Ha, yeah. But the Tribune article says he spent most of his time with Oden and Aldridge, i.e. the least and most healthy players respectively.

But with him and maybe Sikma you would have some real good big man development going on. Love might get better, Randolph surely will, Pekovic too maybe? Maybe even Darko?

That's good to hear. I'd really like to see someone develop our talent better then what it has been. It always seems we have talented players but just don't get the right coaching here.

In the end, Bill Bayno’s departure from the Trail Blazers’ coaching staff came down to one thing: Security.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and new coach Rick Adelman offered the former Blazers assistant coach a four-year contract — three more years than the Blazers would offer — and a difficult decision became a no-brainer for Bayno.

“We talk all the time about this being a business when players get traded or coaches get fired and its no different in this situation,” Bayno said in an e-mail to The Oregonian. “My first choice was to stay and I did everything in my power to do that. But in the end, I had to take this offer. It was too good to pass up.”

As a general policy under the current management, the Blazers do not offer assistant coaches more than one-year contracts on a year-to-year basis. Coach Nate McMillan lobbied on Bayno’s behalf when the Timberwolves’ interest surfaced, but the Blazers were unwilling to budge on a multi-year offer.

Bayno just completed his sixth year with the organization, including the fourth as an assistant coach. When McMillan shook up his staff prior to last season, Bayno became one of his most trusted assistants and sat next to him on the Blazers’ bench during games. Bayno was most regarded for his abilities as a player development coach and it was common to see him dripping with sweat during pregame workouts and after Blazers practices, when he worked one-on-one with players.

His energy and tireless work ethic was infectious and, according to McMillan, will be missed.

“I thought he was a very good coach for us and I hate to lose him,” McMillan said. “Billy brought an energy and kind of a spirit to the team and the bench. He did a real nice job.”

Bayno, who explained his exodus from Portland in an e-mail because he’s on vacation in the Dominican Republic, called his departure “bittersweet ... because of my love for all things Blazers.” He specifically expressed sadness about leaving coach Nate McMillan.

“It was extremely hard leaving Nate and I really struggled with it,” Bayno said. “I’ve learned so much from him and owe him a great deal of credit for giving me my first chance to coach in the NBA. I truly believe he’s one of the best coaches at any level in the world.”

That said, Bayno also expressed excitement about his new job and the opportunity to work alongside Rick Adelman.

“I also have tremendous respect for Rick,” Bayno said. “In a lot of ways, he reminds me a lot of Nate. They’re both locks for the Hall of Fame in my humble opinion and I’m excited to learn from him and work for him.”

I'm guessing Adelman has a pretty thorough knowledge of NBA assistant coaches, and can cherry pick them pretty effectively. Very nice ability for a coach to have.

LOL! That thought crossed my mind as well!

I liked the idea of Ronzone, but when he left, I was ambivalent. Maybe we're just so desperate for things to be optimistic about, we laud any move.

Ronzone still sounds kinkier than Bayno.

But the idea of getting a Bayno gives me a huge Ronzone.

I like getting a little enthusiasm and passion with the team. To me it looked like Lambeer and Theus were absolutely miserable here last season. Wohl and Rambis always looks the same, so I couldn't really tell how miserable they were. JB and Martin seemed to have decent attitudes as the losing happened, but they were towards the bottom of our coaching hierarchy.

Bayno is the guy that did a lot of work with LMA and got him to start playing inside.

Love doesn't shy away from physicality though. Randolph is the guy that Bayno could most help.

I think Bayno could really help with a lot of the guys on this roster. Hopefully he can get Beasley to take it to the rim more and help his efficiency doing that. He could also really help Darko, if he is up for it mentally, with his finishing at the rim. Not to mention Randolph, Rubio, and now that i think about it Wes could be another he could really really help.
