Will Lawrie still be eligible for ROY next year?

Post#1 » by Leolovinliberal » Mon Aug 15, 2011 4:05 pm

Will he not be eligible since he's playing the last three months this year, or will he still be eligible next season? If he is, gotta believe that he'd be the front runner for the award. Thanks

Is that the criteria? If so, you're probably right. AA has done a ton of great things, but keeping Lawrie on the farm in favor of Nix, Rivera, etc. was a bad move along with signing of the bullpen from hell. BL should've been on the team since opening day, especially since this was a supposed "rebuilding year."

Considering how well he's adjusted, I don't know how quick I am to say anything bad about the treatment of Lawrie (not that I was in favor of it at the time).

Right now, it looks like the worst case scenario is it cost him a ROY award. But it also extended a year of control. It's not like we would have made the playoffs with him anyways.

I hope he's not. I don't know who's won it lately, but there was a while there where winning ROY in baseball was the career kiss of death.

The current threshold is 130 at-bats; in all likelihood, he'll exceed that.

Pretty irrelevant, and I am sure he would rather be playing MLB than AAA to maintain eligibility for an award he may or may not win. Very rarely, even a couple of years in, is the ROY the best player from his class anymore. It matters a lot more in Basketball since it really gets the NBA marketing machine behind you, but MLB really lacks central marketing and doesn't really get behind players. I think Blake Griffin gets more exposure from his league than Albert Pujols (an all-time great in his sport) gets from his league.

The threshold is 130 plate appearances before September though. At this rate, if he continues being placed at the end of the lineup its quite conceivable he could have rookie eligibility next year.

I believe that it's 45 days prior to September 1st, or 130 at-bats overall:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/ab ... ations.jsp

Determining rookie status:
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).

The caveat involving the "period of 25-player limit" seems to apply only to the second portion.

Ah, my mistake. I think you are right.

Does a player winning awards like ROTY/MVP/Cy Young affect arbitration cases?
