Texas A&M might be starting the new 2012 conference shuffle
Looks like this rumor has a lot of legs.
SEC grabs the Aggies, and possibly FSU/Clemson.
The conferences we've all known for quite a while may change significantly in the near future.
Is it better? IDK, but I have a great fear of the 4 16-team super conferences becoming a reality.

they are staying for now, but there seems to be a lot of built up tension out there and everyone is just waiting for something to break
i read something that said super-conferences were going to be the future of college football

There's been scuttlebutt for a couple of years now about 4 16-team super conferences.
I hope that never happens.....

Texas is the pin in the grenade.
Let's say Texas realizes the Big 12 is no longer viable without TAMU and Mizzou, which is most likely the other team to go SEC (the SEC wants the St. Louis TV market).
Does Texas join the Big Ten or the Pac-12? Or do they cobble together a conference with Oklahoma, Okie State, and Kansas and sort of fold into the Big East including Notre Dame?
Some current BCS teams are going to get left out. My guesses: Vandy, Iowa State, Duke, Baylor, Wake Forest, maybe Northwestern.

that would surprise me, i would think that the big ten's are pretty safe, the only way one would be out is if they needed room for a big team coming in (notre dame) but it would be better to add another team i would think
and how much pressure would there be on notre dame to join one of the super conferences? they have a really good deal on their own right now

Well...they won't be in the big 12:

Texas A&M dealt a blow to the Big 12 Conference Wednesday, saying it plans to leave by July 2012 if it is accepted by the SEC or another league.
The move, which had been expected, may set off another round of conference realignments in college sports. The Aggies have made it clear they want to join the 12-member Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 said again after the announcement that it will move swiftly to find at least one replacement for the Aggies.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Big 12 conference/members react legally to this in the way of damages.
As for adding new members.....who knows

They will add one member that's for sure. They might as well go for 3 more to get some more revenue from a championship game. I also think that the SEC adds one more, probably an ACC team. That could cause the ACC to replace a team, likely from the Big East, then they would need a new team since they'd be down to 8.
To Big-12: BYU, SMU, and one of the following 3- Houston, Louisville, New Mexico
It depends if Texas is willing to let in 2 Texas schools. Then the league is left with Basketball schools me thinks as Arkansas and Notre Dame aren't coming.
To the SEC: VA Tech
To the ACC: Rutgers
To the Big East: Central Florida
That's my take.

Some Big12 homers are pretty butthurt over this. They're claiming A&M made a mistake, but this is clearly a good move.
SoS will help build their football program better than sitting in the Big12. Texas athletes that want to compete in the premier conference will go to A&M, and facing better competition should elevate their football program over Texas'.
I don't see the SEC grabbing an ACC team though. FSU is unnecessary, and could possibly muff the Canes-Noles rivalry, which is just as big as the Gators-Noles rivalry. Grabbing the Hokies would be cool, and a win for both VT and the SEC, but I don't see the SEC commish wanting to ruffle those feathers. Why not dismantle the Big LEast or the remnants of the Big12?
I'd offer OU, TCU and WVU bids. Boise would be great, but they are way out of the southeast. I don't care much for Mizzou. It should be an interesting shakeup regardless. PEACE.

didn't BYU just go independent this year? would they want to jump back into a conference so quickly?

Re: Texas A&M might be starting the new 2012 conference shuf
According to reports TAMU will lose about $6M per year on the TV deal. Just what public colleges should be doing, making bad business deals for the sake of their slightly above-average football program
Most intelligent guess I've heard from the hours of relentless media coverage here in Houston:
--SEC adds North Carolina to get to 14, then adds UVA and VT in a couple of years to get to 16
--Big 12 adds BYU, TCU, and Houston to get back to 12, then eventually poaches Boise and Air Force to get to 14, then gets Louisville and SMU to get to 16
--Big Ten adds Notre Dame and Syracuse to get to 14, eventually adds Georgia Tech and Cincinnati when the others get to 16
--What's left of the ACC and Big East merges, Wake and Duke drop down to FCS, and they add ECU, USM, Memphis, and UCF.
--PAC 12 adds Fresno, SDSU, Colorado State, and Nevada to get to 16
These conferences would only exist in football, there would be different ones for all the other sports that are more geographically tight.
I think I got that all correct. It was some dude from Rivals.com on Yahoo radio yesterday.
The only thing I see crazy about that is that it is 5 16-team conferences. How do you run a playoff with 80?

The Pac-12 will never add Cal-State schools. They will only accept large research universities. If they wanted to expand they would look to Kansas and Missouri. If they are taking SDSU why would they take Nevada over UNLV?

They only did that because they were butt hurt that their rival moved on to better things. They wanted their own TV deal and use their own network, which in the Big-12 seems to be ok.

I think the Pac 12 should expand to the Pac 16. Do this by adding Texas and Oklahoma, along with two other teams (amongst possibly Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma St, etc...)
Then, for tradition's sake, make one division the old Pac 8, and the other all the rest:
Western Division
Washington
Washington State
Oregon
Oregon State
California
Stanford
UCLA
USC
Eastern Division
Arizona
Arizona State
Utah
Colorado
Texas
Texas Tech
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
That would be the makings of a great super-conference. In football, each team would play all the teams in their own division plus two teams from the other division for a total of 9 games, leaving 3 games for out of conference. Then, of course, a conference title game.
This would move us a lot closer to a true college football playoff.

Rumbling of Mizzzou wanting out the BIG12 also. Big12 is a dying conference. I cant see them adding any more teams with OU/Mizzou likely on the way out.
If that happens then Texas is SOL, which conference will want them with their LHN? IMO, its either abandon the LHN and beg for the Pac 10 or SEC or go independent. Either way, Texas seems to have made a huge error in judgment with the LHN.

I don't know where these Big 12 teams expect to go. I dont think 16 team conferences are iminant and losing their TV deal is suicide.
