Re: Klay Thompson Thread
KevMart=super quick, gets to the line a ton. Klay was okay at that in college, but won't be averaging 10.3 trips to the line any time soon.
Draft Express lists Mike Miller as a Klay comparison. I'd be thrilled if he fairly quickly becomes Mike Miller (that is, the Mike Miller of five years ago).

Never will be the rebounder or defender that Miller is imo.

I would have prefered the Ron Artest clone.
Kevin Martin is extremely quick...Not even close.
But Kevin Martin also has no wingspan. Klay is 6' 5.75" with 6' 9" wingspan and the same standing reach as Lou Amundson.
And for however much its worth Klay tested well in agility.
Look at Francisco Garcia, Evan Turner, and Andre Iguodala vs Klay Thompson.Code: Select all
Garcia Thompson Turner Iguodola
Height 6' 5.75" 6' 5.75" 6' 5.75" 6' 5.75"
Weight 190 206 214 214
Wingspan 6' 10.75" 6' 9" 6'8" 6' 11"
Standing Reach 8' 7" 8' 7.5" 8.7.5'' 8' 9.5"
No Step Vert 27.5 26.5 27.5 30.5
No Step Reach 10' 10.5" 10' 10" 10' 11" 11' 4"
Max Vert 31.5 31.5 34.5 34.5
Max Reach 11' 2.5" 11' 3" 11' 6" 11' 8"
Bench 5 5 9 4
Agility 10.63 10.99 11.06 11.17
Sprint 3.33 3.24 3.27 3.18
Interesting chart. Thompson to me does look a lot like Garcia in terms of their built and games. Garcia IMHO is a pretty under-rated player - A good starter as long as he can bring some consistency to his game and stay away from injuries.
Garcia is also a Ok defender because his length can bother a lot of players, though he lacks good foot-speed in general. He's also not that fundamentally sound, but better than 90% of players on the Warriors squad.
I criticized the Thompson-pick in the draft thread but for the record, I have no personal agenda against Thompson as a player and actually do like him (I just don't think he's a good fit). If Thompson can become a Garcia-light in his first season I'll be happy. Thompson does have a better upside than Garcia because supposedly Thompson's shot in purer/better.

Re: Klay Thompson Thread
Didn't someone post Curry vs. Klay's shooting stats from the NCAA and Curry was already a better SG?
Klay is long, and that could turn out to be worth something, but right now comparing him to Monta or Curry is doing both of them a huge disservice. He's a backup unless he overachieves. Which is fine. We needed a backup G. I'd have taken one who can defend, but hitting open shots has value for me so I'm not unhappy.

Re: Klay Thompson Thread
In a Radnich Lacob interview today (just heard part of it) Lacob said that KT reminded him of a "taller Steph Curry" (funny but I've said that a few times and I see delsol agrees with me and Joe). He also said that he talked with Johnny Dawkins the Stanford coach who has seen KT play and was told that all this about him not being able to defend was nonsense, so we'll see how it turns out. Seems like these guys Lacob & Co. did their homework and he seems fairly confident that this was the right pick for them. Can't go wrong sticking with the Logo.

Don't rule out him being an eventual Steph Curry replacement if we can get a franchise big man for Curry & Lee while Curry is cheap.

It better be a DHoward extended.

He's a faster bigger Stephan Curry. Watching Curry, Klay and Dorrel stroke the three is going to be insane....
Nick Name Alert. Steph, Klay and Dorrel....the THREE Musketeers!
Poor Udoh will be doing most of the defense dirty work lol.

Assuming that Klay pans out to the point where he can replace anybody, I would take Bogut and another starter not named Whackjack.
Lee&Curry for Bogut, Ilyasova & Livingston

Re: Klay Thompson Thread
Jeez CSN is weak. Chronicle live had Klay and his dad on today, and Radnich and Matt S. basically grilled them the whole time. I get that approach for a coach or veteran thats been on the team a while, but you would think the Warriors network would want to make him feel like he is wanted and at home.
Just had a weird vibe to it. Radnich is absolutely terrible.
that being said... the Thompsons handled it well and came off as much classier people than Gary or Matt.

So having not looked much at numbers like this, I have a stupid question. Thompson and Garcia (for example) are the same height, and Garcia has a longer wingspan. But Thompson has a higher standing reach. How do you get a higher standing reach than someone who is the same height as you and who has longer arms? Are his arms mounted on the side of his neck or something?

Garcia could have broader shoulders. Wingspan is measured with arms out across so it doesn't necessarily say that Garcia has longer arms.

Oh. Yeah, sure, that makes sense. Wingspan would also encompass any differences in the width of the torso.

After reading this it reminded me of something they are talking about in the Knicks Forum. Check this out:
TrueWarrior wrote:This might seem like a conspiracy, but did Shumpert and Marshon Brooks flub their standing reaches to appear to get a higher vertical? Ive heard of players doing it before. Maybe dont stretch out as much as they can?
Shumpert and Brooks have hella long wingspans (7'1'' for Brooks and 6'10'' for Shumpert) but compared to players with similar height their standing reaches are pretty small, only 8'3.5'' for Shumpert and 8'5'' for Brooks. Teams go by standing reach in order to test their vertical I think.
Lets look at DJ Strawberry. Tested out a half inch shorter than Shumpert with only a 6'6.5'' wingspan, yet he measured with a 8'5'' standing reach? How is this possible? Shumpert is a half inch taller and has 3 inch longer arms. Many other examples...
Derrick Rose is only 6'2.5'' in shoes with a 6'8'' wingspan, but his standing reach is only an inch shorter than Shumpert's. Dwayne Wade is an inch shorter than Shumpert with a 1 inch longer wingspan, but yet has a standing reach of 8'6''. Westbrook is 2 inches shorter than Shumpert in shoes with a 2 inch shorter wingspan, but has a half inch taller standing reach? John Wall is 6'4'' in shoes with a 6'9'' wingspan, but has a standing reach of 8'5.5''? Whaa? I mean I can keep going here.
Shumpert and Brooks must have ridiculously long necks + wide shoulders, but they look normal to me. I guess this is all pointless but its just something I noticed.
