Rank Center Acquisitions: VOTE

Post#1 » by shrink » Mon Aug 29, 2011 11:05 pm

Let's do another one of those polls.

This isn't about the best center, but the one who would be the best addition to our team (assume Adelman). Include whatever factors you want - production, salary, age, etc.

I'll get #1 out of the way, and start the voting on #2:

1. Dwight Howard
2. Andrew Bogut (1)

I'll never understand the love for big plodding centers on this board.

Do people like Gasol and Bogut so much, because they're the closest thing to a young Brad Miller and the desire is to replicate the Adelman Kings?

You may be confusing "plodding" with "white." Granted, Gasol looks a little like Greg Ostertag, but thats about where the comparison ends, he's pretty skilled offensively and actually uses that size to his advantage. For Bogut, assuming he doesn't come back still hurt, there aren't a lot of guys not named Dwight who are better than him.

This says a lot more about the state of centres in this league than how good Bogut actually is.

I despise Horford with a passion... A powerfoward beating out Bogut in allstar votes year after year, smh. Thus for me its Marc Gasol.

What makes Horford a better fit than Bogut? Defensively Bogut is in a different stratosphere compared to any other C in the league not named Howard, and even that could be up for debate when Bogut's at his very best. He's anything but plodding.

Gasol may not be the be the best defensive center around, but he's a beast in the paint and certainly much more capable of masking Love's limitations than Horford would be. Horford will never be able to anchor a high level contending defense (at least with Love as the PF playing alongside him).

Horford is a great player and I'd be all for the acquisition if that was the best the Wolves could do, but a ceiling of Bogut/Gasol at C alongside Love is going to be much higher than it'd be with Horford.

That's not true at all.

That's not true at all either. If you think Gasol is an "anchor" you're mistaken. His limitations are the same as Love's only he is the better post-defender, which is normally what we see as Love's defensive "strength". If you want a player to mask Love's limitations, you need a player that is going to be able be quicker with defensive help. In my mind, that's Noah, Verajao, Chandler, Horford.

Any insight to back this up at all? I'd argue Horford is already the better player, is two years younger than those other two guys (hasn't peaked), and has no injury history.
