Mills Tendered QO

Post#1 » by Butter » Wed Jun 29, 2011 11:58 pm

In addition to tendering a qualifying offer to center Greg Oden, the Portland Trail Blazers announced on Wednesday that the team had extended a qualifying offer to guard Patty Mills as well. The offer to Mills makes him a restricted free agent and gives the Blazers matching rights.

This is a flexibility play. Qualifying Mills comes at a small cost and allows the Blazers to either bring him back on a one-year, low-dollar deal or enter into sign-and-trade scenarios with other teams if there is interest in his services. Had the Blazers elected not to offer Mills a Qualifying Offer, he would have walked as an unrestricted free agent.

This move signals that the Blazers believe he either has a future in Portland or has the potential for some level of trade value down the road. It also signals that Owner Paul Allen's obsession continues unabated.

Mills averaged 5.5 points and 1.7 assists in 12.2 minutes per game last season.

Extending the qualifying offer doesn't necessarily guarantee that Mills will be on the opening day roster and Portland's backcourt is obviously crowded with new starting point guard Raymond Felton and reserves Nolan Smith and Armon Johnson battling for minutes at the point guard position as well. Should Mills receive a solid offer from another team in free agency, there's a decent chance Portland would let him walk given the crowded point guard situation and the amount of salaries already committed.

Quick just said that Mills is not in the Blazers long term plans. This was simply a move to allow him to compete for a roster spot next year or to be able to trade him down the road.

A really nothing move. Was to be expected. He will not be a Blazer next year unless a team demands Armon as a throw in in another trade -- why that would happen, no idea.

One of the teams in the NBL (Australian pro league) inquired about his services in case of a lockout. It was made pretty clear to them that Mills' camp expects him to play in Europe next season.

thats a management matter and that's all it is. You still have Felton to make your day kids as he will be the starting point guard

for the meantime, try a hunger strike in front of Blazers office to protest the signing of Mills. Who knows they might give you some freebies :D

All the best and dont take this matter at home. love your family who loves you..

Patty was our 2nd string PG last year.. Seems fitting to bring him in to give Nolan Smith some competition.

All this tells me is that they may value Mills more than Armon Johnson. That shouldn't be a shock if you know how the owner feels about Mills.

also ask yourselves why Patrick Mills shouldn't be offered a QO? why?

probably your parents can help out telling you the truth that the Blazers doesnt want to upset you but they have some surprises for you in the coming days :) how's that

I have to think that there is a place for Patty in NBA somewhere. He had to have been one of the best teammates in the NBA, and he wasn't half bad as a player either. He is young, and he has shown signs of being a quick backup point guard with a soft shooting touch. I personally would keep him over Armon.

On another note, what in the world are you talking about boknoy

there is a reasonable chance that mills is a better player right now (not long-term) than johnson and smith. likewise, if there are no exceptions in the new cba, the only way portland might be able to land a big is through a trade, so extending the QO makes some sense...

dont worry kid, you will have your lollies.

really why you kids are so hot on Mills? The QO has just been tendered some few hours ago and now you found another idea of trading him for bigs. Give the management a break boys. Also the lock-out is imminent and i'm affray that it'll some of you to be wankers :(

With Mills getting his QO, along with Elliot Williams and Luke Babbitt getting their options picked, no news about what they're going to do with Armon Johnson. Like I said earlier in this post, I think they value Mills more than Johnson and I would think Johnson's days as a Blazer are finished.

it's only for 789K, but Johnson's contract is guaranteed for next season

the stuff about Mills and Johnson is academic anyway because the chances appear to be excellent there will be no season

Thanks for the info. I'm actually surprised he got two years, but that explains why no action was taken on his deal. The reason I'm surprised that he got two years as because of the speculation about his future and the fact McMillan said he would have to get back to Johnson after Summer League ended last July.

I think Mills can be an excellent role player in this league for many years to come. An excellent pickup by the Blazers and someone that gives 110 percent everytime he steps onto the court.

Return to Portland Trail Blazers
