Panthers Overhaul Roster Considerably

Post#1 » by WEFFPIM » Fri Jul 1, 2011 5:23 pm

Kinda figured big splashes were coming from them. Wonder how healthy Upshall is though.

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
As per @GMillerTSN, Scottie Upshall to Florida, 4 years, $14 million.

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
FLA signs Jose Theodore to a two-year deal at $1.5M per year.

Wonder what this means for Vokoun

UPDATE:
TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
Confirmed, Ed Jovanovski to Florida.

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
Lilja numbers are wrong...sorry, wrong player. Marcel Goc gets 3 x $1.73M with Florida. My mistake.

NHLFlyers Philadelphia Flyers
by TSNBobMcKenzie
Holmgren: The #Flyers have traded Kris Versteeg to Florida for a 2nd round pick (2012 or 2013 - FLA's choice) and a 3rd round pick in 2012.

Yikes that a lot for Upshall. But I like the Theodore signing, it really looks like they're going to give Markstrom a shot at being their #1 goalie now.

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
FLA signs Tomas Fleischmann for four years, $18M.

This team looks completely different, which is good since no one know what they looked like previously.

I don't like the Jovanovski and Upshall signings. But I really like the rest of the moves they made. Fleischmann is scoring machine when he's healthy, Goc is solid 4th line center, Versteeg is a solid player and they got a pretty good deal for him and Theodore's a solid goalie.

I really like what Florida did. They needed to hit the cap floor and they did it picking up quality players. Too many years for Jovo, but he can still contribute.

They just locked up Bergenheim for 4 years/8 million. Tallon's doing some serious work.

A - they needed to spend a lot to hit the cap floor, but B - they didnt need to give out so many long term deals

The way I see it, they won't be competitive for another 2-3 years anyways, so it may work to their benefit.

They're not even the Panthers to me anymore. It's the Island of Misfit Toys.

When all is said and done, I feel like the Panthers wound up having the best free agency period. Too long of a deal for Jovo, but two brand new scoring lines, a new d-pairing and a new goalie. And they still have $17 million of cap space if they want to do something more or at the deadline.

Not a contender, but they might be able to snap that long streak of missing the postseason now.
