Time to stick to the blazers?
The Blazers have 2 free agents (Oden and Mills) where they can match any offers. The Blazers stuck it to Utah with Matthews and Millsap, and maybe its time to stick it to the Blazers. Lets assume the Jazz make 2 ridiculous front loaded offers to both Mills and Oden. The Blazers match it making their cap (which maybe a hard cap) virtually impossible to sign. The Jazz get Mills as a back up PG which is good and add Oden as a center making Millsap or Jefferson even more expendable in a trade. The Blazers match the offers and they get hit hard by the cap plus we get to enjoy their anger at the Jazz.

Re: Time to stick to the blazers?
The idea is certainly nice, but, the reality isn't.
In reality there is a financial asymmetry there. Portland ownership has more power than we do. They can afford to take larger risks, and 'bully' less secure teams.
Sometimes a bully will go away if you punch them in the nose. But, sometimes that bully is just bigger and stronger and wants what you have and you have to take the long way to school.
I think prudence says we take the long way.

I think the thread should be retitled "How the Jazz can ruin their own franchise". If the Jazz did this and either player wasn't matched by Portland then the Jazz would be screwed. And even if they did match they wouldn't care. They have a billionaire owner.

Jazz have no salary cap room to chase Oden with. Portlands offer is $8.8 million.

Mills is my least favorite Blazer, and Oden is the biggest risk of a player ever.
Jazz on your face.

Re: Time to stick to the blazers?
We already stuck it to them, by having the most promising young team in the Northwest Divison save possibly the Thunder. It must be nice to have Mathews, but he'll never be a main cog on a contending team. He's an insurance policy for a risky pick in Brandon Roy - they knew he could have knee issues from the start.
I know people like to hate on O'connor. But he may look like a genius in 2-3 years. He went against the grain by trading away his starry-eyed superstar and fast-tracking a rebuilding process that would have happened anyway...with less assets and probably more losing seasons.
Signing a bust like Oden or a perennial role-player like Mills would be doing them a favor. Let them keep a deathgrip on their high-risk players, continuing to pay them hefty sums for early playoff exits and late first-round draft picks.
I like where we're at just fine.

We allready have stuck it to the blazers. If thier is a had cap next season, how much does mathews eat into that. Is he really worth a max contract? Teams that overspent allready will not succeed in a hard cap situation.

Re: Time to stick to the blazers?
In a low hard cap scenario, as the one the owners have in mind, Matthews 6+M for 2011-12 season would be kind of a burden. Lava Rock tried to imply that fact methinks.
However, if a hard cap system is finally applied, owners probably will demand the already signed contracts to be reestructured in accordance with the new max cap figure.

Re: Time to stick to the blazers?
that would by true but in mlb reality when there is no cap restrictions, in nba and with our ownership i dont think we have to be afraid of any one. We could do that trick to the blazers but not this year with those players.jazzfan1971 wrote:Sometimes a bully will go away if you punch them in the nose. Re: Time to stick to the blazers?
Terrible idea. Matthews and Millsap are good players who were worth signing if not matched by the Jazz. Oden and Mills are injured and worthless trash - getting saddled with either one or both of their contracts if Porland didn't match would be stupid.

Portland offered Oden 1-year for $8.8 million. I wouldnt give him $8.8 million for 4 years. What has he done besides break both of his glass knees?

I'd give him $8.8 if I had at least 4 full years of team options @ $8.8 stacked on the back end. Guy will be a steal if he ever gets back to even his rookie production. Knees should be good now, too.

That was pretty funny. Thanks for sharing. Aside from the good jokes it's about as incorrect as they come. Here's Oden's true numbers. http://www.nba.com/home/playerfile/greg ... stats.html They dwarf whatever slcdunk.com pulled deep out of some ass.
Dude shot 60 %, grabbed almost 9 rebounds, and averaged 2.3 blocks in under 24 minutes. There's a reason Portland is willing to gamble on him next season. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if a team could afford to take a little higher shot in the 10 million range.

Words can't explain how tiresome this group of lackeys can be. Point scored, gumble. Well done. You win.
