OTish - Today Truly Is A Great Day

Post#1 » by PkrsBcksGphsMqt » Mon Jul 25, 2011 8:23 pm

About a month and a half ago I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Over the last month I think I was basically a hypochondriac. After I found out I likely had testicular cancer I was paranoid about it spreading all over my body. I started feeling weird lumps just about every where on my body, I was seriously freaking out. It was hard for me to look forward to the football season or anything else on the horizon because I thought I was going to have to be going through chemo and radiation therapy. I was pretty depressed and scared.

So today I met with an oncologist and he told me when they removed the cancerous testicle they removed ALL of the cancer. So I was essentially cancer free. It was such a huge relief. The fact that I found this out today with all of the great NFL news just made the day that much great. That might have been too much info, but I have felt compelled to share the good news with just about everyone I know since I kind of hid it from everyone except my immediate family. If anyone ever has any questions about testicular cancer let me know, I basically know everything there is to know about it now. Other than the idea of losing a testicle, the surgery is incredibly easy and nearly painless, I was shocked.

Alright now back to celebrating the return of football!!!!

I'm glad to hear you got through it man. It's a scary, scary thing I am sure.

My best friend had testicular cancer when we were in High School and he made it through it as well. The only lingering side effect is that he has some amusing nicknames now due to his singular testicle. :P

He was also surprised at how easy the surgery was... Though it sounds like it has become even less painful over the years. He just had stitches for a bit, then he was good to go. Said it hurt for a week when he laughed and that was about it. Was it even that big of a pain for you?

I had ACL reconstruction last September so I know what serious surgery is like. This was incredibly easy. My dad said I was only in the operating room for a half hour. I walked out of the hospital afterward. I had a little bit of pain that night but I could walk around and go to the bathroom and do whatever I wanted pretty easily. The next day was the most painful but it was only painful when I would stand up after sitting down or like you said laughing or coughing. The following days I barely had any pain and was off of the pain meds. I was originally planning on getting the prosthetic since I'm a relatively young single guy but after seeing what it's like after the surgery I'm leaning towards not getting the prosthetic. It's completely unnoticeable unless you're feeling around down there.

The worst part about the surgery is not being able to lift more than 10 pounds for two weeks (so no weight lifting) and no working out (running, basketball etc.) for 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Wow, glad to hear you're all right. 4-6 weeks with no sports would bother me too, but I'm happy for you.

I remember years ago a guy came on Howard Stern telling his story about how he had testicular cancer in one of his balls, but somehow the doctor made a huge mistake and removed the healthy testicle, while leaving in the one with cancer in it. :o

So there was no choice left except to remove the other testicle, which left the poor guy completely impotent. If i remember correctly the guy won a sizable chunk of cash, but he didn't really care because he was in his 20's and left with a dick which wouldn't ever work right again.

I'd be happier for you if you weren't a Gopher fan /ducks/.

Seriously though I've lost some very important family members to cancer including a 17 year old cousin who hadn't even graduated high school yet. Cancer is a c**t and I'm glad to hear that you took it down a notch.

That's funny (well not really) because both my dad and I were worried about that happening to me so we brought it up a few times. They guaranteed me they'd take the correct one out and right before surgery the doctor confirmed it was the left one and then wrote yes on the left side of my groin with a felt pen. Hopefully that guy put some sperm in the sperm bank (something the doctor suggested and I was still going to have a healthy testicle afterward so I'm sure he also did). He should still be able to have sex, it's just that he wouldn't have any sperm. He'd probably also have to take testosterone supplements but he'd still be able to have a normal sex life and children if he saved some sperm.

It is good that they suggest putting sperm in a sperm bank before something like this and that they are so careful to make sure they are removing the proper nugget. It really would be devastating to have to go through the loss of the ability to have children on top of the entire ordeal of having testicular cancer.

Glad to see that you're on the upswing man. Cancer, especially a form that directly hits at ones ability to have children is a scary, scary thing.

Glad to hear you beat cancer, which is far more impressive than any Gophers win since 1960.
