Paul Westphal - 1st teamer

Paul was basically considered the best shooting guard of the late 70s. He was consistently really good for a solid 5 year peak from 1975 - 1980. During that span he made 5 all-star teams and was named 1st team All-NBA 3 times and 2nd team All-NBA once. He also won a champsionship as a reserve for the Celtics in 1974 and in 1976 came within a crazy Hondo last second heave in overtime of leading the Suns to a championship over the Celtics. That game is considered by many to be the greatest game in the history of the NBA.

I was debating Bowen or Robertson as my other perimeter stopper next to Pippen, but I figured Bowen is a bit too one dimensional for my taste. I really like what he can do though and if he was available in the last couple of rounds, I'd have taken him just for the luxury

Fats is getting smashed at work, so he asked that I let you all know that for his next pick, he's taking:

Terrence Williams in the "He is awesome at everything" cat.

But then I reminded him that T.Will is still active so he couldn't be selected. Fats cried and cried. Once he calmed down, he said: "ok, ok. If that's the case, I'll take":

spencer haywood = mecca

i love it that sam cassell got drafted. he was definitely one of my all-time favorite players and i guy who i always felt was severely underrated because he didnt really have monster stats.

and now for the good stuff.

haywood as a 21 year old rookie stormed into the ABA (because the NBA wouldnt allow him to play) and led the league in scoring and earned the league's MVP title......... as a rookie over guys like rick barry and mel daniels. that season he averaged a whooping 31ppg and 19rpg. that next year haywood entered the NBA as a "hardship" case and because the first underclassman to ever play in the NBA.

once in the NBA haywood continued his amazing play being named to the 1st or 2nd team all NBA for the next 4 years.

He earned a championship ring with the Lakers in the 1979–80 season.

During the finals, Haywood was suspended by coach Paul Westhead. Haywood was so furious, he says he "left the Forum and drove off in my Rolls that night thinking one thought — that Westhead must die." Haywood hired a Detroit mobster to kill Westhead, but later reconsidered.[5]

he was also married to supermodel Iman in the late 70s.

simmons crushes spencer in his book calling him the "broken mirror", blaming him for the influx of high school, ruining the league etc... seems a bit harsh to me. before he got coked out (like half the league in the late 70s) haywood was the leagues best power forward. i can stick on my bench. if he behaves ive got myself a top 20 big man, if not, he can sit in a suit. it was worth a gamble at this point.

oh... and speaking of that triple OT game from 1976, its on NBAtv right now. game features cowens, jo jo white, havlicek, silas, westphal.

last night they showed the 1963 finals between the lakers and celtics. that game featured russell, cousey, baylor and west and havlicek as a rookie i think. there was absolutely no defense being played, at that was the finals. mostly guys running up the court making one pass and then a guy would pull up for a mid-range jumper. i can totally see how the league average in points was 118 points per game (at bad percentages). and no wonder guys like wilt could average ridiculous rebound numbers with that many shots going up and most of them jumpers. the few post ups were barely contested. i'd venture to say that the 2012 charlotte bobcats could beat the 1963 celtics by 50 points. i thought jerry west was the most impressive of the bunch. i'll give them this though, most of the guys could stick the mid range jumpers.

comparing this 1976 game vs that 1963 game its very obvious the difference in the quality of basketball with the 1976 looking much much closer to what we saw in the mid 80s.
