bballref has 185 guys listed as 6'8" or taller who played Center from the beginning of the league until 1979. That's a lot considering there were only a fraction of the teams in today's league.

6'8" is still undersized. I'd say anything under 6'10" is for Center. And even if the number is high, I don't really have much reference to give to that mentally. How many centers were there? Minutes? Etc. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I can't know from that stat.

SWEDD523 wrote:
I think Dwight's scoring numbers speak for themselves.

Doesn't change the fact that he has 0 post or counter moves.

That's not true anymore, and it was an exaggeration before.
SWEDD523 wrote:
And most the big guys won't pan out :/

For reasons that I've mentioned

Eh?
SWEDD523 wrote:
The big guys who overpower the others get the attention. If you end up 6'7" (small forward size) you were probably one of the tallest kids through grade school and HS and all that.

1. You're confusing attention with development
2. With the way people are growing so much at younger ages, 6'7 doesn't make you a Center anymore. Just go look at the college recruiting numbers over the last few years

Attention from the coaching staff is how you develop.

Mostly because height and skill don't correlate.

*Not anymore. You can name many more big men from the past generation who were supremely skilled in the post. Nowadays you have.... Al Jefferson? Zbo? Scola? Fact of the matter is we're living in an era where any big man with a baby hook is lauded for his post moves while guys like McHale would laugh them off the court[/quote]
Pau. Dirk. More than you'd expect. But less than there used to be. I posit that it's because they weren't so huge before, and post defense has improved. Though if you look at the percentages, they were low. Many reasons why though.
SWEDD523 wrote:
Very unskilled little guys are just as common, they just don't get on television.

I'm glad you agree that unskilled big men are still a commodity while small guys are forced to work on skills for fear of not having a chance. Size and athleticism trumps skill in today's league.

Which is why bigs are still more valuable.

I'll just reiterate what I originally said: The bigs seem bigger and less skilled now than they did in the black and white days.

Criminally underrated player. Only guard to be named The Defensive Player of the Year TWICE. Five All-NBA teams, always gave 100% effort. Perfect player for my team.

lamar you had to know this pick would break my heart, right? moncrief is so underrated historically. hell, he was underrated when he was in his prime. i really wanted him to come off my bench behind thompson and oscar. damn you.

for those that dont remember much about moncrief, here's how i would describe him... he was a better tony allen on defense and on offense he was a slightly worse wade.

Lamar, while I was reading the whining about Dumars being taken and not having a high level defensive player, the little voice in my head was screaming, "Moncrief!!!, Sidney **** Moncrief!!"

And you picked him. Great selection!

I almost took King and played the 6'6" Dr. J at SG, but I figured Dumars would be better after some deliberation.

i hate all of you. but, man i loved bernard king.

it totally sucks that back then when you blew out your knee it meant you were basically done. nowadays guys are back in 10 months looking like nothing ever happened.

even on one leg king came back and averaged 28ppg in 1991 at 34 years old. but king in 1985 was a **** monster. i love that game they always show on nbatv when he scores like 60.

I wasn't shocked that he was on the board. This is about the right time for him to be picked I think. The only surprising picks have been people reaching and getting picked early.

I actually thought that the Alex English pick would break your heart.

The worst part was the 5mins when I thought that I have spent all the categories he's on. I honestly didn't think he would ever be on the All-NBA 1st team.

Slam!!! I didn't think anyone would go after Webber! He would have been perfect in my team as a passing, running power forward.

I will take the ultimate team man and role player Wes Unseld for glass cleaning.

NBA Champion (1978)
NBA Most Valuable Player (1969)
NBA Finals MVP (1978)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1969)
5× NBA All-Star (1968, 1970–1972, 1974)
All-NBA First Team (1969)

Top 20 player All-Time lasted this long? You bet I'll scoop him up and put him in my Glass Cleaner category

1954-55 NBA Rookie of the Year
11 straight All-Star appearances (4 time MVP)
10 straight First Team All-NBA
1 time Second Team All-NBA
2 time league MVP (first ever recipient)
NBA Champion (1958)

First NBA player to reach 20,000 points
ONLY player to average more than 20 ppg his entire career
Third All-Time in rebounding (16.2)
Creator of the modern day Power Forward position
Oh yeah, and he hung 50 on Bill Russell's head in game 6 of the 1958 Finals

Bob Pettit

Best season: 31 points, 19 rebounds. Yes, you read that correctly.

I was pretty sure Bob Petit was taken. Did you use Find or did you manually look?

EDIT: Just double checked. Why did I think he had been picked? Weird.

Unless somebody edited their post way after I saw it, Pettit was available. I've been watchinig him the entire time after picking Ewing hoping he'd make it back to me. It's damn near criminal he lasted so long.

Yeah I guess when I passed him up, I started thinking about it and just remembered it as someone else having picked him?

i almost took petitt a while back and then i read the part in the simmons book about how he was a racist redneck and i figured that he and oscar might actually kill each other on a team flight. but on your team, he can hand out with rick barry and all is well. haha.
