Which new GM a Team idea should we try?

Keep it the way it is.

Take top 30 players, and replace them with top 30 players from a past year, including keeping same salaries (Keeslinator's idea)

Start it normally, then draft in past players based on mid-game rankings without changing any current players (Warriorfan's idea)

Incorporate HOF teams into the league like the Bad Boy Pistons and Showtime Lakers (Warriorfan's idea)

Take a team that someone else used in a past GMAT game, and use that as the teams (Babyjax idea)

Take a 3 year period, and use the players from that. Keeps current players if overlaps occur. Trade, draft legends into the league. Trade more, then use remaining legends and 2012 draftees as the 2012 draft. (Blazer50's idea)

Take an old year, and use that. So like start at 2008 and go to 2009 instead of '11 to '12 (Lukekarts idea)

using past teams.

If you're looking for previous years salaries for teams, they're located at the bottom of team pages on basketball-reference. (I.E. 96 Chicago Bulls; http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CHI/1996.html). Then scroll all the way down, and player salaries are listed -- the problem with mid and pre 90's are that the salaries are really minuscule compared to the salaries today (though I dunno if that's a bad thing per se).

I'm really starting to like Lukes idea of choosing a past season and playing it out. It has gotten a few votes early, so we'll see what happens. I think it would be fun to do the 02/03 season then the 2003 draft and FA, then be done.

03 was such a great year, you had a lot of solid teams (Spurs, Mavs, Blazers, Twolves, Kings, Lakers in the west, Pistons, 6ers, Nets, Pacers, Hornets, Bucks in the east) and the 03 draft is a great one.

since the old starting year has momentum the draft will be something tweeked since we know that the 48 guy picked becomes a hall of famer

Yeah we'd run the season before the draft, and then the draft itself, live, rather than based on past events.

E.g. in 03, with the second pick of the draft, the Pistons select... Dwayne Wade.

It's make the picks that season really valuable.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

It looks like it's down to doing a past year, or taking old GMAT teams and using them. I'd love to get a few more votes just to get more results and opinions!

What about adding a wrinkle to the game involving hiring a coaching staff?

Yeah I think if we don't make any big changes, that could be a fun addition.

I also think that if we don't make a big change we should include contract extensions for big name players to make it more realistic. IE if you get CP3 in a trade, you can chose to work out an extension (if you have a decent team he should accept) but to make it fair, once he signs the extension, then he can't be traded. So you can have him sign the extension, and keep him, or have him test the FA market

To give more weight to doing a past year here is the free agent class after 2003 season pretty deep in big names.

Thanks Warriorfan. That is a very deep FA class, should be fun if we decide to go that way

For the people that put "Take an old year, and use that. So like start at 2008 and go to 2009 instead of '11 to '12 (Lukekarts idea)", which year were you guys thinking? I personally like 02/03, and it looks like Warriorfan is pumped for that too, but what about everyone else?

2002/03 sounds awesome. The draft would be awesome as well as players like Duncan being FAs

Idk, the "Take an old year, and use that. So like start at 2008 and go to 2009 instead of '11 to '12 (Lukekarts idea)" has the most votes with 6, so I think that's the most popular. I think that we just need to decide the year at this point, but it seems to be the consensus that 02/03 is the best way to go, with the 03 draft and FA being very good.

Well yeah, but this will replace GM A Team, so we will just set this game up as the GM a Team, so we will have the signups for it when we would normally start the new one

Yeah I like the idea of this replacing the current GM-A-Team whilst we wait for the lockout...

Some really interesting teams in 02/03.

Spurs - Parker / Ginobili / SJax / Bowen / Duncan / old Robinson
Mavs - Nash / Finley / Dirk
Lakers - Fisher / Kobe / Shaq
Suns - Marbury / Johnson / Marion / Amar'e
Kings - Bibby / Peja / Webber
Blazers - Wells / Pippen / ZBo / Sheed
Wolves - Szczerbiak / Garnett
Jazz - Stockton / Harpring / AK47 / Malone

Nets - Kidd / Jefferson / KMart
Pistons - Billups / Rip / Okur / BWallace
76ers - Iverson / Snow / Van Horn
Celtics - Paul Pierce / Antoine Walker
Pacers - Miller / Artest / Harrington / O'Neal / Miller
Magic - TMac
Bucks - Cassell / Redd
Hornets - BDiddy / Wesley / Mashburn / PJ Brown

We all know the sucky teams: Cleveland (Boozer/Z); Toronto (VC), LAC (Brand/Miller/Odom), Miami (Butler/Jones/Grant), Denver (Juwan/Posey/Nene).

Plus a load of teams stuck in mediocrity - Washington (MJ/Stackhouse/Hughes), Houston (Francis/Mobley/Yao); Memphis (Williams/Battier/Gasol); Atlanta (Terry/Robinson/Shareef), Chicago (Rose/Marshall/Chandler/Curry); Seattle (Shard / Barry); Golden State (Arenas/JRich/Jamison/Dampier) etc.

Should be a fun season. Lot's of talent stuck on bad teams that would look much better on a contender e.g. KG/TMac/VC etc.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

The last game is winding down. We should put up a sign up list and recruit some vets of the past games to rejoin. I would definitely help run this game and have some time. Maybe a three headed panel who can all confirm trades and help with dif parts of Free Agency and I would volunteer to do the draft.
