Giants designate Tejada, Rowand for assignment

SAN FRANCISCO -- With his club falling further out of playoff contention by the day, Giants general manager Brian Sabean started making sweeping changes Wednesday.

Outfielder Aaron Rowand and infielder Miguel Tejada were designated for assignment by the defending World Series champions, who began the day trailing first-place Arizona by a season-high six games in the NL West race.

"We're at a spot in the season where we have to do some damage control with the roster. A couple things played into it. In both cases, there was diminished playing time, diminished roles," Sabean said. "If this stays ugly, we've got to turn the page, look at some other people and get ready for next year, and try to win and develop at the same time."

I know these guys haven't exactly played up to the standard that Sabean wants them to, but is he throwing up the white flag a bit too soon?

Yeah, Tejada sucked last year with the Os but Sabean gave him a $6.5 million contract? And the Rowand contract was a disaster from the get go. No wonder they can't score, they're signing the wrong guys.

So far as I can figure out Brian Sabean's mindset, he probably thinks he can go acquire some magic playoff beans for a PTBNL, feed them to a couple minor leaguers, and save his season. BBRef's version of WAR thinks both Tejada and Rowand have been marginally better than replacement level players, so he might have been better off hoping one or both of them gets on a hot streak. But it's hard to say one way or another.

I think Sabean would've been better off letting Tejada walk after the season and then quietly DFAing Rowand while there's a sea of transactions going on in the early winter. No reason to call attention to your personal failures as a GM when you don't need to.

Ehh, Sabean has always been suck; last year's success happened cause of the signings and trades that year, but the Giants were pretty lucky for most of them. Ross and Huff have been awful this year.

Anyway, I love that Tejada and Rowand have been DFA'd cause **** them. Sure, now it'll cost $16.5 million to have a rookie scrub on the team as opposed to $16 million for Rowand, but IDGAF. He's off the team and I like it.

Exactly. Tejada was a mistake from the beginning, and frankly, should have been off this team a long time ago.
