The Official Mexican Primera Division Thread

Apertura 2011 kicks off tonight!

For those who are unfamiliar, the Mexican Primera is split up in two short seasons, Apertura and Clausura (opening and closing). Each season, you play each team once, 17 games total. The eight best teams advance to the post season which is a playoffs format. Clausura is the same format, just reserved home field.

This year, the league is doing a single table instead of dividing the teams in groups. I like that.

Week 1 is in the books! I was lucky enough to catch some of the games. Tijuana played their first ever primera division game and were able to score their first goal from the California born Joe Corona. They lost 2-1 to Morelia but they looked pretty good for a new first division team. I was surprised by their crowd, it looked like a sold out crowd (about 20k) I want to how loyal their fans will be when a giant goes in there (chivas, america or cruz azul)

Demarcus Beasley also started for Puebla this weekend, i thought he looked good.

Heres week 2 matches

Saturday July 30, 2011
Cruz Azul (0-0-1) - Atlas (0-1-0)
Monterrey (1-0-0) - Tijuana (0-1-0)
Queretaro (0-1-0) - Tigres (0-0-1)
Santos Laguna (1-0-0) - Atlante (0-1-0)
San Luis (0-1-0) - Estudiantes Tecos (0-1-0)

Sunday July 31, 2011
Morelia (1-0-0) - Pumas (1-0-0)
Puebla (1-0-0) - Pachuca (0-1-0)
Guadalajara (1-0-0) - Chiapas (0-1-0)
Toluca (1-0-0) - America (1-0-0)

Just a reminder, if you live in the states, just about every game is televised live on the major spanish speaking channels. Galavision/Univision/Azteca/Telemundo shows every game, every week. I recommend watching every now and then :)

Here's a cool website i found if you want help keeping up the the Mexican league (its in English!)

I watched a great final between Chivas and Celaya for promotion to the Liga de Ascenso. Chivas were up 3-1, ended up losing 3-4 with three goals in the second game.

Your avy tells me you like toros, feel free to root for Celaya with me.

How is Miguel Sabah doing?

Four teams left undefeated, all four teams that you would expect. Santos Laguna, Chivas, Pumas and Monterrey all with 6 points early. Chivas and Santos will both have postponed games on Wednesday's doble jornada.

Here is the current standings (which i will try to post every other match day)

Well after last nights win over Monterrey, they sit alone at the top of the table with 3/3 games won. Theyve played great and theyre doing it with a lot of young talent. The Chivas-Pumas match is going to be great this weekend. Two team full of young, homegrown talent. I'd try and catch some of that game if you can, Chivas vs Pumas are always great match ups.

Tijuana vs Cruz Azul is on right now. Its been a great match so far, Xolos got the lead early but CA has tied it up. Tijuana is no regulating this year for sure, theyre an alright team. Poor Atlas and Queretaro.

wow yesterdays Santos-Morelia match was suspended because of gunfire outside of the stadium. Here is Telefutura's feed with no commentary during the shooting

From what ive read, only one police officer got hurt during the shooting.

A photo gallery of the event. It caused lots of panic. At the time, no one knew if the shots were inside or outside the stadium.
