Bears to be $37 mil under the cap?

Post#1 » by ChronicKerr » Tue Jul 12, 2011 4:31 pm

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_ ... 120m-limit

I had no idea we had this much cash to spend this offseason.

This should be enough to garner a #1 WR such as Rice or Braylon along with adding another starting olineman as well as filling depth issues in the secondary and LB. I can't wait until free agency. Hopefully the final 8 rule in the last CBA won't stop us from getting any of our Plan A guys.

Well, we've got some of our own FA's that need to be re-signed. Anthony Adams is probably a must. You've got Danieal Manning as a possible re-up. Olin Kreutz isn't under contract. We don't really have a backup running back after cutting Taylor. We could really use another corner back. So, it's not like that's all free money we get to spend in addition to what we had last year.

Since when are we cutting Taylor? I doubt Manning is coming back either. I don't think bringing back Adams, Olin, Roach are going to cost a whole lot. We should still have enough money to spend quite a bit on FA's. While I defiantely don't think we'll make a splash like we did last year there are going to be quite a plethora of FA's out there than can start on this team, most notably a WR and OG. If we lose Manning adding DB depth is a must as well.

I'd be so annoyed if we lose Manning. The guy finally found a spot at SS and played well. Manning and Wright will be a solid safety team moving forward IMO.

Taylor should be CUT.

We re-up Adams unless FA offers a similarly priced upgrade.
Add a Big WR - I would be happy adding Floyd from the Charges.
Add a veteran LG
Add a cover corner.
Don't sign Kreutz - he's done.Use his money to sign a younger capable Center

Kreutz is as good as signed. They want the continuity there especially considering they've lost all of the offseason. Bringing in a new guy to do all the line calls with possibly a new guard, rookie right tackle (Carimi) and second-year project at left tackle (Webb) could spell disaster.

Depending on what they expect from Paea in year one, we could use another tackle in addition to Adams. If it's only Peppers on the line who can get a consistent rush then we're in trouble. If we re-sign Adams then our DT rotation is basically only Toeina, Adams and Paea with Melton sprinkled in.

We only have two linebackers on the roster not including the rookie Thomas. Cliff Levingston would like to see Roach re-signed and plugged into the SLB spot long-term while backing up the middle. Sign a bunch of backups from there.

Cover corners don't make much sense in this defense but we do need a capable guy, whether that be a free agent or perhaps someone internal like Josh Moore.

Taylor should be cut. We've got that kid Harvey Unga who sat out last season with an injury. Maybe he'd be ready to take some backup reps.

Danieal Manning isn't as important as you make him out to be. We've still got Chris Harris and Major Wright has played well in the time given. We just drafted Chris Conte with a 3rd round pick so he figures to get into the mix as early as this year.

Manumaleuna should be cut. Bring Des Clark back in a limited capacity for when we need that blocking in the red zone and roll primarily with Olsen and Davis; both guys can get out in patterns when needed and both have improved a bit in blocking.

Lastly, WR is a given. Unless Andy Fantuz looks like the next Larry Fitzgerald, we need an upgrade there. Considering Martz' affection for smaller guys, Holmes might be the best option if he'll have us, and vice versa.

You're right, but I hate this thought process. It is likely theirs. I'll take an upgrade in talent in exchange for continuity if available.

We (collectively) say this every year. Then come those games where we have no one to stop a particular receiver who grabs 8-10 balls and torches us. Problem is, those games have been coming up 5-6 times a year. The defense is always clamering on & on about how they only play cover 2 a third of the time. Well the other 2/3 we need a cover corner who can take it easy when we do play cover 2.

Harris has bad knees. While I think Harris is a better SS than Manning, I just don't think he's gonna hold up this year. I'd rather have him coming off the bench at both spots.

I would like to keep Manning, as well.

It is time to move past Olin Kreutz. He was declining fast three years ago, IMHO.
