I'm not worried about basic. I pledged in college, so I'm pretty keen on what to expect. And I'm expecting to get deployed at least once.

Wish I'd known you were joining up. I could have enthusiastically rec'd a Navy Intel assignment. You get to live in uptown New Orleans and don't have to get wet. It doesn't suck.

I try to limit my Louisiana visits to Lake Charles. :)

Hey guys, I'm looking at a job near the Texas Medical Center in Houston, so would you recommend any nice neighborhoods to look for an apartment/loft close to this area?

Any general pointers on what to look for in Houston would be great as well.

Thanks!

Not a Mavs fan but a Lakers fan, which might not help my case here. :D

Loft prices downtown have come back to reasonable levels. If your job doesn't require driving during the work day, you could commute on the Main street rail line. 10-12 minutes, tops.

Zip codes 77003, 77002, and maybe 77004

Thanks man and any pointers on how safe/unsafe is the downtown area?

I was also looking at some apartments near Upper Kirby/River Oaks, which seemed like a 3.5 mile drive from the med center.

I hear the Washington Ave area is young and trendy and I also like the proximity to memorial park for running/soccer/tennis etc.

1. Downtown's perfectly safe. The cops are everywhere. Have been for years. It does, however, get loud near Main Street on weekend nights.
2. Upper Kirby is too expensive for what you get.
3. If you want to live on the Washington corridor, your commute is going to be a pain and you'll be forced by the civic association to pop your collar and order bottle service. Your call.
4. Check out Montrose and the Museum District. Montrose has been voted one of the top 3 neighborhoods in the country by the 2 biggest urban planning org's in the country. It's where I live, so I'm biased. But the commute would be easy and if you're a food dork or an arts patron, you'll be in heaven. (Or if you're gay. Either/or.)

Yeah I've heard of Montrose and midtown being mentioned a lot when I was interviewing there and talking to people.

I'm not gay, neither am I into the arts scene a lot but I do like the food choices, walk-ability and as a single guy in mid 20s, good options in friends and women to mingle.

As a food dork, I confirm sorely missing the Montrose area (damned Katy).

Worse than the food and arts, I miss being within a 45 second jog of Rice, which is surrounded by beautiful foliage filled with women in bicycle shorts, some half decent architecture for the Houston area, and a treehouse in the middle of campus. Running at War Memorial doesn't compare.

I would also like to thank JordansBulls for providing some great content in the middle of this lockout.
And I'm gonna go take a nap now.

Would you guys recommend any good sources for apartment hunting near Montrose/Museum district? I checked craigslist and I find many postings by realtors with little to no information on location etc.

Two websites.

har.com

urbanliving.com

Start with har. Just tailor your search with whatever parameters you want.

I think I just assembled a great Christmas present.

http://catalog.sears.ca/wcsstore/MasterCatalog/images/catalog/Product_271/std_lang_all/26/_p/616_50826_P.jpg + http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/07/mariorc-20100731.jpg + http://img.alibaba.com/wsphoto/v1/502579822_1/3ch_3_5ch_rc_Udirc_U810A_fire_missile_infrared_remote_control_helicopter_gyro_for_iphone_ipod_ipad_Androld_i_helicopter.jpg_200x200.jpg

So the first has 12 feet of track + 2 dummy cars that race blindly around it + a giant stone bowser that shoots ping pong balls at the cars.
The second has two remote controlled cars that acquire one of the mario kart items to speed up or zap the other guy when they pass under the arches.
And the third is a missile launching RC Heli.

You can have up to four people on this mess, where two of them try to shoot the RC cars, one with the bowser, one with the helicopter, then two if them can run the RC cars, shooting at each other with the item they get every lap and trying to dodge the two dummy cars while dodging bullets from both bowser and the helicopter.
If it actually works, and (especially) the RC cars don't suck, it should be crazygonuts. The two RC's are small enough to be taken out by ANYTHING, just hopefully good enough that they can navigate the track successfully, ever. And in case of boredom, chase down the other players with the helicopter.

Am I the only one here that finds it interesting that the purchase of the Orlando Magic was facilitated by Amway?

I think that second story may be onto something...
