well i believe that's exactly what the Pacers need - a 4/5.If David West and/or Carl Landry grow to be closer to 7', they'd be nice additions.. but they're purely PF's.
I have thought about this before but realsically you want your starting unit to play at least half the game if not more together. So say Nene at the starting 4 with 30 min. Then he could only play 4-6 minutes at the backup 5.
It sound like a good idea but try to break down the minutes using a 4/5 player for what your talking about. It doesn't add up IMO.
Nene wouldn't play 30 mins a night at the 4 simply because he can play 5 and that alone means he can play alongside Hansbrough pretty perfectly. He can be your starting 4 and move to 5 to give Hibbert some rest or if Hansbrough needs to play.
We actually need someone big enough to play good minutes at the 5 because other than the aging Foster, who's a free agent, we do not have a reliever to Hibbert. Speaking of which, it is pretty obvious that Hibbert must not play 36mpg, and it would be a big risk if he has to, so the minutes for a back-up 5 would be decent and not just some garbage time.
This offseason, there is a chance we could miss on a PF, but not on a back-up center. So to have someone who could play both spots would be MORE beneficial than to have someone like David West or Carl Landry who are just plain PF's and who will eventually be a hindrance to Hansbrough's development.
If you want to a breakdown on minutes, here's a quick one:
A) If we get a David West or Carl Landry:
Hibbert= 34 - 38 mpg
West / landry= 30 - 36 mpg
Foster= 10-14 mpg
Hansbrough= 12 - 18 mpg
*** This could actually kill Hansbrough's development, and is a big risk for Hibbert playing tons of minutes just because he has to. You can't force West or Landry to play 5 because they can't. so it will leave us with no choice but to play them at the 4.
B) If we get a Nene or Anderson Varejao
Hibbert= 30 - 32 mpg -
Nene / Varejao= 30 - 32 mpg
Hansbrough= 16 - 20 mpg
***With a combo 4/5, we could actually help Hansbrough's development and at the same save Hibbert from playing big minutes. And it is actually a more flexible lineup if we decide to go "small" in some occasions with Granger at the 4.
