MIN / PHX

Post#1 » by shrink » Sun Sep 25, 2011 1:51 pm

MIN GETS: Gortat + Childress

PHX GETS: Webster + UTA 1st + Pek/Darko/Miller + $2.8 mil TPE + $3 mil cash (exp)

Why so cheap, you ask? Childress for Webster is huge value for the cheap Sarver. Childress averaged 5.0 PPG last year and 16 minutes, and he's locked in for $27 million over the next four years! Or another way to look at it is the package. Is Gortat + Childress worth?:

2011-12 $12.8 mil
2012-13 $13.75 mil
2013-14 $14.9 mil
2014-15 $7.3 mil (for Childress alone?)
$48.75 mil

This deal saves Sarver about $40 million dollars (with Miller, and not counting salary of pick).

Phoenix wouldn't do it. Gortat is too much to sacrifice just to get out of Childress' salary.

Probably true, even with Sarver's cheapness.

I think, at best, Gortat is worth $9 mil/yr. He's an upgrade for sure, but it's questionable if he's even a top ten center in the NBA. I'd pay for the size and the chance for improvement. Still - $27 mil and $20 mil in savings and a pick .. that's got to have some appeal.

I would take this (Although I'm not sure PHX would). We actually get to spend some money on a decent player, instead of it wasting away somewhere in Glen Taylor's mansion.

It has some appeal, but nowhere near enough. It would be like saying we should have traded the #2 pick just to dump Pek and Darko. There's a pro there but it doesn't justify the cons.

No, it's nothing like that. I think a lot of us would like to get rid of the contracts for Darko and Pek, but Childress has one of the worst contracts in the NBA given his production.

I don't see either owner making this deal. You could make an argument that papa Glen is cheaper than Sarver. After all, Sarver has probably spent $100M more in payroll than the Wolves over the last ten years. Sarver has shown he'll always spend to a certain threshold and so i don't think he'll just be looking to dump players to save money, only to respend the money on different players.

I'd do it but I see the Suns fans laughing this one off. Suns management may have a different perspective but I still think Gortat is worth more to them than just shedding Childress.

Combine Darko and Pek and you're probably looking at the same thing

I believe the reports that Phoenix offered Gortat for Williams. We still wouldn't know the exact proposal because it's based off of rumors, but that looks like the gist of it. That value doesn't seem too far off and I am 99.9% certain one team pursued it. Both sides had something to gain because Phoenix is stuck in mediocrity land and needed to start rebuilding while the Wolves were last year's stepping stone and need a real center.

The reason I bring this up is because I was thinking of that scenario when I considered this trade. I know I'm basing this off a rumor that may or may not be true (and if it is, I don't know the specifics), but I feel that a trade with Williams is much more realistic than a cash saving trade involving Childress. The value just doesn't seem close.

Edit: Couldn't a lot of teams do that exact same trade when given the opportunity?
