probably won't make another all-star team?
So "drastically" outperform is difficult to say at this point, given that Tyler will most likely show improvement while the 31-year-old West post-injury will most likely not perform as well as he has next season.
I think most likely David West will be an improvement over Tyler, but only for about 2 years. I really don't see West being any sort of long-term answer at PF.
