Barbosa's decision could be huge. Think it's expected in a couple of days

BC and Casey said tomorrow we should have a decision. As stands though because Val is staying over we have a committed salary of $47,129,432.

Under the current CBA that's roughly 10.9 million cap space. Barbosa opts out it goes to 18.5 million roughly (cap at 58 million)

You could be in a very good cap position if Barbosa opts out and you were to get a amnesty clause that could be used on Calderon... Could be major players in FA for someone like Marc Gasol.

I would like to see us dump Reggie and sign Dorsey. Similar players but much cheaper.

Given we'll lose Reggie's 'glue factor'....but we're not winning any games anyways!

I'm hoping we can get Wilson Chandler or a Shane Battier I think they would be a great fit along side DeRozan.

ok so going to update this thread. Couple of points

- JV will not count against our cap as hes playing overseas this coming year
- Barbosa HAS picked up his player option

Adrian Wojnarowski reports that David Stern is targeting a $62 million salary cap in negotiations. It seems like the owners have backed off of their demand for a hard cap, which is positive news because the players would never accept that. The "flex cap" would allow certain teams to go exceed the limit or operate beneath it, so it should be interesting to see where negotiations move from this point. Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said the new flex cap

Current Toronto Raptors Salaries:

$47,129,432

- No JV
- Barbosas contract added

Possible Cap Space Under Old Cap (58 million)

10,870,568

Possible Cap Space Under New Cap (62 million)

14,870,568

Throw it all at either Marc Gasol or Wilson Chandler in a sign and trade. Offer anything but DD, Ed and 1st rounders, and beg them to take Bargnani.

I would trade Ed in a S&T for Gasol.

I wonder how the trade exemption works within all of this.

That's misleading - JV's capspace is effectively deferred to the beginning of the regular season. We can't use the space prior to that. So while it affords us some flexibility in off-season trades, it does not equate to an improved capacity to sign FAs in the offseason.

Huh? He hasnt signed his rookie contract and wont this year (playing overseas) so im confused as to what your saying. We have his rights and thats about it much like the Rubio situation last year. Didnt cut into MIN cap space.

You can't be serious...

This kind of move would screw us for years to come. Wilson Chandler?! :nonono:

What we do is exercise a little patience. Go after a vet C in Free Agency and sign him to a REASONABLE and MOVABLE contract. I say if we can get Afflalo on a Kleiza like contract, we do that too (if we're serious about moving forward with DD as the SG of the future. Afflalo is a good back-up option that can hit the 3 and defend. If there is an amnesty clause, you amnesty Kleiza at the end of next year. Move Bargs and Barbosa for picks or young assets. Keep Calderon since he expires next year. Bring David Lightly to Training Camp

Jose/Bayless
DD/Afflalo/Lightly
JJ/Kleiza/Lightly
Ed/Dorsey
FA C/Amir

+ hopefully a few more pieces gotten from moving Bargs and Barbosa. This team loses but develops and we bring in Barnes or Miller next year with our pick and hopefully someone like Kendall Marshal with another pick (Barbosa trade or something). The vet C should be a good mentor, character type guy and get 3 year guaranteed or so to help ease the transition for Val. You can see a team coming together. But the key will be spending our money wisely.

Yeah Wilson is 24 years old, why do you want to use that money on veterans we're a rebuilding team.

Wilson is younger, a better player, and he can be our starting 3 for years whereas with Affalo he can be our numbe 2 SG, brilliant! We have Barbosa, Calderon, Bayless, Derozan and likely Weems under contract next year, yeah Affalo makes a lot of sense.

Look at the forwards you have on your depth chart! The only one I want to see in a Raps uni is Davis.

Kabongo/Bayless
Derozan/Barbosa
Chander/JJ
Davis/Amir
Val

Tank next year, send out Andrea and Jose for whatever you can get. Draft Kabongo! And sign a good C with cap space.

Alternate scenario- Sign and trade Gasol, and draft Harrison Barnes.

Calderon/Bayless
Derozan/Barbosa
Barnes/JJ
Ed/Amir
Gasol/Jonas

Wilson isn't worth more than 6-7 million. -_-

He's slightly above average as a player, average being 15 PER. His room to grow is extremely small. And you want to 'throw it all' at a player like that?

Actually, I just checked. The guy can't even sustain an average of 15 PER for his career.

ESPN has Chandler listed at 25 years old but anyways my stance on him is if we can get him in a S&T (sending out either Bargnani (most preferable) or Amir) then id be fine with it. However the only way your going to get him out of DEN is if you overpay and at that time it wouldnt be worth it. So unless a S&T is agreed upon i would pass.

Wilson is a better player than anyone we have at the 3 spot but is it worth it overpaying for him so DEN doesnt match (hes a RFA) thats i think the big question. Now if he was UFA and you could get him at a reasonable price id be all for it. However when you factor in having to overpay for him the benefits diminish. Thats why i want a S&T for him.

Thats the point I was trying to make.

Throwing our money at Chandler makes no sense when there are star-caliber SFs coming in next year. What we do lack though is reliable SG to play off the bench when DeRozan needs to sit. JJ is a definitely a good option off the bench at the SF position for the future. So I see no reason to throw that money at Chandler.

Perhaps we could stick this thread, hopefully the lock out is going to be over by this week.

Perhaps we still need to know/update on the OP:
1) The cap, it could be went back down to $57m
2) Trade rules, it could be 145% instead of 120% from the previous CBA
3) Cap holds, other than Weems, I believe we did not offer any contract to other players

Other than that, most of the things from OP is correct.
