for those of you who have gone to (or are in now) graduate school: how did you choose which schools to apply to? and how many did you apply to?

I listed up the schools that fit my specialization and applied to schools with low cost of living and good funding opportunities, which means less time trying to find a bar-tending/serving job and more time to spend on actual academic work. I took the school that offered me the best chance of a scholarship/stipend.

I applied to 6 I guess.

University of Missouri - Admitted with possibility of stipend
University of Tennessee - Admitted but no possibility of stipend
Notre Dame - Admitted
University of Florida - They lost my application and informed me on deadline day
University of Cincinnati - Admitted to a non-thesis Engineering program
University of Southern California - Admitted but I couldn't afford this even with stipends

There's a professor at Auburn and he's like the best in chip design verification and I'm pretty sure every professor around the world steals slides from his lecture notes to teach that course.

Long story short, it happens very frequently and be thankful that he's pointing you to a good source rather than confuse you with his half baked knowledge.

thanks slava

i know that grad programs can be competitive so its good to have a few options, and i met with a couple professors and they both gave me different numbers as far as how many i should apply to (one said 3 and the other said 8)

A lot obviously depends on your location preferences. I know people from the midwest that wouldn't go anywhere near the coasts and vice versa. For me, coming in from another country, I could grow to like any place in a first world country.

For example my apartment never had an A/C before I moved to the US.

Anyways narrow down your options and look at the universities and programs you could see yourself doing and apply for anything you think you do not want to miss out on. Also inquire about the grading culture, teaching assistance-ships etc before you make a decision.

Grad school can be miserable if yo make the wrong choice and end up being understudy to an ass hat.

I suppose your GRE scores also determine a lot on what you can shoot for.

First time watching WNBA game. Are Seattle and LA actually decent teams? It looks slow as hell, but pretty good basketball.

EDIT: Nevermind, just a rare two minute stretch. The other ten have been bricks and all the players yapping. Chicks argue WAAAYYY more in the WNBA, than their male counterparts in the NBA. And it's much more annoying too.

The WNBA is doomed.

Women in general tend to argue more.

There's a sport rally tonight for the kickoff of fall 2011 sports.

First football game this Saturday too. Too bad I won't be able to go that.

I normally bought books from abebooks.com (not digital). They have some library copies and used stuff for dirt cheap prices.

Yeah I know, but I'm thinking about buying a kindle, and wanted to use it for school books as well.
