As in basketball, Bobby had trouble reading the cards.

But, like a playoff team with no inside presence, he shouldn't be shocked.

Bobby made a tight laydown. Good fold. What are you talking about willis?

More impressed with Dan Negreanu calling out the Jacks.

That's some frightening stuff, ain't it? I've been there. It's disconcerting, to say the least.

I thought I was a damn good poker player. I made a nice bit of cash at house games around town. Then I sat down at a semi-big money table at the Bellagio. Within 5 minutes, I felt like a 13 year old girl with daddy issues on Myspace. They sniffed me out in an INSTANT.

P.S. Not that I'm bitter. Quite the opposite. That moment was useful, in that it kept me from deluding myself. I wasn't a real poker player, after all. Oops. That moment saved me a decade's worth of trouble and loss. Instead, I went home wiser and only $700 poorer. Cheaper lesson than one class at HCC. A deal, by anybody's standards.

As adults, we need those moments when we find out You. Are. Not. Good. Enough. I had that basketball moment the day after I made the college basketball team as a walk-on. I was feeling like hot s**t on toast. Scrimmage started with the "real team" and the first time I took it to the rim, a guy 4 inches shorter than me stole my dunk. Grabbed it with two hands from behind while I was about to do the White Guy Streeeeeetch Throwdown.

Teaching moments like those are useful. They tell us to look in new directions. "Short dude just stole my dunk with two hands??? From BEHIND!!?? Oh crap. Maybe I should change my major."

I should clarify. Those moments are useful teaching tools if we're self-aware enough to acknowledge them.

*****edits: Exactly how many typos can I make in 3 paragraphs? A question for the ages. I'm gonna blame it on the new keyboard, but that's a lie and we all know it.

He was reckless. Incredibly dangerous flop and he kept barging ahead like Russell Westbrook, out of position and out of his depth??

NOT smart.

He had overpair(jj) on a 688 suited board and was playing against a super aggressive opponent. Lots of people would've gotten broke on that hand(me included) but he made a tight fold. I think bobby is pretty good as far as athletes go.

You're right. As an amateur, he did well. I never said otherwise.

My point was simpler.

It was: "There are times when life shows you who the amateur is. Sometimes it's YOU. Acknowledge those hard truths and move forward."

Daniel Nagrenhoweveryouspellit knew Bobby had pocket jacks 1/10000th of a second after Bobby saw his cards. It's his job to know, and he's good at his job. Poker isn't Bobby's job. He's not 'that guy' in 'that sport'.

Bobby knows that now, I hope.

P.S. Mr. Sura, if you're reading this post, please do not be offended. You're a bad mother trucker. If I had to choose who was going to whip my ass worse in a dark alley, I couldn't choose between you and Stackhouse. That's saying something. He's 5 inches taller than you. And I'm pretty sure he's killed many many men. He plays with a blade in his sock, as you well know.

That being said??....

You are the meanest white man since Charlemagne. My hat is off. Please don't hurt me

I got a similar story too...

A buddy of mine were reminiscing about our stints at the University of Kansas math department as wannabe graduate students. We both washed out. He went to do physics instead and I got a job.

He was very mad nobody took the time to tell him that his head was just inches above the water and was wasting his time. I on the other hand, got told by more than one person, and didn't take it very well at first. Once I told him what happened to me and how I reacted to it, he kinda understood why he never got the memo.

Self awareness is best cultivated by oneself. Too often the pedagogical institutions are expected to do a lot of spoon feeding even when it's probably bad for the student. Sports is one of the last areas of tutelage in schooling where IMHO, the students do as much of the teaching as the coach. Moments such as the one as Ribalding describes are why sports education is necessary. Teachers have to be merciful, but kids being the sociopaths as they are, generally don't have to be.

I generally don't look at set backs like that as a game changer right away, but sometimes I could be less stubborn. Nonetheless, wake up calls are generally good. Chiron wasn't exactly a bucket of laughs and his track record is stellar.

EDIT:: Ribalding, you still play recreationally?

Time to shake off that self-imposed 5 day ban and use this 5 day sobriety chip as a bottle opener.

And no, I no longer play cards. I won't even play chess any more. Addictive personality limits my entertainment options.

Oh I don't mean cards. I meant basketball.

I don't know if I could ever really give up chess, even if it's just whipping out the cell phone and playing some android app. It seems like computers don't like to stray from the Sicillian or the French on black on e4, kings indian on d4, and they always play e4 on white and do something played out.

I like playing with people, but that would imply playing with folks whom are balanced and fun to converse with after the game. I don't have chess buddies who are like that in the area anymore. My optons remain the local chess club, whom are filled with chess bums. A most depressing sight.

Oh. Well that's a beneficial addiction. But I'm currently in something of a quandary, when it comes to pickup ball. I'm too old to play with the guys I respect, but I'm too young to play with the guys my age.

See? It's tricky. I'm tempted to take up racquetball until I'm old enough to play with 37 year old lawyers and 45 year old BBGs. They're in shape. But nobody's trying to dunk, either.

For now, I'm a quasi-baller without a country.

Sounds like my world. I'm trying to play once per week (for recuperation purposes). Have got back about 2 or 3 inches on my vertical in a month, but not seeing any pounds remove themselves yet, unfortunately. Crossing my fingers against injury, and also took up racquetball.

Strangely enough, I now seem to have a jumpshot after a lifetime of not being able to shoot.

Go figure.

We all develop a jumper when we're too old to run or jump. It's God's revenge for the sin of slavery.
