Re: Retro Draft: Lamar's pick - Countryboi skipped (x2)

Post#721 » by BigSlam » Sat Oct 1, 2011 12:54 am

For my ABA cat I'm going to take one of my all time favorite players. The guys is an out and out baller and the best player of his generation. I'm amazed (actually, more disgusted I guess) that he wasn't drafted earlier (like in the first three rounds) he's just that good.

When you think of what a basketball player should be, Don Buse checks every box. You could almost say he is the blue print - like after God made him he knew he had reached perfection so he threw away the mold. There was nothing the guy couldn't do, there was no better team mate, no one who loved the game more. Don Buse will go down as an all time great and pioneer of the game.

Like MJ and Magic, Kobe and LeBron have often said they modeled their games on "Boo" Buse - although all four of them said they would be kidding themselves if they ever thought they could reach his lofty skill sets.

Mr Don "Boo" Buse, I tip my hat to you, and I welcome you on my team.

ABA Champion (1973)
NBA All-Star (1977)
ABA All-Star (1976)
All-ABA Second Team (1976)
4× NBA All-Defensive First Team (1977–1980)
2× ABA All-Defensive First Team (1975–1976)

Best season:
12.5 points per game
3.8 rebounds per game
8.2 assists per game
4.1 steals per game

I can make another pick if need be, who can adjudicate?

Slam or Fats?

I'm ok with it. We said in the rules to use BB Reference as the guide so if they have him listed, it's all good by me.

But they don't have it on his page that he was a champ like they do for other players.

Blackman is better than Stack anyway.

Not that I disagree on him being "perfection" or anything..... but I don't know if he's a top 30 player

I've actually never heard of him in my life. I just went stat hunting and found him and made up all the stuff about perfection, Magic, MJ, Kobe, LeBron etc.

Far out, he was going to be my last pick and secret defensive weapon. 4.1 steals per game is the highest amount ever in the NBA/ABA combined. He also led the ABA in steals and assists per game that year.

I knew I should have picked him before and just picked whatever champion player was left at the end.

Still top 10 in both of those, not bad for a 3rd string pick

On his own page. The one with his name on it. It says no championships.

Basketball reference awards championships if you played a playoff game for the team. For instance if you go to Ammo's page, he gets credit for the 2010 title, because he played 13 minutes, but not the 2009 title, even though he was on the team.

I think Dawkins counts... barely, but he does.

First off, if it makes any difference - Fats you have forgotten to write down Dale Ellis for the 3s and dunks category in the main post.

Second off, through the "Dropping Dimes" category I pick Nate McMillan. He may average the least points out of all drafted players, yet he was one of the best defenders in the league during his playing days. At this point it doesn't matter how good my 3rd shooting guard is anyway, however he's a great guy to have on your team.

I thought he was already drafted, however it seems like we all will have passed one of the greatest players of that era. I simply didn't want to draft any players (except Wilt, Russell and probably Baylor, if I had the chance) from the 50s, 60s, because of the all "they're really white and it's hard to come up with a way to compare them to today's stars" thing.

This was my thinking as well. Arizin was 6'4 but played a lot of small forward.
I find it hard to rate him compared to modern day players

dan roundfield - single digits

he is the ultimate utility player. a supreme defender who can cover both forward spots equally.

as described on bball-ref
Roundfield was a defensive stopper. He could block, steal, and play great help defense. He could cover any frontcourt player. He was Ben Wallace before Ben,plus he could hit the 18 footer and his free throws. He is my pick on the all under-appreciated team

i see roundfield as more of a small forward on my squad. he'll be in there to bring his intense defense off the bench as well as his ability to knock down jumpers and rebound.

- 3 time all-star
- 3 time 1st team defense, 2 time 2nd team defense
- all-nba 2nd team '80

best season: 19ppg, 11.8rpg, 1spg, 1.5bpg

I feel like he wouldn't play as much SF in today's NBA. Just because he did then doesn't mean he has to.

I may as well take all the all time greats who happened to have light skin or play before the 80s since no one else will. The people who wouldn't vote for a team with them on it already wouldn't vote for me since I have *gasp* George Mikan *gasp* in my starting lineup.

Sachmo wrote:Cool name, never heard of him

He was one of the best NBA centers in the 60s, averaged big double doubles and made the all-star team a couple of times. Then he jumped leagues to the ABA. He had to sit out the first year (same deal as with **** Barry) and he started off his ABA career at 30+. Won the title the first year with the Utah Stars.

6'9 and a terrific, underrated player. Wilt actually said that Zelmo gave him more trouble than anyone. Beaty was strong as hell, a good outside shooter and had a great attitude. Although his knees were worn down (and by "worn down" I mean can't get up in the morning, have to use painkillers every day... god I love how tough NBA players used to be) already during his ABA years (he never dunked, per example), he knew every trick in the book, played dirty and was a great center basically without jumping. He'd elbow you, he'd step on you and when you retaliated, you would get the call, since he knew how to do it when the refs weren't watching.
