Marc's entire family lives in Memphis and has since 2001 when Pau was drafted into the NBA. Marc grew up in Memphis, his mom and dad both work for St.Jude children's cancer research hospital (the Gasol brothers come from a family of doctors and were never poor or anything) and his younger brother Adria plays ball at the very same high school Marc won Mr Tennessee basketball player of the year several years ago(except he doesn't really like basketball).
Why would Marc not want to take a matched offer from Memphis?
Plus, Memphis was very fair in trading Pau into the right situation when Pau asked to be traded and would be just as fair to Marc.
There's a lot more than most people realize that ties Marc and Memphis together and the playoff run didn't hurt either.
Not trying to dash hopes, just giving a different perspective.

No problem commadoor. We faced the same thing when the national media was telling us Rubio would never play in MIN.
I agree with you that Marc would be likely to take any offer MEM would match. MEM fans say their front office would match any offer. They could certainly be right.
For me, I think that a micro-market like MEM just can't keep throwing money out there like they are the Lakers. For example, in 2008 LAL would clear $1.96 mil in revenue every game (1st) - MEM cleared $322,000 (30th). A brush with the play-offs last year doesn't dramatically change what they can charge, or even greatly alter attendance (MEM was 27th at home last year, 29th overall).
Now, despite what the organization may say, those are the economics, and they suggest that MEM may not match another big contract, and be open to a sign-and-trade. However, I could be 100% wrong. I think there is no harder front office to predict than the Grizzlies.

The other thing is that the Memphis FO wouldn't be naive enough not to take a gander towards the future and see Gay and Randolph making a ton of combined money. Assuming Gasol gets a decent contract (let's say 12 mil base that increases every year?) they would probably end up with 3/4 of their cap tied into their starting front court.

Good points.
I knew Rubio would come over, it was just a matter of working around that ridiculous DKV contract he was already under. I was just sick that the Grizz didn't take him at #2 and wasted that pick.
And you couldn't be more right in predicting what the Grizz owner will do, while very rich, he's very peculiar, especially with money.

..and to his credit, when I've critcized some of his moves (Zach Randolph, for example), many of them turned out.

The strange thing about the ZBo move is that he's wanted ZBo for a long time and even tried to get him by trading for him while still in Portland. I can't find the story on it right now but I remember it.

How about this instead?
MIN In: Andrew Bogut, Stephen Jackson
MIN Out: Michael Beasley, Darko Milicic, Wesley Johnson, Anthony Randolph, Utah's draft pick (protected)
Is that enough?

Re: M.Gasol to MN?
Memphis 1st
Utah 1st
(second rounders)?
Pekovic
(optional salary if needed)
2 firsts, maybe a couple of seconds and a younger, cheaper, backup center is a pretty good haul for a guy who wouldn't want to play there.
Of course it is contingent on him wanting to play in Minnesota as well.

We're going to have to offer more, a lot more.

I doubt it, they could get nothing, if he plays for the qualifying offer for one year and then leaves. Pretty sure it would be one of the best deals out there, but then again like I said he would want to have to play here to the extent it forces Memphis' hand. I sure wouldn't overpay to get him.

Re: M.Gasol to MN?
That logic worked really well for players like Deron and Carmelo. They're better than Gasol, but he's still an all-star tier center.
The fact that plenty of teams would be bidding for a high level center will drive the price up.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

If it was good enough for Pau ...!
