People just remember the times he got toasted playing against the top 1 or 2 WR and that sticks out. But IMO he's shown continuous improvement. The same cannot be said for Lee or Underwood.

I think we keep 10 total DB, and this is who I'd keep if it were up to me:

S:

Collins
Burnett
Peprah
Levine

DB

Williams
Woodson
Shields
House
Gordy
Bush (can also play S)

That looks right to me. I can't see us keeping only 3 safeties as DB suggested.

jimmybones wrote:Only problem is they seem to like/trust him and he seems to be their favorite after Shields. As a 5/6 CB/4th safety/ST utility guy I like him for his experience quite a bit. As a base corner he scares me. I'd love to see House snatch that spot, I just haven't heard anything to suggest he will.

I really don't think they look at him that way. Last year he started the season as more of a safety/ST player and possible #6 CB, but Underpants and Lee sucked so much that he had to move back to CB. This year, we took House in the 4th and I think they were hoping he would be the #4 with Bush/Lee/Underpants/Gordy, etc. battling for the 5/6.

Basically, Bush has generally just outplayed the guys that were supposed to beat him out or the guys ahead of him have been hurt all the time. He's had competition and and the only guys that have really bumped him down the depth chart over the last few years are Tramon and Shields despite all the competition we've had for those last 3 CB spots on a yearly basis.

Hope Neal is alright, I think we can curb the freaking out until we know more information.

Injury or no, I'd feel a lot better if we had another reliable DL. That said, I still feel great.

I know this isn't the best way to look at things.....but if Neal is out, i don't think it would be as big of a deal as it was last year.

Mainly because I expect the offense to be much better than it was in 2010. No more 13 point outputs vs Washington, or 7 vs Det, etc.

You call yourself a fan. Don't even know the score of every single game last year. :nonono:

No fapping for you.

We likely have enough bodies on the DL, the scare with Neal though is that he looks to be the only guy with pass rush ability on the line besides Raji.

Wilson.

Despite playing just 22.9% of the snaps, he ranked third on the D-line in pressures with 12.

Pretty ironic if he's only out a few days as I'm going through the same thing right now(minor difference I dont play for the Packers, whatev). I hurt my knee Thursday and was worried it would be serious but I rested over the weekend and it feels better now. Totally depends on the severity. Good thing is it sounds like they were just being really cautious. I heard him say on the radio that he could have gotten up and they told him to stay down.

I hope so, but in reading stories so far from camp, the reporters have said Wilson has been largely invisible and consistently losing in the one on ones with various offensive lineman.

Wilson has to have been the most disappointing player thus far given how good he looked towards the end of last season. It seems every other player has either stayed on par with where they were last year or improved in some capacity except him. Still very early, though. I'd like to hear some more about Lawrence Guy. The coaching staff hasn't said much about him. Thought he looked pretty decent in the Browns game.

No offense to you guys, but **** reporters. It is pointless to make any conclusions based on what they say. People should put a single grain of salt into what they say and instead they put an entire handful. Which reporter last year thought Zombo had no chance to make the roster while also thinking Obiozor was the best OLB prospect outside of Matthews?

There are other examples obviously, but when it comes to subjective judgments I basically give these guys no credence. I certainly appreciate the coverage, but I tend to completely ignore what they say beyond injuries and who is taking snaps with the 1st or 2nd team. Beyond that they don't provide much of anything, unless it is a story that has quotes from people that actually matter.

What are you talking about? All McGinn and Silverstein reported about Wilson was that he wasn't standing out at all in practice and that in charting the one on ones vs the DL/OL, they listed who have won and lost. Wilson he said has struggled badly in them. Unless you watched these practices and one on ones, what do you have to base that McGinn and Silverstein have been wrong about how Wilson has performed? Just a wild guess? Plus, both were very quick early on to say the opposite about how Cobb looked in camp. Should we have just dismissed the good things they said about Cobb because they supposedly know little about football?

As for guys like McGinn and Silverstein having no idea what they are talking about, i can recall numerous times over the years where they mentioned certain lesser know guys and rookies who looked good early in camp, and then those guys went on to become players, Shields being a prime example last year before he showed himself in games. They've also been right numerous times about when they thought some some draft picks looked bad in camp and those guys ended up becoming nothing. I still remember being nervous when McGinn reported early on that Jamal Reynolds couldn't beat barley any of the lineman in one on one battles.

McGinn is one of the most respected football beat writers out there and rightfully so. I respect Silverstein a lot also. Few football teams get better coverage than what Packer fans get from McGinn and Silverstein. Just because they don't quickly spot every single young kid who becomes something doesn't mean they aren't good at their jobs. Hell, professional GM's around the league with a bevy of scouts sit and watch film on players until their eyes bleed and still they make tons of mistakes. Release guys like Tramon Williams and many others who later become good to top notch players with other teams. So if you're expecting beat writers to spot each gem early in camp and almost never be wrong, you have some seriously unrealistic expectations. McGinn has also generally been very good about predicting before a year starts about how the team will do.

Plus, i don't ever see you throwing out these type of rants about how clueless McGinn and/or Silverstein are when they talk up players you like in camp. They say Wilson has struggled in camp and now they are idiots. Sorry Ayt, but while i respect you as a poster, not only will i generally take McGinn's and/or Silverstein's observations over yours, i'll definitely take their observations of what they are actually seeing in camp over someone who isn't even there watching. Neither guy has any reason to not just report what they see and if they say that Wilson has struggled badly in the one on ones with offensive lineman, i'm confident that it was obvious enough that they are right. Of course though, that doesn't mean once the games start, Wilson won't be productive.

I'll start my post the same way you did. What are you talking about?

Firstly, (even though it is your last paragraph) when have I ever made a huge deal about the subjective opinion of writers when it comes to the players I apparently like? I quote them when it comes to statistical data (like McGinn breaking down snaps, pressures, targets, etc.) at the end of the year. Incidentally, I love his work in that regard after the season is over. If they write a story that has quotes from MM, AR, Wood or whoever I may put some stock into that, but I don't put much of any stock into the opinions of the writers themselves. I appreciate the coverage. I think we have some of the best NFL coverage in the league. Still, these are just guys watching practice who really don't necessarily know what they are watching or what they are talking about after watching. I'd love to see some examples of me putting any stock into the subjective opinions of any Packer writers.

I trust myself a hell of a lot more in watching preseason games than I do their judgments on practice. I also read the comments coaches may have on certain players in practice. I watch the videos on Packers.com where coaches and players talk about how practice went that day. It is great that McGinn and others provide thoughts on practice, but I don't need them to interpret one on one battles between DL/LBs and OL in practice when there is a lot more going on than just "winning" the matchup. There could be all kinds of different things going on in those situations in terms of working on technique that they are completely oblivious to, and on top of that it is generally just a handful of reps.

You also get the occasional, "so and so dropped a pass." Whoopdie **** do. "Player X made a nice break on the ball" means nothing without context. "ILB Y had a nice TFL" Great. What was the play and why did it break down? Maybe an OL playing a new position simply **** up and it really wasn't anything special by the ILB.

Again, I appreciate the coverage, but the subjective opinions of these guys should be completely ignored, IMO. All we should care about are injuries and which guys are playing with which group. Beyond that, getting good quotes (in context) is also nice.
