The Los Angeles Lakers have hired John Kuester to serve as an assistant coach, it was announced today by Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

"I'm extremely excited to have John join the team as a member of my coaching staff," said Lakers Head Coach Mike Brown. "Having previously worked together in Cleveland, I know what assets he will bring to the team. His ability to effectively communicate with the players while teaching them valuable skills on both ends of the court is a quality that I respect and value. I look forward to working with him again."

Kuester joins the Lakers after a two-year stint as head coach for the Detroit Pistons. Prior to his time in Detroit, Kuester spent 14 years as an assistant coach in the NBA, working for six different franchises (Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, New Jersey, Orlando and Cleveland).

"I'm extremely excited to be working with Mike Brown, as well as to have the opportunity to work with the Lakers, one of the premier organizations in the NBA," said Kuester.

Are people seriously concerned about the Lakers assistant coaches I mean is there anyone here that can actually name one of Carlisle assistants before one of them became the raptors coach or can anyone name Spoletra's assistants or Thibodeau's assistants (coach of the year).Assistants come and go some even stay threw different coaches like Rambis or Shaw or Hamblen. I understand alot of people here have already prejudged how the MIke Brown era will go do you really have to criticize everything he does before he has even coached a practice, training camp, preseason game, regular season game or playoffs game. Also, I want honest answers who here knew who Tex Winter was before Phil came to LA and please be honest. I know when it comes to coaches alot of Lakers fans want Doc, Sloan, Popovich, Karl all on the same bench even though it is impossible just like its impossible to have Howard and Paul and Kobe. Please give Mike Brown a chance because I know if things go great alot of the people who are critical right now are going to be calling for MIke Brown to be coach of the year and the best coach in the league.

We wouldn't worry about assistants so much if we had a whole lot of faith in our Head Coach...
Brown just hasn't done a whole lot yet to instill a bunch of confidence in his vision/plan...

So if hypothetically start 10 W - 12 L big Mike gets booted and we will likely have Kuester as head coach. Swell!

How can anyone think the Lakers after the first 20 games will be under .500 lets just say Lebron was the only reason Brown's record is so good with the Lakers he has much better talent if Lebron had this supporting cast he still would've been a Cavalier. The Lakers are going to be comfortably above .500 throughout all of next season. And finally Slava I think your a great poster here but Mike Brown isn't hiring a staff thinking if he gets fired who would be the best person to replace him from his own staff.

I think they'd pull in Messina if Brown got fired personally...

I really think the Front Office sees this as a throw-away season... Whether basketball is played or not, they'll get a feel for what works on the coaching staff and what doesn't and go from there next off-season...

If we end up playing ball, great... They'll see how everything meshes and make the appropriate adjustments... If we don't, they'll interact with Brown and Staff and see how it goes...

The Lakers haven't done this for real for a long time... Unfortunately I think it might take a while to find the right fit.

Kuester isn't the head coach... so he won't be calling the shots or needing to "tame" any of the players on the Laker's roster. He will do his job as an assistant, which is to make the head coach's job easier.

So what if he's not a good head coach? Lets just see how he does as an assistant. Afterall, Kuester has a lot of experience as an assistant coach in the NBA/college.

We finished the 2009 season under 0.500 in the last 20 or so games. Who knows how out of shape and out of sync some of the guys might be after a lock out?

i think there's a big difference between hiring someone to be a head coach and an ast. coach. I mean, Kurt Rambis has done nothing as a head coach, but he was a great assistant. sometimes people aren't cut to be the main man, i think kuester falls in that category. don't really care what happened in DET, since he's not being hired for the same job.

I wonder if Kareem will get a call? I am just saying if I was a coach of Brown's caliber and I was a fan of the game as much as he is - How in the world do you let KAJ walk away from your staff? Unless he really wants nothing to do with the Lakers in that capacity.
