Re: Sign Brandon Roy after he's Amnestied
Assuming Portland does amnesty him, why would he want to come here? Unless we're promising him a large role I'd imagine he would just go to another team looking to take a chance on him.

The same reason any free agent goes anywhere, we offer him the most money.

1. Fills the 2-guard spot if he can play heavy minutes
2. Injury risks reduce his value to the team considerably
3. Young but has the knees of an 85 year old
4. Doesn't cost big trade assets but would cost salary that would probably be better used on someone else

Re: Sign Brandon Roy after he's Amnestied
I realize he's a short term fix, because I don't think he's got three years of good play left in the knees, but unless someone thinks he's the old brandon roy, he's the type of player we can afford, and who fills many of the niches we need. We probably offer him more opportunity than most teams.
I guess as Choice 2 I'd say Rip Hamilton, but I worry that we'd have to give him three years. I'd rather give three to Roy.

I don't really want either of those guys.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

I think he'll be retired in two years. The guy can't play basketball much longer. When he runs his bones grind together.

He's a beast but you can't honestly believe that he'll do that consistently. His knees get worse after every game he plays. Pretty soon when the bones keep getting shaved down by the two bones rubbing together, it's going to make it even more difficult for him to stand up, bend his knees, and walk. He's definitely going to have to retire within 3 years.

I don't think money will be the biggest thing on his mind. He's made roughly 80 million in his last contract, so I don't think money will be the biggest factor unless someone blatantly overpays. I see him going to a contender.

i always used to read, on this board, 'oh no we cant take that guy, he's injury prone' now i read 'these guys get injured alot so they should be cheap, lets gettem!'

Lebron? I see Roy picking contender over dollar signs.

I've seen, read, and heard about that too but i find it hard to believe, bone on bone action? No way, that'd hurt so bad, why risk losing your legs for life for a couple years of basketball, and doesn't Kobe have the same thing goin on? He'll be around awhile.

It does hurt. There's no meniscus left in either of his knees. Zero.

Kobe has minimal meniscus in his right knee

Re: Sign Brandon Roy after he's Amnestied
I knew someone in their late 50s who had no meniscus. They got injections of a cartilage like substance that wore out over 5-6 months, and then they'd have to get injected again.
I have to think they have some treatment for what Roy has. With or without it, though, we get no draft pick so I'm all for winning this year. I'd give Roy a 4 year contract with a "if you can't play/retire" clause he only gets 1.5 mil the years he doesn't play. Maybe have a tiered salary based on the number of games he plays.

To be a 10-15 minute backup? Doubt Roy takes that.

If it only lasts 5-6 months for an (I assume) relatively inactive 50 year old, I wonder how long it would last for an active professional athlete who frequently jumps 30+ inches.

Re: Sign Brandon Roy after he's Amnestied
We don't really need him to play at a high level for 3 years or anything. I'd be absolutely happy if he can play for 1 and make us a playoff contender. One year could help establish a winning culture to the young pups, and get the Clipper monkey off our backs. I don't think money would lure him, but we can promise him a huge role on the team and a chance to stick it to the Blazers.

Re: Sign Brandon Roy after he's Amnestied
In that video I posted, all I see is he still has great lift and quickness. Maybe he won't play 82 games, but if we can have him healthy for a push to the playoffs and into the playoffs. I can't think of a more perfect compliment to our team. He's a great passer, great shooter, slasher, and is unselfish and humble. He'd be a great guy to play between Rubio and Beasley. He can relate to Kevin Love in that they are both very smart and have had a lot of success. I'm sold, I see no reason not to sign this guy...Couple months ago I made the mistake of underestimating his injury and saying we should trade Derrick Williams for him. If he's healthy, i'd do that 10/10.

Why would Roy get less minutes here than anywhere else?

He's in like the 2nd year of that contract which is why he's an amnesty candidate. He hasn't made that money yet. Who knows what's on his mind, but opportunity to play may be as important to him (or more important) than playing for a contender.
