Ok, so I'm still looking for a 3rd string PG who can drain the long ball. I want a great glue guy with balls as big as grape fruits who wont back down from anyone or anything.

So, with my Olympian pick, I'm taking the original Hammer, the kid who punked Sir Charles Barkley:

SHANE HEAL!!

•Represented Australia at 4 Olympic Games – 1992, 1996, 2000 & 2004.
•Captained Australia at the 2004 Olympics Games.
•Represented Australia at 3 World Championships – 1987 (Junior), 1994 & 1998
More total points and assists than any other player in the world at the 1996, 2000 & 2004 Olympics.
•NBA – Minnesota Timberwolves 1996-97
•NBA – San Antonio Spurs 2003
•3 years in powerful Greek League – All Star in 2 years.
•Stint in Italian League
•15 seasons in NBL
•8 years NBL All Star
•Captain of Sydney Kings first ever Championship.
•Youngest player to ever score 1000 points in NBL.
•Once scored 61 points in NBL game.
Scored 8 – 3 point baskets against the USA Dream Team at the 1996 Olympics.
•Return to NBL in 2006 with South Dragons as Player/Coach.
•Signed with NBL Team, Gold Coast Blaze for 2008 Season.
•Appointed Assistant Coach of the Australian Team in 2009

No. It's just the glow from his halo, a halo that is out of shot in this pic.

He's 6-0, an international player and a shooter, who made 27% of his field goals...

That video Fats posted was a nice one though. At first I thought - what the ****, the T-Wolves blowing out the Sonics so hard that some aussie drains 5 threes during the 4th quarter. Looked up the boxscore - they lost.

I wouldn't say that he was a terrible player, more like he had a terrible NBA career. And I can't say that I know that much about him... It's just pretty hard for any 6-0 international player to have a good NBA career, in my opinion.

Those are nice achievements to have, but if he couldn't make it in the NBA game, how is he gonna do in our super league? Again, I honestly don't know much about this guy. I was hoping someone would say he just didn't want to play in the U.S. or something.

He was in his late 20's/early 30's when he tried the NBA. Same thing with Andrew Gaze. By that stage it was too late for them.

Either way, as a three point specilast 3rd string PG on my team he aint seeing much time in this league any ways!!

I just wanted to get him before Sachmo did - and seriously, how many great retired Olympic ballers are there any way? Had to fill the cat some how!

So he's basically the white Juan Carlos Navarro? Short, unathletic shooter who had a bad NBA career but is a cult hero in his respective home country?

I don't want to flame your pick Slam, I just hate Shane Heal.

Shane Heal was a chucker and more of a streaky shooter. He is also an ****.
In his 1 year at Minnesota he almost got into fist fight with Terry Porter on who gets to have a shower first.
The next season he left because he knew he would never be more than a 3rd string guard. He was 26 at the time and in his prime.

I am not alone in thinking we would have been better off playing Ricky Grace over him in the 2000 Olympics, but he got more play because of his name.

He is a self absorbed prick who always insisted on being the man and has given bugger all back to the game in Australia while other greats like Gaze and Vlahov have continued to be ambassadors.
He was the reason that Mark Price got sacked from his head coaching job in Melbourne as he undermined him from the get go, to the point that he convinced the owner that he would be a better playing Coach. Which he wasn't , he was too arrogant and just kept chucking while making racial slurs to the crowd.

**** Shane Heal. Ps. The 5 three pointers in a quarter was a record for the Timberwolves and still might be.

PPS if you wanted a great retired Olympian who should have gone after Oscar Schmidt!

sweet, an oscar schmidt mention

by most accounts, he was the best international player to never play in the NBA. if i remember correctly, he played preseason one year, but then quit the team and went back to brazil. i looked at added him a few rounds ago, but i guess i had a brain meltdown because i couldnt figure out how to add him. i guess i was thinking the olympian had to have played in the NBA, but it doesnt say that. shame on me, i wrote the freaking thing.

for those that dont know about oscar, he was a small forward for brazil in the 80s and early 90s who had a game similar to mullin. dude was the king of the mid range leaner.

played in 5 olympics
scored 49000 pts in career
averaged 28ppg over 5 olympics (39 games)
averaged 42ppg in 88 olympics

I thought it was implied that all picks had to have played in the NBA, even the ABA guys.

Apparently he refused to play NBA as he wanted to be able to play for Brazil.

Even later in his career he was still affective. I remember him scoring quite well against one of the US teams, I think it was the 96 olympics, and you knew he was doing well as they started grabbing his jersey.

Same for me.

It's way too late now to do anything about it, but I took it as all players having been on a professional roster at least at some point in their career
