The Nets' deal for Williams was the biggest shocker, since very few teams called Utah other than New Jersey. Atlanta inquired but when the Jazz asked for Al Horford, the Hawks' interest died. Williams is a tier up from Horford, if not two, but the Hawks felt they couldn't part with their best/only big man.
Not sure how I feel about this news, given that I think Deron would bounce out of ATL.

“I think that in any situation you got to get a team,’’ Billups said. “It’s not about names, how many people on your team can make the All-Star Game. It’s not about that at all. It’s about putting the right pieces together. You got to have a cohesive unit. You got to have guys that know to play off of one another, guys that are going to be unselfish on both ends of the floor. Those are things that win championships, and we’ve seen that clear as day in the Finals.

From my mouth to the ASG's ears.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Williams career high
WS/48 17.7%, 11 wins (37mpg). 2008
Horford past 2 years
WS/48 18.1%, 10.5 wins (35mpg). past 2 years
Lateral move as we dont have enuff rebounders

I think a big concern is also whether or not Williams would sign. If Williams bolts, you are left with JJ and Smith. Though if you have Williams/JJ/Smith, Howard might be more willing to come.

Re: Apparently we could have had D-Will
My thinking is, if they could have gotten him extended along with Milsap, with a Marvin swap included, then it would have had to be a done deal/no brainer.
Still, I think Hayward, Raja Bell, & un-extended D Will swap for Horford, Marvin, & Jordan Crawford type of deal would have been great if we could have sent Bibby & Evans to Minny for Koufos & Brewer before the Melo trade. Later sent a 2nd to Boston for Semih Erden.
We would have benefited a lot by getting a PG to run the team. Deron would have put Josh in positions to use his quickness & athleticism to dominate opposing 4's in the paint. Hayward would have had an opportunity to make a 2nd half ROY run playing full time at the 3. Koufos would have showed why he was such a great international prospect with his finesse inside-out game. Brewer and Bell would have strengthen our wing defense. Erden would have been a great energy guy playing the 4 off the bench like he was for Boston.
Most would have preferred to have kept Horford because of the slim chance of us stringing together those follow up moves, but a 20/10 floor general with solid D would have been a lot better regardless.

Highly unlikely since you are suggesting that the Hawks would somehow manage to have not one or two but three max contracts in 2012 plus Smoove. Worse case scenario would be Deron bolting in 2012 to go join a team that could afford Howard and then Josh bolting a year later and us being left with only JJ

I like Deron but Devin Harris, Favors and picks is about right or maybe too much. Getting Al and someone else would have been too much because we would have had to add someone else to make the contracts work. No one wants Marvin people so it probably would have been Teague and or Zaza. That's too much for Deron Williams.

Even if you did feel as though that was overpay, then the addition of Marvin would have to be the price that Utah would have had to pay for Horford. From your logic, we would have the upper hand, so Utah would have been willing to take Marvin. I still don't think he is a negative impact.
If he was an inefficient scorer, couldn't rebound for squat, and didn't play no defense, then I could see why no one wants him, but he can score efficient enough, rebound at a decent rate, & play actual man defense. So, with that said, we could at least matched salary and got a young prospect like Gordon Hayward.

good on not making the move.
Hawks can still end up with Deron.
if Deron refuses to resign with the Nets, the Hawks can work out a sign and trade, Joe for Deron, then Nets can make an offer and over pay for Andrew Bynum and Devin Harris.

Re: Apparently we could have had D-Will
I have no reason to believe that Deron Williams would be interested in signing a contract extension with us had we acquired him. I feel this way due to the ASG, but I could be wrong, and thankfully our core players are signed long-term.
Deron Williams would be a nice addition. I wanted him over Chris Paul in the draft, we passed on both, and Chris Paul is the better player, so it looks like I was wrong.
