R.I.P. Armen Gilliam :(

PITTSBURGH -- Armen Gilliam, a 6-foot-9 forward from Bethel Park who was known as "The Hammer" for his physical style of basketball, died Wednesday night. He was 47.

Gilliam collapsed from an apparent heart attack while playing basketball at LA Fitness in Collier Township, and was taken to St. Clair Hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said.

In college, Gilliam starred on the No. 1-ranked UNLV Runnin' Rebels team that won a record 38 games and went to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament in 1987.

I have a picture I took with him after the game years ago in a book on my desk. Buddies I had in meadowlands security used to hook me up and let me into the players entrance.

Sadly he was only 5 years older than me...as a guy with a heart condition...this freaked me out a bit.

Yeah, and the fact that he died playing the game is sad too.
