WTH is Fisher thinking?????

Post#1 » by snaquille oatmeal » Fri Jul 22, 2011 6:43 pm

"It breaks my heart to see the way guys like LaDainian Tomlinson get dealt with in the NFL," Fisher said of the former MVP who gained 914 yards for the Jets last season after he had been waived by the Chargers. "To see what he'd done for the San Diego Chargers and to get to that place where he was under a contract that's already been signed. The Chargers were able to absorb value in income and potential profits from years of his services, and then at the drop of a hat, based on arbitrary thinking because he's a certain age and he can't produce at a certain level anymore, he's gone. Out the door."

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/214837/Union_President_Fisher_Wants_No_Part_Of_NFLs_Salary_Structure

It is a freaking sport, a bussiness, and entertainment. nobody wants to see a Derrick Fisher (somebody of certain age that can't produce) on the court. Is Fish tyrying to save his job or is he screwing the fans or both????? WTF Fish??????????

He's showing why NBA players will want guaranteed contracts.

lol I was confused by that comment as well. Seems to reveal more insight into his own situation with the Lakers next season.

As much as I dislike Mike Brown's coaching style, there's no way Fisher is playing a lot of minutes next year with him around. Someone should start working with Trey Johnson and see what becomes of him.

That situation Fisher described is exactly what I wish the NBA was like. Boo hoo, you are thrown out the window. If you made 5 million a year for 5 years, it shouldn't matter that you got thrown out the door after that, you have enough money to live lavishly and your kids to live lavishly for the rest of your and their lives. Boo hoo.

i'm not really sure what is so "WTH" about the comment. Guaranteed contracts have always been a core stance for the players union.

It's a WTH because to fans pro sport is about watching the ultimate competition...whereas for athletes its about making as much money in a very limited window. But as other have said they make in a few years what most could ever dream of making. Yeah it's a tough business, but that's what it should be, that's what makes it good.

Yeah this didn't shock me at all. What is he going to say? Aging players should get payed less and have non-guaranteed contracts?

Makes sense. Fisher should have said "I would appreciate guaranteed contracts and making money, but I'll just give you some advice - Cut me and let me try to find a job somewhere else, it's all about the ultimate competition!!"

How does that work and how is what he said WTH at all... everyone wants to make money.

Have to agree here. I liked what I saw out of Trey. With some work he could be very promising

You all are really trippin'.

If you have been working at your job for many, many years under guaranteed contracts, would you EVER want to give that up ... HELL NO.

As a fan of the sport of basketball, I want to do away with all guaranteed contracts because it will only make players play harder EVERY night.

But if I were a player, I'd fight tooth and nail that guaranteed contracts were never, EVER given up.

If you want to be mad, be mad at the owners for signing off on guaranteed (whenever they did this).

If I had been an owner when guaranteed contracts were originally being talked about, there is NO WAY I would have signed off on that.

Overall though, you all need to stop thinking so one sided. Put yourself in someone elses shoes.

At the end of the day, this is America, the land of "rugged indiviualism", where EVERYONE is inherently looking to better themelves first , their immeadiate family second and others as a very distant third.

Players and owners don't REALLY care about the game. Well they do, but, like I stated, it's a very distant third.

Can you really blame them though?

Aren't you the exact same way?

his NBA career flashed before his eyes. he knows this may be his last productive season and the possible whole season lockout jeopardizes that chance of playing.

contrary to what other people believe, I think Mike Brown will still start Derek. he did that with E. Snow in Cleveland, remember? he wants his vets to provide stability before inserting energy players.

1) Come on OP, its Derek, not Derrick. You just HAVE to know that by now.
2) He is the PA president man, he's going to angle everything he can right now. It's all bargaining. This is his way of saying to the owners "you sign someone, you gotta deal with it throughout the contract."
3) No one will dispute that Fish is done and should retire or be a Tree Rollins player-coach.
4) Just remember that anything and everything that is said has some business behind it. In fact OP, you even mention how its a business, you're forgetting that he is still in that business and trying to get the players as much as possible.
5) All of this is annoying. Someone needs to just end the players' union so the fans don't get held hostage by greed on both sides. Another example of why unions are just groups of idiots that try to band together to squeeze everything they can out of other people without individual merit. Someone tell Fisher he's not worth half the contract he signed with a fat smile on his face and his stupid union helped him get there.

I don't think it's that big of a deal regarding his situation with the Lakers. He knows that it's a new system and that we're moving forward, I'm sure he will be willing to gradually take a back seat to the point guard of the future. In regards to his role as the Player's Association, there is clearly some angling going on, let's see how this further develops.

I'd work with Morris and Goudelock.

Fisher will probably start the season as the Lakers starter depending on who they get in the offseason he probably will end the season on the bench. For example if a guy like Sessions is brought in I can see him taking Fishers spot midseason. Also guaranteed contracts aren't going anywhere in the NBA in the NFL unguaranteed contracts make some sense considering the violence of football in the NBA the chance of catastrophic injury is less likely. But it would be nice if NBA contracts were shorter maybe no more than 4 or 5 yrs. I was happy when max contracts were cut from 7 to 6 yrs they should still shave another yr or 2 off.

I just have a feeling that Steve Blake will be our guy in the new (Messina) offense and he'll look very good and disciplined in Mike Brown's defensive system. This guy raked up like 7 - 9 assists a game when he played on Denver with Iverson and Melo, he should do similarly with an offense that's no entire alien to him and a good defensive scheme under a more hands on coach.

Ive said it once already, but I think Blake is going to drastically improve next year now that the triangle is gone.

When I first read the title, I thought this was going to be about him playing in the Philippines right now.
