Ottawa looking at aquiring Jays AA Team

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Tue Aug 16, 2011 11:20 pm

Negotiations are moving ahead very quickly on Ottawa obtaining a Double-A minor pro baseball franchise by either 2013 or 2014.

A large U.S. investment banking company representing a Double-A franchise met with city staff, College Councillor Rick Chiarelli, and representatives of Mayor Jim Watson’s office recently at Ottawa City Hall and Chiarelli said he was surprised and pleased with the progress made at the meeting.

Chiarelli said Watson is “cooperative in finding a suitable tenant” for the 10,000-seat Ottawa Stadium on Coventry Road.

Two serious local bidders with deep pockets are trying to land the Double-A franchise with one peripheral Ottawa bidder kicking tires on the proposal. Chiarelli declined to name the bidders or the investment banker for fear of jeopardizing negotiations.

The ownership of the franchise is still to be determined. One Toronto interest and a U.S. party have expressed interest in being majority owners of the new team, partnering with the local candidates. However, the local bidders might simply run the team alone, Chiarelli said, because they have substantial financial resources.

The parties to the negotiations recently attended an Ottawa Fat Cats game and were pleased to see large crowds at the semi-pro Intercounty Baseball League games. That bodes well for attendance at the much higher level Double A games. All parties have expressed interest in affiliating with the Toronto Blue Jays farm system.

The Jays are unable to comment on the negotiations for fear of breaking tampering rules though Chiarelli said Toronto officials are very aware of the superb facility in Ottawa. In the past, Blue Jay officials have said they are interested in the general concept of bringing minor-league baseball back to Canada and Ottawa has the best facility in Canada for that. Already, the Jays have moved their Single-A affiliation to Vancouver. Double A is the second highest level of minor league baseball and is the place where star prospects are nurtured for Major League Baseball careers.

“There is a high likelihood there will be a competitive offer to locate a team here and use the stadium,” Chiarelli said Monday.

Chiarelli expects the city will hold a competitive bidding process to use the stadium.

I hope this happens, the level of baseball the Fat Cats play is rather weak.

I played with a few of them growing up, Desclouds was drafted twice by the Dodgers. 47th and 48th round though.

We have a very nice baseball Stadium here in Edmonton, Telus Field, that I really hope gets minor ball back someday. There used to be a AAA team but Nolan Ryan bought it and moved it to Texas. We have an Independent team, but the quality is very poor. I went to see Canseco play this weekend for the nostalgia factor, but I would rather see prospects.

I like the Fisher Cats. There are usually good YouTube videos available for that team, it seems.

I think AA would be more appropriate for St Catharines, tbh.

Ah my dad used to take me to baby blue jays and later stompers games in st. Catharines. Got to see Delgado and Wells well before they were stars but unfortunately the team left for a reason, it's a stagnant market. I would rather see them putting teams in Alberta or maybe the east coast to help grass roots development instead of another team in Ontario.

I dunno. I think if one of the upstate NY teams could be poached to St Catharines, it might work. Probably tough with Buffalo having a minor league team just 30 minutes away though. Still, nice to dream...

I think a AA team is a better idea for this market than AAA. It's just not a baseball town. I think the attendance numbers, regardless of the level of baseball, will remain consistent. You have die-hards who'll watch any type of baseball. You have groups (ie, school kids, etc) and then you have a small walk up crowd.

I went to many games when the Lynx were the Orioles' AAA affiliate and the stadium was almost empty. The attendance was only a little bit better when they were the Expos' affiliate. I do think that if the AAA team was affiliated with the Jays, attendance would be a little better than with the Expos back in the day (fans aren't split), but I'm not sure how much better. I think the Jays affiliation but the fact that they're only looking at an AA team would probably result in similar attendance numbers to what was the case in the Expos days.

The only time I ever saw a significant crowd at the stadium was when AJ Burnett was making a rehab start here Back in his Blue Jays days). They advertised the crap out of it and the stadium was at least 2/3 full. It really enhanced the experience.

Ya Telus field is great. I'd love to see us get another minor league team.
