2013 Free Agency

Post#1 » by countrybama24 » Sun Aug 28, 2011 6:27 pm

We'll have almost nobody on non-rookie contracts.

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_freeagents/2013/

Who'd you like outside of the obvious Dwight, Deron, Chris Paul options? Restricted FAs are tough, but we'd have enough cash to really overpay for one. Keep Paul Millsap and build around the rookies? Maybe this means we should take on salary for draft picks if we aren't likely to find a real impact player in free agency?

Long ways off.... but this lock out is torture.

The Jazz should make a run at Deron.

Seriously.

Deron, CP and Dwight will all likely be FAs after this season if they are going to leave their current destinations.

However, with Memo's deal coming off the books, if we can off load Jefferson for an expiring and a quality asset or two, then we'll be far enough below the cap to offer a max deal. If we are in that position, I think you go hard after Deron. If we could get him and at least two of the young guys we have develop to their full potential, we will have a championship caliber squad. Damn.

It's really a shame that Deron and CP3 will most likely be free agents next offseason rather than in two or three years. Especially if the lockout wipes out the entire season, it's extremely unlikely that our young guys will have shown enough by next summer to convince one of those guys they could compete for a championship in Utah. That being said, I think erudite's right on the money in suggesting that pairing Deron (or CP3) with all, or even a couple, of our young guys at or near full potential could make for a pretty awesome team. Unfortunately, like most 21-and under NBA players, all of our young guys have a ways to go. In two or three years, they might have made enough progress towards reaching their full potential to at least make a player of Deron or CP3's caliber consider coming here (actually convincing one of them to come to Utah would be another matter entirely), but, again, I don't see that happening by next summer.

Other guys from that list who stood out as potential targets (ignoring whether or not they'd actually come here) in my mind include, but are not limited to, Taj Gibson (phenomenal backup who would substantially improve our interior defense and could play with either Favors and Kanter); Dorell Wright (even if Hayward and Burks reach their full potential, I feel like we need somebody on the wing who can shoot and defend) and Mo Williams (he might be a little old by then, but, if he's still capable of playing near the level he did for the Cavs by then, he could be a good fit; with two wings who both need the ball in their hands to reach their full effectiveness, a point guard--whether it's Mo or somebody younger who fits the same mold-- who's proven that he can be effective off the ball would be a nice thing to have).

Prokhorov might have someone assassinated. But worth the risk for Deron + our current core lol. We clearly should talk to Deron like we should with any of the free agents, but he at least likes it here. This is why i'd be down to dump salary (namely al and devin) this season so we have space for the opt outs AND a higher draft pick in 2012.

It's really not all that unreasonable that we get Deron back. I think he likes the area, so that's a plus.

I think the only way he does it is if we're that close to being contenders. If Hayward, Favors, Kanter and Burks develop towards their potential, I can see Dwill being intrigued.

I've seen that movie all ready.

Sign me up for some CP though.

Honestly, I think our cap space comes one year too late for any of those 3. Unless I'm mistaken we get our cap space in the summer after Dwight, Deron, and CP3. I don't really know which big names will be there for our off season. But, it likely matters little. We'll have a raft of our own young talent that we'll need to set aside money for extentions. Plus getting a big name free agent to come here is something of a pipe dream. Yeah, it might happen, it's just not terribly likely.

What happens will likely hinge on the new CBA. I have a feeling player and salary dynamics as we know them are a thing of the past. But, being in the Jazz situation moving forward is a very good place to be no matter what happens.

Deron, CP3 and Dwight all have player options for next season (2012-2013). And unless the new CBA raises the salary structure (which is highly improbable, imo), I see those three marquee guys opting in. 17M is still 17M (19M in Dwight's case). I don't see them earning more in the new CBA.

When that happens, Utah is in a great position financially when free agency comes in 2013.

Will D-Will be enticed to forget that hurtful trade with a core of Hayward, Favors, Kanter, Burks and next year's pick/s? I don't think so. In two years, that core won't be significantly better than a line-up featuring Boozer, Memo, AK, Brew and Millsap. Deron can't afford to pin his hopes on a developing squad. That's my opinion.

I highly doubt Deron would ever consider coming back here after we traded him (he isn't the forgiving type) but I'm still up for making a run at him in FA just for the fun of it. It sure would make things interesting.

Other players...

I'm still a big Brewer fan so if Burks doesn't turn out I wouldn't be opposed to getting him as a backup 2. He is just a good glue guy who plays hard on the D end and knows how to be a good teammate.

Kevin Martin would be pretty sweet to land but he would want to get over paid for what he would be worth at that time so I doubt that happens.

I would say Brandon Bass but we just won't need him at that point.

Udrih and Farmar would be solid backup pg's or at least serviceable starters. I hate Farmar though...

I think Dwight all ready said he's opting out.

I'm expecting Deron and Chris to follow Dwight's lead as well.

In all seriousness it's going to depend on what the new CBA looks like.

Deron wont be back, he'll be too butt hurt over the trade. Dwight will go where one of these 2 go though I think thats a forgone conclusion.
