Tired of MLB censoring replays at Skydome

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Wed Jul 20, 2011 11:58 pm

From my seat in Section 127, in the eighth inning of a tie game Tuesday night, Aaron Hill looked as though he had stolen second base.

But inexplicably — or maybe correctly — he was called out.

The thing is, I don’t know.

An inning later, Corey Patterson attempted to steal second as well. Same play, same result, similar confusion.

Patterson was called out, only this time manager John Farrell made the hasty jog to second base to argue the call with umpire Tom Hallion.

And on the Jumbotron at the Rogers Centre, in a place owned by one of the world’s broadcast and technological giants, kids waved, girls danced, music played and no replay of either close call was shown.

This is just another example of staid old baseball being behind the times. Instead of giving the fans what they want and what is readily available, they instead deny the paying customer information.

Were I watching the game against Seattle from home, I could have stopped the play. paused it, backed it up, paused it again, replayed it again — as many times as I want — just to get a sense of whether the right call had been made.

In the stadium, though, as a ticket buyer, I get the same old, same old on the Jumbotron. I don’t get the answer to the only question I’m interested in. I am paying money to not be able to see what I ostensibly can witness for free (ok, so my Rogers cable bills aren’t free) in my living room.

In simple terms, that’s just wrong. In technological terms, it’s backwards and old school. And at a time when there are complaints of baseball missing a generation and losing appeal to a younger demographic, Major League Baseball should be doing everything possible to enhance the in-stadium experience, rather than strangle and diminish it.

In the last conversation I had with Ted Rogers, he talked somewhat about his vision for the future of all professional sports. He thought the day would come where there would be a portable device of some kind — made or distributed by his company — available at every stadium seat. That way, he said, you could watch the game live and watch whichever and whatever replay was necessary just by clicking a few buttons.

He smiled as he talked of this kind of future.

In Seattle, where the Seahawks play, the future has already arrived. A similar device to which Rogers talked about is given to all season ticket holders of the National Football League team. At every game, they get to pick and choose which replays in stadium they want to watch, when they want to watch it. Seattle is a high-tech town. Similarly, Toronto should be also.

And while Ted Rogers isn’t around anymore, his company is, but Major League Baseball still controls to some extent the stadium experience. There is slight flexibility from team to team, but for the most part all teams must adhere to similar rules of how to deal with in-stadium replay, which means teams are not allowed to “show up” the umpires or do anything that might incite the crowd or distract the players.

He's got a good point. I've always found that odd as well. Coaches / players can yell in an umps face, yet they won't show replays because an ump may get booed?

They do it so the fans will not go crazy over bad calls that go against their team. They are scared of incidents like what happened in the NFL when Cleveland 'fans" threw beer bottles on the field and at the refs after a bad call.

What annoys me is that they do show replays of a good hit once in a while so you know they can just as easily show replays of the close calls. They just refuse to do it.

Unless you are just talking about technical ability, no, they can't "just as easily" do it. Obviously they have the technology, but MLB would crucify them if they tried it.

Does anybody know about the TVs in the field-view suites of the Renaissance? I've often wondered if they black-out the replays (because they're at the game, and thus required to if they're controversial) or let them go (because they're at a hotel).

I'm sure they don't. Replay black-outs on television for one hotel would be an insane task just to keep a potential dozen fans from trying to shout at the umpire from 500 feet and 10 storeys through a closed window.

My brother and I were saying the exact same thing on Sunday. Frustrating to not have replays.

Is this really a league-wide policy? For some reason I thought they only did this at the Dome.

Seriously guys? Seriously?

Can you imagine the fan outrage when they play a reply showing an umpires call was clearly wrong? Fans already throw stuff on the field even without the replay.. imagine the chaos if there was one...

As far as I know, they do this in every stadium in every major sport. Not sure why he is singling out the Rogers centre and baseball.

I was at this game and was pissed off by both calls. I was in right field next to Ichiro row 2 and they looked safe on both attempts. Were they safe? I know on the concourse TV's they show the replays but they don't on the jumbotron because that would make the umps look like idiots. (As if they weren't already)

Apparently the Mariners owner wants to provide a handheld device to season ticket holders to let them see stats info and replays. I guess these small devices are allowed but you just can't show the stadium screen I guess.

Hill was out but Patterson was safe.

Are you sure about that? Don't they show replays for NBA games? How many times when a controversial call is made, you hear the crowd going "OOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH" in disbelief/shock at the call, and ensuing boo's?

They definitely DO show replays in some basketball arena's.... and you can hear the crowds going nuts after bad calls are replayed. For some reason they do NOT do this at the ACC, which is rather annoying.

But no MLB stadiums do replays like that.

I thought they only do that because they don't show anything that's considered a highlight of the opposing team. I guess any Jay caught stealing falls into this category. It's kind of annoying, but that's how it was explained to me.
