CROWN Video: 2011 All-Canada Classic 1st and 2nd half! Negus

Post#242 » by HoopsGod » Sat Jul 9, 2011 8:25 pm

The 2011 All-Canada Classic was a much-anticipated event being the only National All-Star game of it’s kind in Canada. Held in the Air Canada Centre, the game featured some of Canada’s finest ballers including Anthony Bennett, Negus Webster-Chan, Kevin Pangos, Sim Bhullar and Stefan Jankovic amongst others. Webster-Chan was game MVP with 25pts and finished perfect from behind the arc(NBA three point line of course) at 6-for-6!

CROWN Article: Oakwood standout guard Blake decides on ELON.

Post#243 » by HoopsGod » Sat Jul 9, 2011 8:27 pm

On July 7, 2011, Kevin Blake (6’2″, 185lbs, G, BJCC, 2011), declared his commitment to join the Elon Phoenix, a NCAA D1 school out of North Carolina this coming fall.

Elon prides itself on academics. A fact that was not lost on Kevin when he decided to make his decision. “I really stand for education, and when I heard that they stand for it also, I knew it would be a good fit” Blake said.

CROWN Video: 2011 All-Canada Classic Agunwa Okolie Poster!

Post#244 » by HoopsGod » Sat Jul 9, 2011 8:31 pm

2013 super-talented SF Agunwa Okolie stands at 6’7″ but packs a mighty punch…especially in the paint. The Ajax, Dennis O’Connor standout played solidly in the 2011 All-Canada Classic despite being one of the younger guys on the floor.

In the 4th quarter he left his mark though, as he threw down a vicious dunk on an unsuspecting Kevin Thomas! Schools such as Stanford, Cornell, Lafayette and Elon are very interested in Okolie, who not only shines on the court but in the classroom as well! Check out the action!

CROWN Video:All-Canada Classic Interview with Andrew Wiggins

Post#247 » by HoopsGod » Mon Jul 11, 2011 2:09 am

One of Canada's brightest stars was at the 2011 All-Canada Classic but did not suit up. Instead one of the best players to come out of Canada sat the game out and watch his friends ball on the Air Canada Centre court. The 6'7", 16 year old mentioned also that he will only be playing AAU ball for CIA Bounce this summer. No mention of the Canadian National team(s) though.

Check out Andrew Wiggins and Drew Ebanks at the 2011 All-Canada Classic at the link below

We wont be, we decided to do the AAU super showcase in Orlando, which features more teams. We figure well see the same guys and were more about the recruiting side then covering games so EYBL championships don't mean too much for us.

CROWN Article: Lebron James Skills Academy Final Recap!

Post#251 » by HoopsGod » Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:15 am

After a wonderful experience covering our Canadian guys last year at the Lebron James Skills Academy/ King James Classic, it only felt right to make the trip down to Akron, Ohio again for one of the nations most prestigious camps.
Last year, names like Myck Kabongo, Khem Birch and Kyle Wiltjer represented themselves and Canada quite well at the event. Specifically, Birch and Wiltjer, who used the time to up their status, going up against some of the best prospects across the country.

CROWN's(@CROWNmagazine) Gil Muako(@GilMuako) has the lowdown on Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins at the camp...Click the link below for the details.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/recru ... case-recap

The U16 Super Showcase was one of several tournaments run by AAU basketball during the month of July that made Florida the top destination for college coaches and media members during the late evaluation period of the summer. The 114-team showcase featured many of the country's top rising juniors.

Standout players

Andrew Wiggins (Toronto, Canada/Vaughan Secondary)
2014, SF, 6-foot-6, 190 pounds

Wiggins is an extremely talented player for a rising sophomore. He is a tremendous athlete who plays well above the rim and had three monster dunks in the championship game. He is a solid shooter to 17 feet, but needs to improve his range. He has the ability to dominate inside 17 feet, is a good slasher and can rebound. Overall, Wiggins is one of the best rising sophomores in North America.

Tyler Ennis (Brampton, Canada/Saint Benedict's)
2013, PG, 6-2, 170
He is an impact combo guard who is wired to score. Ennis is a good slasher who finds a way to get in the lane and put the ball in the basket. He has range on his jumper to 20 feet and he can create off the dribble for himself and others. Ennis has a chance to be one of the better guards in the 2013 class.

Notes

In a tightly-played game, CIA Bounce (Toronto) defeated Garner Roads (North Carolina) in the championship, 66-55. Wiggins dominated the game and led CIA Bounce with 28 points. He is a monster talent and perhaps the best 2014 talent in North America. 2014 SG Xavier Rathan-Mayes (Scarborough, Canada/Christian Faith Center) had 15 and Ennis added 10. Hicks had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks for Garner Roads.

I watched the championship game. Wiggins was kind of coasting throughout the game, but he took over in the 4th. This is an evaluation I found by an NBADraft.net forum user. I think he's spot on on his evaluation

It's still very early in this stage of his devoplment, but rising sophmore Andrew Wiggins showed today why some people are still leary to label him as a can't miss prospect... not yet atleast. At only 16 years old he still has plenty of time to expand his game, but the progress he's shown between him as a 14 year old and now still leaves a bit to be desired. At first glance you can easily see that he has impressive physical attributes from a length stand point. Though no official measurments have been recorded, its easy to see that his wingspan is definetely above average for the SF position in which he projects to play in the future. Standing an unofficial 6'7", you like that he's still growing and may ultimately end up in the 6'9" - 6'10" range. While his athleticism is not unwordly, he can still jump with some of the best of them as evident by a 2 handed jam he threw down with authority. Watching him as a 14 year old, he was clearly head and shoulders above his age level. Watching him as a 16 year old, you worry that his progression has hit somewhat of a snag. The biggest knock on Wiggins has been his intensity, and today he made no real strides to dispell those rumors. One minute he's making that "Wow" play, and the next 5 minutes he seems to just be coasting. For a player blessed with such amazing tools, it's hard to see him kind of play down to his competition. Although he was a major factor in his teams win today finishing with about 28 points, you get the feeling that maybe he could have done more. On offense for isntance, there were a few plays where he kind of just tossed the ball to the opposing team exposing his shaky at best court awareness. At times he seemed to just be watching and waiting, rather than demanding the ball like a player of his caliber should. Being clearly the best player on his team, you wish he were a bit more vocal and involved in his teams offense and creating shots of his own. Some of this was due partly to his team not getting him the ball as much as they should have, but being a leader is clearly a trait that he hasn't embraced as of yet. His ball handling is a work in progress, but you can see he is working at it and eventually it should be more than adequate. The biggest knock on Wiggins right now is his jump shot though. Though his shot is somewhat effective, his form is not the greatest as his release point is too low and a split second early. At this point in his progression, it is a must that he works on a more fluid shooting motion if he wants this to be a strength rather than weakness. Right now he can get away with this because of his competition level, but if it doesn't change than defenses will start playing looser to cut off his driving lanes. Defensively, he has the body type of your prototypical lockdown wing. It's hard to guage a player this young defensively however, as the talent level isn't sufficient enough. Watching him though, he does need to put in more effort on this end and work on technique just like any other rising 10th grader. Again, this is a 16 year old we are talking about so he has plenty of time to work on these perceived weaknesses. Kevin Durant is a player who looked earily similar at this stage of his development, and even (falsely) was knocked for not having that "killer instinct" as well. If Wiggins grows another few inches and works on the little things than this kid will be an absolute terror. Of course, no one truly knows how good he will be except Wiggins himself. Going into this year he must realize how talented he is and set out every night to dominate his competition in every facet of the game. He definetely has the tools to do it, but is he hungry enough is the question. This will ultimately decide if we are looking at a future franchise number one option, or instead a more complementary number two or three option on a winning team. Either way, its not hard to come away impressed with Wiggins and he is definetely a player to keep an eye on.

I'm not liking the sounds of Wiggins; he's sounding like the next Lamar Odom.

I can tell you it's pretty clear he's nothing like Lamar, but even if he were, how is that a bad thing? He'd still be the second most talented Canadian to ever play...

I'll admit I haven't watched a ton of Wiggins, I'm just going by the write ups about him not being aggressive enough/taking over and being projected to be 6'9-10....that's pretty much Odom in a nutshell. Although Odom's a great player the knock on him had always been he could of been so much more....

Just look at the numbers when Odom's gone off -- they're beastly! If he would of pushed himself Lamar could of been one of the best talents in the league for years not just 6th man of the year....although not quite as tragic; he almost reminds me of lost potential like Carter.

@Hoopstarscanada (Flagrant Fouls Barry Hayes) "Biggest NCAA D1 coaching turnout for an ID Camp that I can remember was at the Hoopdome tonight for Day 1 of CIA Bounce's Caribana Classic"
