Cory Joesph Selected With the 29th Pick

Post#1 » by Nolan » Fri Jun 24, 2011 3:07 am

Here's his DX profile:
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Cory-Joseph-5664/

A lot of people are saying we reached on him, he was projected to go mid to late 2nd round. But RC was obvisouly very high on him if thought he couldn't risk waiting till 42.

He's a very young and very raw PG from Toronto and he played last season at the University of Texas. He's got good size for at PG at 6-3 but he's going to need to add some weight to his frame, he weighted in at 185. He's a pretty good athlete, a good shooter and a tough defender. Right now he's a bit of combo guard, he struggled a bit playing the point at Texas last year but he's a okay passer with good court vision.

I like the pick and i'm guessing he's the reason Hill became expendable. Not sure if we see him with us next year, the Toro's might be the best place for him.

A point guard who shot 42% from the field. WOW. No he is not a tough defender. He plays off his man too much, and gambles too much trying to steal the ball.

Not a fan of the pick. I think there were better prospects on hand.

I don't think he'll end up getting much playing time as a rookie. Leonard will, but not Joseph. My bet is Pop brings in a veteran, steady PG like he did with Quinn and Vaughn. The team will need 3 PG. We have the rookie, there is no way Pop is going to bring in another unproven PG.

Even if we bring in Quinn back, I just feel that Joseph's inexperience and rookie-level defense won't beat out Quinn/Whoever for that rotation minute.

I'm not a big fan of it either. But the front office must of seen something in this kid to use a 1st rounder. We could of traded down a few picks or could of risked and seen if we could of gotten him at 42. I don't like the pick but I trust RC and staff, they know what they're doing and they have an excellent draft record.

Um... I don't think much if at all of all the Texas players. They are underachievers... and I honestly didn't see anything that Joseph had that made him a NBA type player much less a rotation type player.

Great pick IMHO. I don't understand why this kid wasn't getting more hype all year.

This draft's Jrue Holiday and similar in situation to him at UCLA.

Give him 4 years he'll be a legit starter and possibly perennial top 10 point guard type.

this guy is known around the forums as one of the biggest clowns don't believe what he says. I am from Toronto and played against Cory in high school and also watched some Texas games. He will never be a top 10 point guard and probably not a starter either. He doesn't have nba point guard speed and isn't very explosive at best he could be a quality backup

Well we might not be able see Joesph play in summer league but it sounds like he's going to be playing for Canada this summer in the Olympic qualifier. We (Canada) have crap for PG's so Joesph should get some minutes and some experience.

I've been pretty disappointed with Joseph as well.

It's not that I expected him to do anything this year, but it's more of what he has showed. I'm not expecting a future all-star here, but I do like someone who shows he got one legit skill in this league.

There's not much to talk about his defense. Yes, he picks up people fullcourt when he's in, but it's not aggresive enough. I have yet to see any PG be bothered by his full court defense. Offensively, he doesn't have 3 point range or the finishing ability. I don't think getting to the paint will ever be his thing since he doesn't seem to have the ability to get by his man like Ford or Parker does.

Right now, his ceiling looks more like Jacque Vaughn. Perhaps when he becomes a veteran and turn 28, he'd be one of those steady backup guy who doesn't turn the ball over and runs an offense. But that's like atleast 5-7 years away from having that experience and becoming a veteran.

Atleast I could say that George Hill was athletic and showed better defensive skills and an ability to get to the rim in his first year. Or that Chris Quinn atleast had a sweet stroke. I barely see any potential in Cory Joseph right now. It's just that nothing about his game stood out. Not one single thing.

I understand what you're saying about not having 1 particular quality that looks NBA level, however I think it is way too early and Joseph is way too young to be so critical of his progress.

With the comparisons to Quinn and Hill, remember that they had years to get to that level, not that I saw much of Quinn in his earliest years, but I wouldn't have thought he'd have looked much either.

I'm not expecting to see much for 1 - 1.5 seasons from now. Hopefully learning from TP TJ and Pop will help in the meantime!
