Jets 2011 Preseason Thread

Post#1 » by zilby » Sun Aug 14, 2011 12:43 am

So, I figure since a select few of us are on this board at all, I'd make a preseason thread for all four weeks.

Week 1: NYJ @ HOU 8:00 PM Monday Aug 15th ESPN
Week 2: CIN @ NYJ 7:00 PM Sunday Aug 21st
Week 3: NYJ @ NYG 7:00 PM Saturday Aug 27th
Week 4: PHI @ NYJ 7:30 PM Thursday Sep 1st

For weeks 2, 3 and 4 there haven't been announced networks yet.

Nick Mangold is still nursing his neck injury and will not be taking the trip to Texas
Brandon Moore, while off the PUP list, has a little bit further to go before being cleared to play
Mark Brunell, who hurt his finger yesterday, will likely be out, giving more playing time to his back-up, Greg McElroy
As we already know, Plaxico Burress’ ankle remains “tweaked” and he will not play
Trevor Canfield is out with a knee injury
Brandon Long will not be playing due to an undisclosed issue

Early in and I'm excited for the season already.

Big sack, loss of 13! Gotta love the D.

I have to say the late picks by and large impressed me. McElroy really did a good job as a rookie. The O-Line has me worried a bit depth wise. The starters all played well imo, liked that Mason and Sanchez hooked up on multiple passes. Green did some work and showed explosiveness again. Kerley has serious potential in the return game. Wilkerson did well for his first experience with NFL quality players imo.

These new kickoff rules SUCK. It's game one and I already didn't like a good number of Schotty's calls. Still didn't close out in the red zone with the first team but it was only one opportunity (the lost yards in that Red Zone set of downs was a disappointment and worrisome for me though it's early). Those are my main negatives. I didn't pay close attention to Ducasse but when I did watch him, he seemed much improved. His potential showed a bit compared to last year when he looked like a complete bust. With time and experience, I have faith he'll be really good.

I thought Ducasse was absolutely awful. He looked lost and almost got McElroy killed a few times.

I know he's a project, but I have very little hope for him. There's inexperienced and then there's clueless.

Ducasse played perhaps the worst game of football that I've ever seen. That useless waste of skin got Turner's leg broken and got the QB creamed multiple times. If OL depth wasn't an issue, I'd cut him immediately.

Guys remember that he had no TC to help out with this. He's going to take time, I was more focused on when he did get position, how was he holding up...and he seems to have the strength to go head up. He'll need a lot more reps and practice to be a real option, but his potential is there. I didn't like that he floated to three different places on the line either, the kid is inexperienced and they're repositioning him multiple times...expect mistakes.

I was in the press box for this one.

Watching the pre-game warmups it was clear the Jets were playing a preseason game and the Texans thought it was a game to decide a playoff berth. The intensity was almost completely one-sided, except Sanchez, who was trying to fire guys up and showing a lot more vocal leadership than anyone has seen. Even Bart Scott was unusually quiet.

My Jets notes:
--losing Turner hurts (he's out 8-10 weeks). He played well in Mangold's absence and the Jets guys were talking him up how he's played at guard. He was going to be the #6 OL. Robby Felix is an interesting story (google him), really tough guy, but he was not up to Turner's level.

--Ducasse was on the hook for 4-5 of the sacks, plus Turner's injury. The debatable one was where the guy he whiffed on scared McElroy into the defender that the LG (Kroul?) missed. I know I'm on record for hating him pre-draft, but I say this will all honesty: I have never seen an offensive lineman slower to react off the snap than Vlad Ducasse. Certainly never have in the 7 years I've been working in/with the NFL. It's not just isolated incidents, it's every freaking snap where he is the last guy moving, plus he is a react-type blocker so it makes him at even more of a disadvantage.

--I am more a fan of Shonn Greene after watching last night. The Jets use a lot of slow-developing run plays and that is perfect for his patient, deliberate running style. He is a runner that absolutely needs the play to be well-blocked though.

--McElroy has a real weak arm. Other than that he wasn't bad considering he got hit more (16 times) than he did in a 5-game period last year at Bama.

--Kerley looked good both at returns and in the slot. The rest of the receving corps present was not very good. Holmes wasn't really trying (that's okay for 1st preseason game, he's earned it), Mason looked a step slower. The rest of the depth at WR would not make Houston's roster and the Texans aren't real deep there.

--Josh Mauga was all over the place, nice to see him learning to keep his feet clean.

--Your safeties have to learn to watch backs out of the backfield. Every time the Texans needed a conversion, they ran play action to the RB flaring out and the Jets covered it well just once.

--deep roster guy I liked: Ellis Lankster.

Big Vlad has a ways to go.....got Turner hurt, almost had Sanchez killed in the preseason game last season, had McEllroy take a few hits, id understand this guy has all the raw talent in the world but hes a big liability right now, especially if your going to play him with the first team offense, just too risky atm

was also disappointed with McKnight, who I like alot.....with the exception of the first run he wasnt that great, and he had linebackers storm right through him

didnt know it was possible for someone to have a softer arm than Chad had, but McElroy proved it :D he wasnt all that bad though, he shouldve had a TD pass in the end but someone dropped it (forgot who), that last play of the game was just wtffffff

Mcknight worries me...he has a play or two where he shows infinite potential and then he's mediocre the rest of the way. I have big doubts that he'll ever prove worthwhile. I agree that Vlad has a long way to go, but his potential is there. I think with experience he'll become a beast, he's HUGE.

Plax is making one helluva first impression. The D made some nice plays but also gave up a lot of first downs in that second quarter with some slip ups.

For as much crap I give the offensive playcalling, I really like that they trusted Sanchez to throw when the offense was backed up in their own endzone towards the end of the 1st half. Granted it was a preseason game against the Bengals and it was second down, but hopefully it carries on into the regular season.

I like what I saw from Plaxico today as well, but I'm still not ready to call him an amazing signing. I still want him to prove me wrong in the regular season.

Jennings will probably be this year's Woodhead. He'll be cut by the Jets since they have too many RBs and he'll be signed and beast for the Patriots. :(

I don't really want to comment too much mostly because how bad the Bengals have gotten and it is a preseason game, but I mostly like what I saw. I still think depth at both lines could be a problem this season, especially late in the season.

Totally agree. And the Maybin sighting had to be a pleasant surprise. Something about a blind squirrel and a nut...
