Time is now to make a super star offer

Post#1 » by eitanr » Fri Aug 19, 2011 4:23 pm

The Clipps have the following pieces they can potentially packagae in a huge trade:

Gordon, Aminu, Kaman's expiring, Minny pick

I feel pending on the star involved and his committment to signing an extension here, the time is now to make such a deal while this package is at an all time high.

To me Chris Paul is the ideal candidate since it is evident that he won't re-sign and may warrant a great deal long term for the club.

I would love for us to add a player of that caliber, but I wouldn't be that willing to give up both Gordon and the Minny pick. I'd do one or the other, or risk waiting until free-agency. The Minnesota pick is practically guaranteed to be a lottery pick in a deep draft. Other teams that acquire a player of Paul's class, typically will only be able to offer low value 1sts. Also, I'd include Bledsoe in the mix for trade pieces. If we ended up with Paul, then it would be easy to part with Bledsoe. The Hornets would also be in a position where receiving a young point guard with potential in return would be a must.

I wouldn't give away the house to get Paul. As Eitanr stated, Paul has one year left and probably won't resign w/ the Hornets, so why load up NO for no good reason?
If I was trading now; I would offer NO a combination of: Kaman/Williams/ & Minny's 1st pick. If NO somehow got David West to resign & then Trade him w/ Paul ( is that possible) I would give Minny 1st,Kaman,Williams & maybe even Urkel (Aminu.) Could you imagine a Starting 5 of:
PG = Paul / SG = Gordon / #3 = West / #4 = Blake /#5 = DeAndre, then we have Bledsoe &Ike coming off the bench. We could afford to keep both Draft picks from Georgia and see how they do. Plus, if you are
an NBA free agent, would you want to go to a team like this, even for less money?

I'm with you MK. I wouldn't include both Gordon and the Minny pick in a trade for Paul. If he is really that interested in joining us I'd rather we just wait to sign him. If we do wing up trading for him I would only accept if he agrees to re-sign.

I am also in the camp of including either Gordon or the Minny pick but not both in the same trade package. If there is no 2012 season, the lottery odds would likely be determined by either the 2010-11 standings or a team's total record compiled over the last 3 seasons, and Minnesota would have the best shot at the top pick in either case - 25%.

I think in the end of the day, maybe the following deal gets it done?

Kaman, Aminu, Foye, MIN 2012 1st
FOR
Paul, Okafor

I feel NOH can then deal Ariza for Amir Johnson, likely not re-sign David West and be okay.

I can't see David West being part of this deal though. He's not a 3....he's a 4 who would work best alongside a strong 5....not as a 3 with Griffin there.

The Clippers can probably still keep Gordon with Paul and truly have a strong core moving forward. The Hornets will not get a better deal than that one for Paul. Everybody wins!

I would offer Gordan,Williams,Foye,Aminu,Minny pick for DWill,Morrow and Petro. Clipps don't absorb any horrible salaries and maintain cap flexibility to sign somebody like Tayshawn Prince. Nucleus of Blake/DWill/DJ is solid with good veteran role players like Morrow/Prince/Kaman/Cook/Gomes and still have the very young Bledsoe/Thompkins and Leslie. DWill makes everybody better, Morrow helps replace Gordan's shooting from the two spot, though there is a huge drop off in everything else. That being said I wouldn't mind trading Gordan and the pick for this package.

Every day that passes I'm more convinced that I dont wanna trade for no superstar... we have a team of young players and good prospects, and gutting it to get one superstar would put us on win now mode. And we're not ready to win now, even if we get one of those "superstars".

We don't have veterans and/or role players to compete right away, what we have is young prospects progressing their games, some will pan out (most I believe) and a few might bust, but I'll take my chances with that.

If we get rid of EJ + the pick + one or two of the youngstas + one of Mo/Kaman, we will have a team of 2 superstars + a young and raw Deandre + scrubs. That's barely making the playoffs in the west for the next 3 or 4 years. Blake is not ready to dominate deep in the playoffs, neither are Gordon or Deandre, I say the best we can do is wait, and if we can sign one of those guys without losing half the team that's awesome, if we don't, we'll be better in 5 years than if we made the trade.

Do you even think by that time Paul or Deron will still be better players than EJ? cause that's what it might take for Blake, Deandre, Aminu, Bledsoe, etc. to be polished, experienced and ready to compete with the best in the playoffs.

I say we wait, I'm even willing to let Kaman expire unless we can get a good young player for him.
