Brian Shaw

Pacers, fan here, and now that Frank Vogel is officially going to be announced as Head Coach, Brian Shaw will be announced as his lead assistant. I'm curious about what you lakers fans think about Shaw. I know that Kobe liked him (right?) But what are his strengths and weaknesses as a coach, and do you believe he was a good assistant over there and do you believe he will do well in Indy?

I probably can say for every Laker fan, he was well loved and respected. Brian Shaw is truly a class act and will me more than missed. Obviously his strengths are respect from the players, experience as a player and good mindset (IQ) about the game. Weaknesses, he probably may have some inexperience as an assistant coach on the Pacers since this will be a first time he is not surrounded by some of the best coaches in the game (Jackson, Hamblen, Winters, Cleamons etc.)

seems like he connects with the players very well....he's usually tries to calm guys down after Phil goes off on em, I always recall him trying to console Bynum in his early days when he got yelled at by Phil.

To be honest other than the 3 minute stretch of Kobe - Fisher pick n roll that killed the Celtics in 3rd Q game 4(?) 2010 Finals I don't think there's anything basketball wise that stands out with Brian Shaw.

He did maintain great relationships with the players though but having been Kobe's Godfather when he came into the league kind of helps get everyone else in line.

As others said, he was well liked and respected - many (including me) even considered him a good candidate for the Lakers' head coach position. I think he subbed PJ several times during PJs absence.

i remember phil yelled at shaw because he was too "friendly" with their players. the quote was like, "you're not here to be their friend!" or something along those lines lol. i love shaw, laker organization really dropped the ball in terms of letting him go...although with pj leaving it was inevitable.

Most people aren't going to really know much about Shaw's ability as a coach. They automatically assume that he's good because he has been endorsed by Bryant. Plus, there were rumors of him replacing Jackson. Other than that, there's not a lot to know about his abilities with Xs and Os.

As a Pacers fan I am happy to surround our lockerroom with coaches who are used to winning, it will have a very positive effect on our young core.

He fit in here. The coaches, offense, culture, players. I don't think he will make much difference with the pacers.
