OT: 25 Things you didn't know this season

Post#1 » by mini » Fri Aug 26, 2011 12:47 am

A pretty interesting article and worth the read. Some Jays mentions as well as others...
2. Two players haven’t popped out this season.

Nearly 650 times, Los Angeles Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick(notes) has swung and made contact. Not one of those balls lingered in the air before settling into an infielder’s glove.

Texas superutilityman Michael Young(notes) is at more than 750 contacts without a popout.

4. Votto’s swing against fastballs is the single best weapon in baseball this year.

20. Six guys have hit every pitch well this season.

It’s no surprise Jose Bautista, Prince Fielder(notes), Miguel Cabrera(notes) and David Ortiz(notes) have positive Pitch Type Values against all the pitches they’ve faced. It’s a big surprise that Casey Kotchman(notes) and Yunel Escobar(notes) are the other two.

24. If Livan Hernandez(notes) keeps this up, his pitches are going to set time in reverse soon.

In the non-Wakefield-starters division, here is where Livan’s pitches rank:

Fastball: Slowest (83.8 mph)
Curveball: Slowest (66.3 mph)
Slider: Fifth slowest (78.9 mph; Arroyo, at 75.2 mph, is the champ)
Changeup: Sixth slowest (77.5 mph; Barry Zito(notes), at 74.4 mph, is the champ)

Nice find! As an interesting Jays stat to add....

Morrow has gotten zero GDP (grounded into double plays) so far this year

Wow, Votto mashes fastballs. I think I remember him complaining about pitchers throwing him a lot of breaking balls earlier in the season when he was "slumping", but I wouldn't blame him after seeing the linear weights (flawed or not). It looks like he sees a regular amount of fastballs to me, though.

That guy in front of Bautista would be fun.

27. Carlos Beltran has the best stolen base percentage in MLB history.

292 career steals. Caught only 39 times!

Over a 4 year period beginning in 2001...Beltran stole 149 bases and was caught just 15 times!

Honourable mention to Eric Davis: 349 career steals. Caught only 66 times

28. Billy Wagner was born a right-handed pitcher

He broke his right arm (twice) when he was young...and began throwing with his "off" arm

Considering he's the all-time MLB career leader with 12 K's per 9 innings...I think this ranks among the greatest accomplishments in sports history

And this is just sick...

Wagner also set single-season NCAA records for strikeouts per nine innings, with 19⅓ in 1992, and fewest hits allowed per nine innings, with 1.88.
