"If you were Rich Cho"
I stole this thread idea from ROF, so bobcatsbrendan over at Rufusonfire.com gets all the credit!
you...the reader... have been transformed into rich cho, new general manager of the charlotte bobcats. you have been given a great responsibility by your big boss, michael jordan. he came up to you today while you were in excel crunching cap numbers and told you this>> " rich buddy, I know your about to make the next step in making my roster a young & lean prospect show. what are your next steps in building us a winner?"
cho>> "gee mike I think the cap space your about to obtain next summer is most important"
jordan>> "well rich I know you have a wishlist, so lets talk moves first, numbers next."
with that your duty now is to asses the free agent market and try to either swap out some existing contracts for something or to remove dollars while adding picks. you have to keep this realistic and not say "trade for kobe" or "lets sign dwight howard after he opts out". this would be within the world of small market possibility.
make your moves!

The biggest decision will be whether to focus on 2012 FA or to take on salary that ends in the 2012-13 season in an effort to obtain better draft picks.

trade for kobe
ololololol
For real though I'd probably date younger chicks and blow all my money on drugs and stuff. And then I'd sign no contract (aside from rookie scale contracts) that went over 2 years. If they don't want a contract for two years, it's not like we're losing much. Well unless it's Kobe.

Their's not to many player's I would be interested in obtaining through trade, or free agency this year, like to let our young guy's play, and look forward to the 2012 off-season. I would like to attempt to showcase Tyrus Thomas this year, the better he play's, the better for us, we either have something to hold on to, or he's showcasing his talent for the other team's, we just accept the best deal that come's to us!

The first thing that I would do would be to offer Boris Diaw and Portland's pick to Boston for Jeff Green, Jermaine Oneal, Nenad Kristic and the Clippers pick.

I guess Nenad Krstic is out of the question since he's committed to playing overseas. Hopefully Biyombo will be better than Krstic.

If I were Rich Cho I would schedule an appointment at a hair replacement center.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Keep following the path that im on by acquiring draft picks and hopefully young cheap assets......
Would definetly make a call to Memphis, they have an overload of wing players like Gay, Mayo, Allen, SYoung, XHenry and they just added Selby in the draft...no way they can find PT for all of them plus Conley, Vasquez and Battier...see if we can get one of them on the cheap to add a little scoring off the bench

Trade DJ and the Blazers 2013 pick for Farmar, Brooks, Bogdanovic and the Rockets 2012 pick
Nets: Dj is an upgrade. And they free up money to resign Deron, Lopez and to build a team around them.
For us: We possibly get a better pick and 2 rookies. Farmar is more money, but could be a good backup and expires with bad porn.
Plus we would suck next season, so a top5 pick for us in a draft full of good sf.

I doubt New Jersey sees DJ as enough of an upgrade to give up Brooks and a pick.

Re: "If you were Rich Cho"
OK I'll try mine. If Cho wants cap space and assets here is my plan. Right now it's hard to find takers for Diaw who would give up the pick, because we don't know where teams will rank.
Trade 1
DJ
to Utah for
Raja Bell & GSW pick (top 7 protected)
Utah gets their PG to fit with the young core of Favors, Kanter, Burks.
Bobcats get worse so our own 12 pick is going to be better and we get a solid GSW pick which in my mind should be between 10-20 next season. This trade should happen as soon as lockout ends. This way Utah has a whole year to evaluate DJ and Kemba gets the playing time needed for his development as the team leader.
Diaw
to OKC for
Nate Robinson (exp)
Royal ivey
Cole Aldrich
While with this trade Bobcats don't get the pick they get Cole who is a first round talent.
For the OKC reasoning is simple With Ibaka and Perkins starting they need a veteran presence to come of the bench and play both positions. Cole has underpreformed so far. This trade is simmilar to Muhammed for DJW trade.
And at the trading deadline we could trade Bell to a playoff team so how about Bell for Livingston & some second round picks or cash.
Lineup afterwards:
Walker/Livingston/Nate
Henderson/Carrol
Maggete/Chuningham
TT/DJW
Biyombo/Aldrich/Diop
With 4 first round picks in the next 2 drafts
I know with these trades we dont get no extra cap space and only gain a GSW pick at expense of DJ, but We have to trade DJ while his value is still high and Utah could be the only team willing to give up a valuable pick for him.

I think too that trading DJ is important, because he will be destroyed by Kemba, so by February he would be less valuable. Trading him to Utah is a good option, but the Jazz really could not give us anything in return. The Warriors pick is nice, but we really need some youth and a veteran pg back. A 3way trade could give us that.

I don't understand why playoff team would want Raja. He can't play anymore, he had his last better season with us, he will retire soon. A playoff team would take Diaw instead. He is useful from the bench and is an expiring also.

Yes! But if I was Cho I would try to rob them.

Re: "If you were Rich Cho"
I also think DJ is a very tradeable asset, and also believe he could be dealt soon after the lockout ends. Kemba is the future, but we will need a veteran PG to take the pressure off his learning curve. Agree that DJ is an assset here too, but I'm concerned he will regress again with Kemba taking charge. Could he be our reserve PG? Absolutely...but will he accept such a role, and can he thrive in it?
If Cho is concerned about the answers to those questions, he may look for a deal.

I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Xavier Henry might be a nice fit next to Hendo in the same way that Jordan Hamilton might have been a nice fit next to Hendo?

DJ Augustin/DJ White
for
Xavier Henry/Grievis Vasquez
would they do that??
I like the idea of all tall PG playing behind Kemba.

Re: "If you were Rich Cho"
I honestly believe that the smartest way to use our capspace apart from signing young talent for cheap through free agency is to take on horrible contracts with draft picks & or prospects.
The reality is that as a small market team our chances in free agency are slim with veteran role players let alone a superstar, apart from extremely overpaying we don't have a chance, we need to be proactive with trades & the draft to get legit elite talent.
Do you think SA would do this??
CHA trade: Boris Diaw/DJ White
SA trade: Richard Jefferson/Dejuan Blair/1st Rd Pick(2012 unprotected)/2nd Rd Pick
They are desperate to get rid of Jefferson's contract & Diaw's expiring would be worth giving up Blair & a late first. They are in win now mode & we are not. Maybe we could squeeze them for 2 first round picks.
Get on the phone Cho...fine or not!

Re: "If you were Rich Cho"
I just realised e'd have 20m on the payroll between Maggette & Jefferson...lolz, oh well we've got to make the league minimum somehow & our front court would be strong.
