Draft Strategy for 10th/11th pick?

Post#1 » by aaa » Sat Sep 3, 2011 7:36 am

So I have the 10th pick in a non-ppr, standard scoring 10 team league, with a QB/WR/WR/FLX/RB/RB/TE roster. I've always espoused the idea of taking the best available RBs with my first two picks, but the thing is I really don't like any of the RBs that will be available at 10 and 11.

Mendenhall, Gore, MJD, Turner, and McFadden will probably all be there, but I dont like any of them. I'm opposed to using the 10 or 11 on any of them because i'd much rather have a couple high upside RB2's like Blount, Bradshaw, or Felix Jones at 30/31 than use my first and second rounders on a RB that I dont believe in. I really don't want to take a RB at 10/11, and that goes directly against my general philosophy, so obviously it's tough for me to brainstorm a strategy going into this year's draft.

If I'm not going RB/RB with the 10/11, what would you guys recommend? Obviously it will depend a lot on who I'm targeting at at 30/31, but I'm curious who your targets would be for the 10/11 and 30/31 picks assuming no RBs with the 10/11.

I was hoping for something like this:

10/11- Roddy White and Andre Johnson (He will probably fall in my league, we use NFL.com rankings and I'm playing with a couple newbs)
30/31- LaGarette Blount and Felix Jones/Ahmad Bradshaw/Beanie Wells
50/51- Roethlisberger and Mario Manningham/Anquan Boldin/TIm Hightower
70/71- BenJarvus G-E/Marshawn Lynch

OR

10/11- Roddy and Andre J
30/31- Blount and Felix Jones/Ahmad Bradshaw/Beanie Wells
50/51- Hightower/Ingram/Bush/Manningham
70/71- Josh Freeman/benJarvus

So obviously it looks like I want to go WR/WR, but I will take Vick or Rodgers if they fall (they probably won't). I've never done WR/WR with my first two, so this is new territory for me. I just wanted to get a little more feedback from fantasy freaks like yourselves before I commit to it.

What are your thoughts on 10/11/30/31? What guys would you target with 10/11 assuming I go after RBs with 30/31? Should I go QB/WR instead of WR/WR even if Rodgers or Vick don't fall? And if you really really really think I should take an RB at 10/11, which one (or two) would they be?

Thanks for your help. Again, we use NFL.com rankings and a couple guys are new to the game, so Im confident that the guys listed above will fall to those positions. These are the default rankings:

I know a lot of people like to go WR/WR in this spot, but I would probably go WR/RB, something like White/Turner. If you're feeling ballsy, go with Gore. If he stays healthy, he'll be the better back imo. Big if, though.

But you need to get at least one of the top 15 backs, and I don't think going WR/WR allows you to do that. The perfect time to go WR back to back is rounds 2 and 3, when you had an early first round pick.

Agreed with the above poster but I'd go Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson before Roddy White.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Is it really a good idea to pair Turner and White? I'd be relying heavily on the falcons. And I think Roddy is the top WR this year, he's got the easiest schedule in terms of fantasy points allowed to WRs by a long shot.

Also what are your thoughts on the rbs available at 30/31?

First off, I wouldn't let being on the same team stray me from taking a highly rated player, especially if he was clearly the best available. But if you were worried about it, you potentially grab Gore or Mendenhall (or pray that MJD fell to you), rather than Turner.

And as the poster above mentioned, Calvin and Andre Johnson are every bit the prospects, if not better, than White. All three of them, barring injury, will finish in the top 10 WRs at the end of the year, and probably be top 5.

Secondly, I think pairing a RB/WR from the same team is not nearly as risky as pairing a QB/WR from the same team. But once again, I personally would be more focused on getting the best talent than on avoiding players from the same team. There's going to be ups and downs throughout the season, regardless of what players you have and who they play for. The idea is that over the long run, these top guys will produce for you. Unfortunately, there's no risk free method for fantasy football, though.

Also what are your thoughts on the rbs available at 30/31?

Based on ESPN's rankings, Forte and Bradshaw seem to be the best available. Then you have guys like Best, Felix Jones, and Blount among others. I also think Benson offers excellent value this year, as well as Fred Jackson. Not sexy, but very solid. I tend to shy away from Moreno, DWilliams, and Ryan Matthews myself, but I suppose that could just be personal bias.

This group ranges from high-end #2s to low-end #2s/high-end #3s.

If you go WR/WR with your first 2, I'd be drafting RBs with at least your next 3
You'll probably miss on Matt Forte, but could get 2 of Bradshaw, Felix Jones, Blount...etc.
By the time your 5 round pick rolls around, you're talking about guys like Cedric Benson, Ryan Matthews Joesph Addai, & Ryan Grant

You don't have to worry about drafting another WR until probably at least round 7 if you start WR/WR because you're probably not going to bench those 2 unless their injured (except for bye weeks)

Personally, I still like getting at least 1 RB in the first two rounds, RB seems to drop a lot faster than WR in my mind. Since it's non-PPR, a guy like Michael Turner would still be a valuable 2nd round guy to pick up.

You can still get quality WR's in rounds 3 & 4 that aren't that far back from the guys in the first 2 rounds, can't really say that with RB. I was in a 10 team league, took RB's with my first 2 picks and was able to get Mike Wallace in round 3. Wallace probably won't be very far behind the likes of Calvin Johnson and Hakeem Nicks.

ESPN had a nice breakdown about how many projected top 20 WRs actually finish in the top 20 each year. The answer is something like half. On one hand, this might suggest you should go WR/WR to lock in two studs. My feeling is actually that you should go best WR/RB at each turn, maybe even RB/RB at the second turn, because there's a much greater chance that a WR you draft in the 6th round or later turns into a stud than a RB blows up taken in the same round.

I agree with this. I have the 11th pick in a draft tonight (12 team) and I plan on going RB/WR then RB/RB then WR/RB/QB depending on who's available on the 5/6 turn.

WR is the toughest position to fill off the waiver wire for the most part.

I don't think you should necessarily start taking suspect maybe guys in the 3rd and 4th, but RB is the easiest position to fill as long as you pick up the backups available when there's injuries.

RB's are almost like defenses in a sense once you're a few weeks in if you're thin at the position.

The same as you shouldn't necessarily reach on a WR in the 4th round solely because they were top 20 the year before, you shouldn't waste earlier picks on the Cedric Benson's of the world or a committee back like BenJarvis or Ryan Grant.

I think heading into the draft with a strategy is of course a good idea and obvious none the less, but your draft should be based on how it's going and specific players available, not sticking to a game plan what players are on board be damned.

I also think if you shouldn't forget about QB.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate them all. This is what I ended up with, and I am very happy. For not taking a RB at 10/11, I think I did pretty well for myself, lots of high upside guys and great values. And for the record, I only drafted Ricky Williams for my team name ;)

Ricky Willy's Best Blount

QB Tony Romo
RB Jahvid Best
RB LeGarrette Blount
W/R Shonn Greene
WR Roddy White
WR Andre Johnson
TE Rob Gronkowski

BN QB Kevin Kolb
BN RB Reggie Bush
BN RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis
BN RB James Starks
BN RB Ricky Williams
BN WR Mario Manningham

I'll probably need a new TE, but I have the #1 waiver position so I don't want to waste that if someone explodes in week 1 or 2. Romo fell to the 5th round for me, so that was a blessing, and NFL.com rated Green-Ellis far too low IMO at 75ish.
