Pros and cons discussion

Now first off I want to say Coach makes Williams guard 2s and 3s regardless.
Secondly I think we can all agree that he can post up, drive and shoot etc.

Problem is we don't maximize our advantages, which is in the painted area. Al can't score in the painted area and has worked on his range but we need those 3 point plays and fouls.

Marvin as a backup 2 gives us some of that, Smith gives us some of that, Joe is an excellent Jason Terry type with post game to draw fouls and potentially Teague can become a better 3 point shooter, pick and roll guard and facilitator next season.

Now to play Marvin as a 2 you need to force that matchup as in giving no alternatives for defenders to guard.
You do this by putting a big Small Forward next to Joe/Marvin.
Marvin does not have an 'advanced' ability to handle the ball but he can do some good things.
- His advanced numbers show he is a pure shooter more than even I admittedly, have given him credit for.
- But more surprisingly is how easily he gets the whistle.
in the {badly edited} video we'll see some of Williams strengths that help him as a 2.
- long arms
- shooting over starter caliber 2s
- steals in passing lane
- 2 big for tweeners, gets the whistle
- 55% true shooter
...........
We know Williams can score 20 easily by doing this with many touches.
If you look across the NBA landscape starting off with Joe Johnson at 6'8 240 and then Williams with more power at 6'8 245 coming off the bench is a solid 1-2 punch.

At the end of vid you'll see Marv beat a 'quicker' 2 guard off the dribble by using the same pin down screen play the Boston Celtics run.
Smith at 6'8 setting a screen for Marv at 6'8 is a bit ridiculous and with 7'0 KG down low he rejects the shot.
and then goes over Smith and uses his 7'6 reach to shoot an easy fadeaway over Smith.

This is what we should be going for Smith posting up Pierce. Setting cross screens and our 7 foot bigs passing into Marvin and Josh Smith posting up Ray Allen or Barea.

In fact we may have won if we put Marvin in for Teague and forced Derrick Rose to defend Joe or Marvin.

Marvin can't change directions while dribbling w/o falling over. There's no way he's a 2 guard.

I don't see Marvin taking on Jamal's role either.

Not that it won't happen; the Hawks have few options to go with if they don't make some major move. The cap is only getting smaller and so far, they have 7 players signed. They need 6 more with what, $7M to play with? Marvin makes that himself.

They move Josh, Marvin gets his starting slot back.....I think we have seen this movie before.

:o If you're 250 lbs, and you have a backup or a tired Jason Richardson (cuz Marv goes in late) how many directions do you need to go?
Go 2 the post or go to the basket.

He can also use screens like Joe needs when he cant shake somebody. More than 1 way to skin a cat. more than 1 way to score the ball.
and most dont involve dribbling around like Michael Beasley, Jamal, and Joe.

If you had Shaquille O'Neal and lets imagine he could guard the 2 and then he'd go on the other end and make Kobe try to guard him.
Would u say he cant play the 2 because all he does is draw fouls and can't change directions?
Marvin may not draw 10 fouls a game like Shaq but thats a very bad argument even excluding the fact that there is footage of him changing directions and even using the pick and roll and beating Dwight and JJ and making the assist.

All this despite rarely having picks set for him in game situations. Its called playing to your strengths.

I've seen Marvelous play a pretty good defensive SG.
I've seen him post or drive past a number of opposing SGs.
That's not all an SG is supposed to do but it might be enough (especially if he continues to hate contact after his back surgery).

IF we could trade Joe for value (I know, I know), playing Marvelous at SG, even with his limitations, would be fine. Consider the successful playoff teams that used defensive SGs and let the offense flow through other players.

Besides, there'd be 10-12 games a year where his size advantage would take over games. If we put the offense on Smith/Horford/Teague's backs and let Marvelous impact his 10-12 games we could be tough.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

as a 3 he's underwhelming but as a 2 his rebounding and physicality become very impressive.

This is why we can't sign another budget guard. We need a big wing to force other backup 2s to guard the veteran Williams and give us a Tim Duncan type advantage on the boards and with the refs whistles 8-)

if he plays and succeeds in raising his possession usage and his shooting % (easily done at the off guard against backups)

then his value will increase  :-? ??

Return to Atlanta Hawks
