If West gets healthy he would be a great pick up for us...except
He's a bit too small to take on some of the smaller 5s that an "ideal" guy might handle.
He is how ever expected to be a few million cheaper per year than either Nene or Chandler.
So what about the possibility of acquiring West AND a center - that as a pair gives us better offense at the 4 and as good or better D.
And can we get that pair at a price comparable to that which we would need to pay Nene or Chandler by them selves?
Who is the best defensive center we can get and ALSO get West?
With out of course jeopardizing our ability to sign our own guys later on.
Can we get a 12-13 mil. pair better than a Nene or a Chandler?
West + ?

Re: A Mid-level stopper
The first that come to mind are likely too expensive, difficult to pry away, and may not be willing to risk losing starters minutes.
Okafor
Delembert
Jordan
Ibaka
Udoh
Others may not ace the job.
Mcgee
Speights
Hill
Thompson
Biyombo
Varejao maybe?
Chuck Hayes?
Larry Summers?
Still maybe too expensive WITH West.
McBob may be long enough. If he'd gain 15 lbs of muscle and 5 lbs of attitude we'd be good.

Re: A Mid-level stopper
The more I think about it the more I think if we're going to spend 13 mil we need an 9 mill stopper and a 4 mi.l B.U. 4. Maybe Mcbob.
If George (either), or Hib, or Tyler can add even a point or two extra to our offense that will be enough points
What we are lacking primarily is a strong rebounder and good interior defender.
Who is the best big stopper that can be had for several million?
I'd likely take him over anyone else.
Chandler.
but again maybe Delembert instead and save 5 mil. if we have enough points?
D Jordan looks good but I'd like Varejao or Dele against big forwards instead of Jordan... but Jordans younger and some think he can guard 4s.
Hmph

Re: A Mid-level stopper
If David West commands 10 mil per year, I think you make the case for Nene being worth 13 to 14. Reason being that you will never get that defensive stopper/rebounder for less than 4 mil.
I would make an aggressive play for both Nene and Chandler. I'm not saying you overpay but something that starts 13mil a year and declines. If that doesn't work bring over Barac, resign Foster and look to sign a guy like Kenyon Martin or Andre Kirelenko. Maybe you get that done for around 10 mil/yr. Preserve your cap space and see what opportunities follow at the next trade deadline or off season.

I'm glad you said something. I thought maybe I kept opening and reading the same thread by mistake. Thought I was going crazy.
You might as well be sweet

Dalembert is the best defensive stoper we could get but I think he wants to start instead of backing up Roy.
Hayes is the only other guy who we could get on a decent contract. All the other mentions would cost too much to obtain.

I like both Speights and Hawes from the Sixers.

Re: A Mid-level stopper
I'm a big big fan of Chuck Hayes. He's terribly undersized, but he's a smart veteran who gives it his all every night and plays great defense.
Shane Battier once said, "Water covers 72% of the earth. Chuck Hayes covers the rest." I'd be more than happy to grab him, as he can be a rebounding/defensive guy next to Hibbert for cheap, and can defend small, quick Cs.

I wouldn't mind trading for Speights or signing Hayes to fill McBob's role if he gets to expensive.
However, I do not want David West. He doesn't really give us anything we need and is coming off major knee surgery on the wrong side of 30.

Re: A Mid-level stopper
I like Chuck too. I love D and dude plays it!
No doubt he would be a boost to us. If we were to get him I'd be pleased but diapointed. Somewhere down the line a guy who is tenacious and big will put the hurt on us.
Dele is exactly who I was thinking about.
I worry more about affording him and West than I do attracting him.
If we sign west and invite Dele for a work out I think it would be pretty clear to him and his agent that it could be a good move.
He'd split minutes with Roy and I suspect sometimes play with him as well. He would likely not want more minutes than he would get and could expect that the team would excel with his presence.
I do believe that we could compete with just about anyone, and given a break or two beat them in a series.
I think that makes us a contender.
It would require the expected improvement from our youngsters and a favorable outcome chemistry wise with the new additions, but I think that we'd be pretty darn good.

I like that, I think some offense from the back-up center position is a need for this team. I liked Brad Miller until he was ruled out until January. Hawes could be had for the right price, as Philly is going through a sale and financial decisions are difficult.

Re: A Mid-level stopper
Speights looks interesting. He's got great size and blocks shots.
Hawes is a little spindly and wouldn't give us the defensive presence we're looking for.
Apparently neither are thought well of by they're own team, they could probably be had for little.
