Brent Burns Dealt to San Jose

The Sharks paid a steep price to acquire the 26-year-old Burns, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after next season.

"There's such a shortage of high-end defencemen in this league," general manager Doug Wilson said. "That's why you better move quickly because other people are lined up and involved. There's just not enough good defencemen and centermen around in this league. When they do become available, if you hesitate you don't get them."

They sent a former 30-goal scorer who hasn't even reached his prime in the 24-year-old Setoguchi, last year's first-round pick Charlie Coyle and the 28th overall pick in this year's draft for Burns and a 2012 second-round selection.

They overpaid big time. They gave up a 30 goal scorer on an amazing contract, a very talented prospect who's going to be a very player in Coyle and a 1st round pick. I like Burns but there's no way he's worth that much. Great deal for Minny though, they get a goal scorer to play with Koviu and some more young talent.

Both Holmgren and Murray are douchebags as far as I'm concerned. You sign Carter to an 11 (I think?) extension and Setoguchi to an extension 24 hours before and trade them away? If I was a player I'd refuse to sign with either club unless I was given a full NMC.

disagree about overpaying, number one defensemen entering their prime are not easy to find, let alone to acquire. BTW setoguchi is too inconsistent to be a perennial 30 goal scorer.

The only reason I believe they overpaid is because Burns is injury prone. Otherwise, I'm not too high on Setoguchi and anyone calling him a '30' goal scorer is dreaming - he will never reach that plateau again in his career. As for the prospects, they aren't proven yet but I do like the potential of Coyle.

If Burns is healthy he is a big enough difference maker to put San Jose over the top in the Western conference. We shall see how it all unfolds.

Good trade for Minnesota as well as they've beefed up their forward core for the future, and Seto' is on a reasonable contract.
